Mark Kermode reviews Mad Max: Fury Road

Фильм және анимация

Mark Kermode reviews Mad Max: Fury Road. Haunted by his turbulent past, Mad Max believes the best way to survive is to wander alone. Nevertheless, he becomes swept up with a group fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by an elite Imperator, Furiosa. They are escaping a Citadel tyrannised by the Immortan Joe, from whom something irreplaceable has been taken. Enraged, the Warlord marshals all his gangs and pursues the rebels ruthlessly in the high-octane Road War that follows.
Please tell us what you think of the film -- or Mark’s review of the film below. We love to include your views on the show every Friday.

Regarding the casting of the models, I was under the assumption that that was their function? To be these beautiful out of place figures in the landscape? Why else would brick shithouse Immortan Joe try so desperately to keep them locked away from the world. They are the perfect breeding stock.

Let's not forget that the physical appearance of the Wives is a plot point that the movie was very obvious on. *spoiler* The Many Mothers deliberately comment on their physical 'perfection' when they meet up. *end spoiler* They were Joe's prized breeders so their appearance was done that way to fit the story, not because the filmmakers felt like they needed to stick to generic Hollywood beauty standards.

@DressedInRags some are more developed than others. Splendid puts herself between Max/Furiosa and the dangers. She knows Immortan Joe and how to manipulate him. Dag receives the seeds from one of the Many Mothers and might be responsible for the agriculture later. Capable converses Nux into a warrior who dies for the right cause and meaning. Toast and Fragile seem to stay the same, though I think their characterizations have something to do with allegiance and perserverance.

@@NickHunter - I did not think the camera was leering out of context. The initial appearance of the girls (washing themselves when Max came upon them) felt deliberate to convey the significance of the escape and the possible danger from the unknown Max. After that, I disagree that the camera lingered on the girls appeal. You could argue that the camera should have avoided any suggestion of their "flawlessness", but that would have been awkward.

Just came out of a screening now and fair to say I was completely blown away. Unlike Mark I thought the action scenes were broken up just enough to give the viewer a chance to get their breath back before diving right back in. The action sequences themselves were like nothing I'd ever seen. Beautifully choreographed and, (I hate to make this comparison) unlike a Michael Bay film, I had the unusual sense that I knew exactly what was going on at any one moment.

So in a patriarchy such as in Mad Max, Imortan Joe would pick homely women in respectable clothing? Of course not, he would pick the most objectifiable beauty there is, supermodel types. That's the point. And if you notice, the film *itself* never objectifies them, there are no lurid camera shots of them or any fan service scenes with them at all. I can at least sympathize with Kermode's view on the length of the action, but that The Wives are disingenuous with Furiosa's storyline I think he got pretty wrong.

Saw this last night. Absolutely loved it, it's so wonderfully insane. It's as good as Mad Max 2. I agree that it's probably too long but other than that I can't fault it. Charlize Theron, for me, is really the centre of the story with Max being something of a supporting player. Surprised Kermode didn't mention Nicholas Hoult giving an incredibly full on committed performance. There's something really great about having a movie that has the uncomprimized feel and characterization of a stripped down early 80's b-movie but has been given a big budget and is playing in multiplexes. I really liked that it had the strange sort of speeded up editing that the old Mad Max films had too. There won't be very many blockbusters like it. :)

Pete W Saw it few hours ago. The only problem was it was almost completly full throttle, all the time, and the initial parts of the film did not give much set-in time. It was just thrown in your face. This is the reason I prefer Mad Max 2 so much more. It gives you time, you set things up and you can think as well. It is not total action, all the time. All the "gunpowder' is reserved for the last part of the movie. And for others. No, this not not a sequel or set between first and the second. Clearly more like a reboot.

