Lol literally, I beat that whole game not knowing about those power-ups. Definitely one of the most nostalgic experiences of my childhood. You can’t beat playing some ds games and struggling for so long trying to unlock those secrets…memories 😌 I did eventually find out how to unlock them lol

This was the first version of Mario 64 I played . . . i feel like a lot of people hate it though, idk why Edit: the controls for the DS Version felt more normal to me than the 64 version, so it's probably just what you played first that influences what controls you like more.

Don't forget that Luigi can use the Vanish Cap and once you get Wario, he can use the Metal Cap. Mario can use the Wing Cap and Yoshi can breathe fire.

Better during the development of the game, the button for running could have an option as a toggle.

I was hoping to see Dave's reaction to all the touch screen minigames. However, they might not be new to Dave if he's already played some of them in New Super Mario Bros.

Same, it's perfect imo. Everyone complaining about the controls is annoying, yeah it wasn't made for D pad but over time you start to feel comfortable with it with the control stick, then it's fine. But I never had to get used to it because it was my introduction to Mario 64 overall. Great port either way, love all the extra content and awesome ideas. Forever my favorite version of Super Mario 64.

All characters can ground pound and long jump, Yoshi can ground pound but can't break any bricks, Mario, Wario, and Luigi can break bricks when ground pounding. There's some useful information there Dave_DGR!

This game, Pokemon Platinum, Mario Party DS, Pokemon Soul Silver, Solatorobo, Pokemon Black, DBZ Supersonic Warriors 2, Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympics, and Kingdom Hearts ReCoded, All these games helped make the DS so nostalgic in my eyes.

Lakitu never got hurt because he's the cameraman

This game is my childhood. One of my favorite games of all time, and watching Chuggaaconroy (spell check needed) play it is very nostalgic as well. Love the inclusion of some beta stuff from the original! Side note, I don’t know why people complain about a run button here when 3D Land and 3D World use one as well

This game came out years before I was born, yet still somehow managed to be a massive part of my life

Yeah, main "argument" against the game that i've seen is "The D-Pad is so uncomfortable" although if that was done, it'd probably be as simple as "WELL, MARIO HAS LESS POLY"

I ordered a Super Mario 64 DS cartridge two months ago and it arrived on the day he uploaded this! Now I can replay my childhood!

64 DS is a really good and worthy remake IMO

7:09 it’s so painful seeing how long it takes you to even try experimenting pushing the R button to jump

I love this game so much!! Not only is it one of the few 3D Mario games with Yoshi, my favorite character, and you actually get to play as him in 3D, but the added content that wasnt in the original and all the really fun levels and challenges are amazing!! One of my best memories was really enjoying the level to beat Big Boo to get Luigi, with how interesting it was to have to listen for the Boo's laughter. I even had a dream of exploring that area myself once. I fought Big Boo again with Luigi and got a pretty funny response too! Luigi is actually also one of my favorite characters and my other favorite to play as, with how high he can jump and how he floats down! All of that in a nice game for the DS! I still need to beat it though...

Love this! Just 100% beat SM64DS a few months ago, felt like a mega achievement for my childhood self :) I haven't played any other console version myself but I can agree the controls are still a little difficult! I found the control stick on my 3ds (which I used) actually helped a little. Excited to see if u keep playing and to see you discover more secrets!!

I loved so much how you were reacting to the new things added in SM64DS, it kinda reminds me of me as a child discovering new thigns

i just rediscovered this gem. i used to play it as a very small child at the Eagle's Nest in giant eagle. for those who don't know what those are, Giant Eagle is a supermarket in the US and the Eagle's Nest was a daycare center they had for parents who wanted their kids to play and have fun while they did their shopping. the Eagle's Nest no longer exists. but, back when it was a thing, my dad used to put me in there and they had the N64 and only 3 games, but the games they had were really good. they had the super mario 64, a Spyro game, and some Tom and Jerry game. at the time, because i was too little to really understand how the game worked, i never made it past the first painting in mario and thought it was too hard. i decided to play this game again just yesterday and already have 25 stars and 24 lives. having such a blast from the past

Anything Mario 64 related, even the DS version, is always perfectly nostalgic and fun to watch ahh

There're pros and cons to both versions, though I think the DS version wins out in almost all categories. And I grew up on the N64 version! I'll agree that the controls get a little wonky on DS, but it's mostly just stopping or changing direction when at a slower speed. The amount of times the character moves in a circle instead of just snapping to the new direction costing me a life is too damn high. Otherwise all the improvements are very welcome

I want to see more of DGR64 DS. that game was my discovery version of SM64. 150 stars instead of 120. 4 playable characters instead of just Mario. Yoshi can use the other characters' cap to transform into them. Each character have a unique power up (mario float + wing cap, Wario metal, Luigi invisible, Yoshi breathe fire.)

My first ASMR experience is that music in Dire Dire Docks 😌 loved it, still do

Funny story: back in the day, I got this game. I didn't realize it was a remake of a different game. So I was playing it and was just like "this is a fun game." I had no clue. Years later, once I finally picked up on the fact that it was actually a remake, I was kind of intrigued. But after finding out all the differences, I realized that I kind of like this version of the game better, sadly. What is new content for the people who played the original just feels like missing content whenever I get a chance to play the original. It's weird to think that the original SM64 feels like a worse version of this game to people like me who played this version first, while, to fans of the original, this version might seem like a worse (at least in some ways) version of the original game. Anyway, that aside, I'm glad to see you enjoy a game so close to my heart!

