The isometric perspective in this romhack is impressive. Really appreciate the simple color palettes as it simplifies some of level design and made that Escher level possible. Really hope there's a romhack competition that's focuses on unusual/novel graphics in the future not often used in SM64 hacks

It’s inspired by a mobile game named Monument Valley. I played it a lot when I was younger and seeing an sm64 hack inspired by it really warmed my heart.

hip indeed That is exactly what I was going to say. Remember, one of the coolest hacks from these videos so far featured almost no crazy code, and was just an enjoyable rom hack with cool models, textures, and level design.

I feel like the next ROM hack should be "ROM Hack All-Stars", the winners from previous rom hacks have to make a sequel from their winning ROM.

This is probably one of the coolest Mario 64 rom hacks.. so it's really unfortunate that it was submitted for the Zelda hack competition when it isn't Zelda themed

@@SpunkMayo Jet Ericksen, the legend, always comments on SimpleFlips videos looking for GBJ's and keeping track of them, you don't really find his comments nowadays unless you take a GOOD look in the comment section

This ROM hack reminded me a bit about Monument Valley, a game I played when I was younger that also utilises forced perspective. The main difference is that Monument Valley treats the forced perspective as if it wasn't the case.

Indeed

It's called orthographic projection. With a normal video game camera if you traced lines from the camera to the object you'd end up with all of the lines meeting at a point behind the camera. But with orthographic projections each line out of the camera is parallel with all the other lines. This has the neat effect of making it so objects don't change size as they get further or closer to the camera, if something is 1m from the camera it will be the same size as if it's a billion metres away from the camera. It's most commonly used in RTS games, and in real world maps.

This has to be one of the most mind boggling SM 64 hacks I've ever seen. But it did feel kind of out of place in a Zelda competition.

If Simple disqualified hacks that didn't meet the theme, then people wouldn't keep submitting them every time. Really cool hack, but allowing it in a Zelda competition must be frustrating to the creators that actually followed the theme.

This isn't the only one that didn't stick with the competition theme, there are multiple hacks submitted that weren't Zelda themed. Apparently this theme was the most specific so people wanted to submit a romhack but didnt want it to be zelda themed

With enough effort and courage, you can build anything with the mario 64 engine

God, I wish this was more Zelda-themed. It's so impressive, but giving it a 10 wouldn't feel fair, as it doesn't follow the theme of the competition enough in my eyes.

Everyone saying "Monument Valley" just goes to show that people really do be sleeping on the OG, EchoChrome for the Sony PSP smh my head.

In case anyone didn't get the reference, the hack Monroe Park appears to be based on the mobile game Monument Valley. If you haven't played it, you definitely should. It's really cool.

If anyone is interested, there's this sick ass game called Monument Valley, and it's basically the same concept as that first hack, except it goes even crazier. Hands down the best mobile game I've ever played.

My guy really just remade Monument Valley in SM64.

Here I go thinking last romhack was the coolest one I've ever seen. While the last one was a way better zelda hack this one is just impressive to watch

Watching you arrive at the main hub gave me major flashbacks of playing Lego Backlot back in 2002

I'm sure people gave already mentioned it but the first hack is a big reference to game called 'monument valley' which is filled with those sick perspective puzzles. It is nothing short of incredible that someone was able recreate its game play in mario 64 of all things but unfortunately yeah, as cool as it is, it's not zelda... so...

Sorry we called The Police on you and they put on the red light. Anyway, the first hack gave me some vibes like... I guess Petscop, OFF and Mario's Regular Pasta vibes all blended together. The second was just some neat level design and aesthetics, and the third was decently charming dialogue and a great finale/ending picture. Anyway it is 12:11 AM for me so I should go to bed. Thank you, editors, Simple, and the 4th file selection that was Tub.

You really never know what to expect out of these roll hacks

Don't get me wrong, the hack is amazing but I'm not seeing the Zelda resemblance at all

A fixed camera & a castle door that requires multiple key cards. Is this Resident Evil? Imagine speedrunning this. You'd have to skip most of the cameras to save time.

This is like a much more basic and incomplete version of Echochrome. It's a crazy awesome concept and I'm surprised it took so long for someone else to use the perspective concept in another game, so I'm not hating on it at all! I really look forward to how they might polish their game, and maybe replace Mario with their own character so that they can actually make some money off this.

This existential nightmare is what Mario experiences every time he dies and he is brought back by a green mushroom.
