Mario Kart DS Kiosk Demo - GCN Luigi Circuit [Oscilloscope Deconstruction]

Sounds way less compressed and sounds closer to MKDD.
I think the only channels being similar to the final version are 11 and 12. (and I think 15 is also the same but panned differently)

Gosh do I miss the times Mario Kart music had the iconic whistle tunes written into the songs. The new live instrument music is great as well, but many of the new ones don't feature that iconic whistle tune anymore

If I'm not mistaken, the whistle effect was just a Double Dash thing. It's part of that game's vibe and feel specifically. I guess you could have the opinion that all Mario Kart music should sound like Double Dash did. I wouldn't complain if that were the case. But I like how every entry has its own unique vibe and feel. I'm perfectly happy with the whistle staying in Double Dash, as it makes it stand out for that reason. Though, when Double Dash tracks get remastered, if the whistle was in it, it needs to stay in it. I'm so glad that when Yoshi Circuit was remastered for MK8, they kept the same exact whistle sample.

I mean if you consider mario kart 64, mk's music has had jazz fusion longer than it's had whistles

You identified more specific samples than I would have been able to, but I would add to that more specificity: Channel 2 is left ear and channel 3 is right ear. Channel 5 is mid, and channels 6 and 7 are left. Channel 14, while I won't dispute what you called it, I would have also added the qualifier "bass".

@@dogman15I mean, she makes her own music using these samples, it makes sense that she would do it better than we can in identifying them.

@@dogman15 I only know about the specific samples because I am retroactively making a massive soundfont containing every known source listed. And about channel 14: It is called 'Rocker,' but I can understand if some people are confused by the name.

Getting to play this GCN course on my DS blew my mind when I was a kid. For nostalgia reasons, this will always be my favorite Mario Kart game.

Much better than the final version, except for channel 14. Hot take, but I am not a fan of the picked bass sample. It is probably superior objectively, but I like how the final version sounds more, especially in this song. This is too quiet and doesn't have enough power. It should've had an additional bass channel TBH. Other than that, everything sounds much better. - Channel 2-4's high brass has been improved due to a lack of compression, though it's still more compressed than the GCN version. - Channel 5-7's low brass is also less compressed, though it's a bit less noticeable. - Channel 1 has a better sounding whistle, a little clearer - Channel 8 replaces the original's Hammond church organ with a Triton BX7 drawbar organ, which is about the same, but higher quality and in a higher octave. - Channel 9 replaces the wimpy guitar with a much better electric guitar which sounds like something from Bowser's castle - Channel 10 has different dead notes, though these are more less noticeable due to how quiet they are, but they are cleaned up a little. - Channel 13 uses a softer drum, which more accurately emulates the Double Dash sound font. - Channel 15's sticks, which I assume is essentially a "rim tick" on a snare, sounds a little clearer, which you can hear when it plays individually. - Channel 11 and 12 are the same There are still plenty of kiosk demo songs to do, but the one I would love to see next is it's version of SNES Donut Plains 1, as it sounds way different compared to the final version.

If you want accuracy, you can use *VG Music Studio* ( github.com/Kermalis/VGMusicStudio/releases/tag/v0.2.2 ), it's a software that plays .sdat files specifically, not .nds files. In order to get .sdat files, you'll need a software that extracts the DS roms' content. Personally, I use *NDSHeader* ( digiex.net/threads/nds-header-tool-2-view-info-on-nds-roms.14990/ ). After that, you'll see a bunch of folders. Usually the .sdat file is located in a folder called "sound", "snd", "audio", something like that. After you found it, you can play it by using VG Music Studio. You don't get any midi or soundfont files but it sounds way more accurate to the original and you can mute any channel you want.