  • @WAAAAAAAAAAAY

BlackStar250874 That's a fair criticism, I can understand having that problem. Weirdly I didn't mind the relentlessness of it, usually I don't really like that - mostly because it didn't seem to want to give any help for people who don't know Mad Max or haven't seen the old ones [Miller didn't spend time re-introducing the character with back-story filler for example]. For that reason I found immensely enjoyable ha. I think I still prefer Mad Max 2 as well though - should watch it again soon, not seen it in ages. Before I saw it I was talking to somebody who had who described it as following on from Mad Max 2 and after watching it I couldn't figure out why he'd said that - it is, of course, a reboot. :)

Pete W one of the reasons why i said i thought this might be a remake of Mad Max 2 a few months ago was that i watched all of the trailers for this Fury road and i noticed that there was a large chase scene, i seen all 3 of the original mad max movies and of those 3 the only one that had a chase scene that was just as large in terms of number of vehicles was Mad max 2. Unfortunately i now have no idea where this fits into the continuity, but i keep hearing "reboot" going around quite often. since the very first mad mad was the one where there was a normal world still having "rule of law" and he had his family still and in this movie he remembers he family having died. we know that this can be rebooting Mad Max 1. we also know it cant be remaking Mad Max 2 or even the Mad Max 3. in my expert opinion this is either like the guys said in this radio show video that its a spin off or this truly is the 4th movie in the series having taken place after thunder dome. but at least saying that it was going to remake road warrior was a very educated guess. i just had no idea there were other stories in between the first 3 movies some where in there just waiting to be told. im kinda happy i was wrong and that this was not a remake or road warrior and that it was a new mad max story that fits some where in that original trilogy some place back when he still had the V8 interceptor of course.

Don't get me wrong, he is brilliant in Warrior, Batman, Bronson etc, but their are a couple of performances let him down due to his voice such as Locke, Mad Max and P Blinders. It's a if he is overacting. Mad Max is a brilliant film though even with Hardys role.

I think when u first see them playing in the water it looks like a generic eye candy shot but I think its very much intentional almost parody. I thought the decision to cast attractive women as wives, specifically Rosie Huntington-Whitely was concious and in keeping witht the feminist undertones of the flick. How more apt is the idea 'We are not things' when those being objectivied are actually objectivied and treated as objects in real life?

Reece Robertson I believed it to be a conscious choice as well, but not for the same reason - though you make a good point. I took it to be part of the world building. The opening narration hints at some kind of nuclear war or fallout or something which I believe is further emphasised by the fact that so many people in The Citadel are deformed and/or sick. Like Immortan Joe's two sons; the little person with the periscope and the one with the oxygen tank. I think that the reason that his wives are the most beautiful women in the entire film is because they are not deformed and they're not sick, which means they are healthy and have good genes that could potentially be passed onto any offspring he has with them (like the baby boy that was "perfect in every way"). His other two sons are obviously not from any of the five wives we see because they are FAR too old to have been their children. I suspect the tattooed old woman with the gun is a previous wife, discarded because she is too old to have children but still around as a "den mother" or chaperone or what have you to the younger wives. I think of him like Henry VIII; a king who is desperate for healthy offspring the way the aforementioned king was desperate for a male heir.

Reece Robertson The problem is, no end of Male characters die in the move, and it is seen as okay. Men die in violent ways much more frequently than women in real life. Men are seen as "things" and die in huge numbers at work. It's about 96% in Ireland and is about the same around the world. Men also commit suicide far more frequently than women. The fact remains that men are disposable, and nature has made women attractive to make them less disposable.

I saw this film at the local multiplex. You know that feeling you get when you come off the motorway at 70mph, then come down to 30 and it feels like walking pace? That's the feeling I had coming out of this movie - the real world was just slow motion, and driving home I had to resist the urge to just stomp on the accelerator.

  • @zanesland

George Miller understands what equality really should be. At no point in the movie did he feel he had to write in a single line having any of the female characters explain themselves, they weren't empowered, they just were. Sure we've had lots of films with strong female roles but there always seems to be a bit of a quip about it being surprising that they are capable AND female. Sure there were feminist aspects of the film but I don't think that is the point of the movie at all in the eyes of the director; he's making an action film, thats it. However, the talent, dedication and strong sense of morality is what makes this such an excellent feature. Every character is multidimensional and feels as though they don't have to EARN their screen time, because George is so talented at making the wasteland come to life. (For example, in the road warrior, lets be honest, the costume that Lord Humungous is wearing is ridiculous; he's essentially Jason Voorhees in a gimp suit. BUT through the portrayal that Miller inspires through his vision, by the second time he came on screen it didn't seem odd at all because I believed he existed within that world.)