It's funny to see you having problems with the controls. It also saddens me to see this as a ds lover, this was my first experience with mario 64. And after playing 64 on the switch, I'd say that the ds was my favorite way to play it.

Super Mario 64 DS to me is my favourite of the bunch because it innovated the landscape for the iPhone, because of the minigames, and ever since 2007, it along with New Super Mario Bros, were two wonderful casino toys for me, my brother and cousins when we were kids.

This was the very first mario game I've ever played and I still say that SM64 DS still holds up, it's so much fun

I'd love to see more of this sometime! It's my own childhood you're playing here!

Nintendo put way more effort into this than 3D Allstars

I think this game and the original are equal masterpieces. The DS trades the better controls with more content and the reverse applies to the original. I personally will always love the DS version more bc that's how I was introduced to the game as a child, but I also understand the massive impact and legacy the original has. Oh and if you are wondering about those keys, they unlock different minigames. You get the keys by catching the bunnies of the color of the character. Yoshi's is Yellow, Mario's is Red, Luigi's is Green, and Wario's is Orange. Each key from a colored bunny unlocks a minigame under the character's section. Luigi's is more casino based, like Poker and Russian Roulette, Wario's is more bob-ombs style, Mario is mainly just minigames involving Mario, and I forget what Yoshi's is. I know there is a pick the flower one where it's she loves me, she loves me not, etc.

I've always liked this version better than the original.

I wish we could have gotten the features of this game as an option in 3d all-stars so it could be played with normal controls but that would have required a small amount of effort on Nintendos part.

super mario 64DS's most beloved addition wasnt any of the main game content new or old. people love the mini games in this remake, they're the thing that made it memorable.

I played the DS version first and then went back to the 64 original years later, so all those things he said about the remake's controls feeling wrong are exactly what I said when playing the N64 version!

‘The game was designed for the D pad not the control stick’, actually not strictly true as the original DS model came with the thumb strap which was basically a bit of plastic you attach to your thumb to rub on the touch screen - so you were actually meant to use this with the touch screen to control your character. Personally I preferred this method to the D pad option as it gave you more precision on your characters control, however it was still fiddly and you would often hit the edge of the touchscreen with your thumb, leaving you to consistently recenter.

The painting in JRB is different because SM64 DS is based on the japanese version. That means the JRB painting is not a ship, the stone pillar star is out in the open, etc...

1 rule is different, you play as YOSHI’s first. You are required to unlock Mario.

@DGR: I went and watch the full version of this stream on Twitch, before it disappear from twitch. With Super Mario 64 DS if you don't do 100% you will miss a lot of the new stuff, Including Bob-omb battle field. Also you assume that tick tok clock his harder, ignoring the fact that they might have change it to make it easier. In the non-secret course, hats of the other character will appear in early stars, even if you have not unlocked the character yet, and even if you do unlocked the character and then do that stars as the correct character the hat will still be there, the hats that only appear once the character his unlocked, it will only appear if your not that character. Yoshi cannot break red bricks, neither black brick, Neither bolders but Yoshi can break Red bricks with bob-ombs, also Yoshi can both destroy red bricks and black bricks under the effect of the mega mushroom and Bolders also, it will look like a super mushroom. Mario and Luigi can break red brick but cannot break black brick, neither Bolders except with the Mega mushroom. Wario can break bolders and Black brick without the mega mushroom, also if you waited to unlocked Wario for the behind the chain chomp gate, he only need to ground pound the pole once to Free the chain chomp but the problem his, Wario his bad at jumping, so if you have waited for the 4th stars, in Bob-omb battle field for red brick to appear near the chain chomp gate, get yoshi to blow-up one of does brick with bomb to get a mega mushroom, then you just have to ground pound the post once to free the chain chomp.

If you ever plan on doing a whole run theres some things to know. R is crouch. Crouch for crawls long jump and ground pound. L is camera angle. Im pretty sure it was b for punch and hold y to run. Yoshi can make eggs by crouching when something is in his mouth enemy wise there are various warp spots through different levels, luigis power flower lets him go through walls where you will find wario. If you need more info just respond to this

I played this full game on an actual DS. I didn't use the Virtual Console. That very same DS still works and I still keep on playing it, because I love it!

@DGR: I'm suprise he did not found the mega mushroom yet in this game, in the earlier world it only appear if you select a certain star and it will be there for every stars later than that, If you break a red brick, if the red brick gives you a 1-up mushroom it would be the mega mushroom instead when you pick the correct star number.

Same! This was my very first video game as well! I first started playing this game back in 2007 when I was 5 years old! I loved playing this game so much that by the time I became 13 years old, I decided to 100% complete this game with all 150 stars collected. I got to unlock the cannon, and I got to experience the joy of flying around the outside castle yard up and away! I'm so happy that I grew up with this game, and I will always cherish this game in my heart and soul forever and ever! :D