Oh I agree, Locke was amazing. Of course Bane was more about body language and physical presence but I'm just saying it's very restricting to only have your eye are on your face to emote with. Being sat in a car is very restricting and he gave an amazing performance in that.

I don't know why, but I never felt that Max was a supporting character. It's like saying that Batman is not a hero because he only appears when needed. In fact Max has always been like this, if he would had the chance, he wouldn't help anyone, he would leave, he doesn't care about your walefare. What makes him the main character, is the main title, and the fact that without him everything would be lost. He is the only one that can save the day, and you know it. He even goes beyond a main character, *he represents an ideal*. The hero, the loner, the everyday Joe that can trascend, make a change.

Mark is so wrong about The Wives. They are Immortan Joe's sex slaves/breeders, that's why they look like they just went off the stage of a fashion show. In other words, they are not "objectified" by the movie, in a world of Immortan Joe, they are objects. However, given the opportunity, they rebel and take action, even though they don't have Furiosa's battle prowess. Splendid in particular is given two "crowning moments of awesome" and each of The Wives has personality of her own. PS And what about "Badass Grannies" Mark? They don't count?

I saw this last night and I agree the action sequences were superb. I loved the way the vehicles looked like mutations just like the humans. On balance I enjoyed it but there was room for more light and shade. You don't need 2 hours of unrelenting action when you have a whole series of set pieces you can use, just use the best of them and let the actors act. It is the characters that make you care about this story i.e Max re discovering his humanity and resisting becoming another predator. The original Mad Max had a lot more character actors making the post apocalyptic world more interesting from a human point of view.

A very good review. My only problem: The feminist criticism (the film being a mixed bag) has nothing to do with the movie. This is the problem brought to the movie by reviewers. Sure you can argue that the movie has such a built up (matriarchy of the desert women vs. patriarchy lead by Joe), but in the end, this is interpretation. I would never say that this is a feministic movie. In the end, all the movie is, is an action movie about a prison break of five girls kept as breeding material and this is only brought up, because some people can scream "finally a movie got it!!!11OMG!" when a movie fits their agenda. So the movie can't be criticised for something some people read into it.

I love the review and agree with nearly all of Mark's points. I disagree in his statement that this is not a ground breaking piece of genius, because for me this is one of the very best orchestrated action movies, and one that also feels very natural, not forced or scripted. Speaking of orchestry, the music and sound effects are absolutely phenomenal, and add to the already incredibly rich environment. This, in my opinion, is cinema at its best. However, with that said, I should also add that there's not really a "point" to the movie. It's an action fest, and a remarkably emotional one at that, but at the end of the day there are no lessons learned. This is not a bad thing; in many ways the original Indiana Jones was the same way, and yet its hailed as one of the best action/adventure movies of all time.

This is very attractive visually. Reminded me of the visual impact of 300. In saying that, its not in the same calibre as 300 by some way. Mad Max is decent. Its decent for what was a limp first few MM movies. It is exciting, and has some backstory to give credibility to some of the characters but a bit of a pantomime baddy about it. Naff. Interestingly, The WIld Boys was the book that inspired this - and the video for the Wild Boys (Duran Duran, 1984) was the original theme tune that was never used and you can see the similarity of the characters in that video to this latest flick. Overall, not bad chase movie with a heavy layer of visual sensuality.

Must say I'm not normally one for the modern action movie, probably because there are so many Michael Bay-style films out there that dilute the genre. However, I liked this film quite a lot. I think that whilst some may say Kermode is being slightly negative about this film, I think that for him this is quite a positive review and he does seem to embrace the idea that this was designed to be a vroooom, big, loud, all-action, proper film. I also think his points about where he felt the movie didn't quite work are pretty justified too. I like Kermode; he puts so much thought into his reviews, but always values instinct and gut feeling above anything else. :)
