Veteran reunited with stolen service dog after 9 months and 1,400 miles
Back in November, Marine veteran Alexandra Melnick’s service dog, Kai, was stolen from her home near San Diego, but after more than nine months and traveling 1,400 miles, Melnick was reunited with her four-legged friend in the small town of Aubrey, Texas.
“He was never used for the military, but he does help with PTSD-related aspects for me as a service dog,” Melnick said when Kai was taken.
Melnick had fliers made and scoured the areas near her home searching for her companion, all to no avail, but on August 31 Melnick was given a tip that Kai was in Aubrey, Texas. Denton County Constable D. Boydston and local Animal Control helped to confirm the 1-year-old German Shepherd, who was implanted with a microchip, was in fact Kai and in the Texas town.
Melnick and Kai were reunited after 9 long months, and while the investigation into his disappearance is ongoing, authorities said they have identified a suspect.

Thank God whomever did this need to be in jail for years not only did they hurt this soldier the hurt is dog by stealing him. There are some people that truly don't deserve to be on this planet

The other side knew that they had no case to keep Kai. There isn't a registry for a service animal and even if there was such a thing, ESAs aren't covered under the ADA or the DOJ. The fact that the other side didn't show up for court says a lot about them.

A doggie reunited with his momma! I laughed @ her kiss to him ! I have a duplicate of Kai, she's about 10 yrs I guess. Adoptee from city pound. Debbie Dog. And we love that hound more each day. Best dogs in the world.......

Kai, knows that lady with the long hair is responsible for finding him, and bringing him back were he belongs.. You can hear him whimpering his thanks, while she is petting him!
Gosh, so glad Kai got home. I’m sure that was difficult, as a distinct breed that looks similar to so many others.

Dogs have long memories. Kai KNEW who his master was.
The dog wants to go home and hit the sack. He looks tired and maybe he is getting camera shy. Glad you were able to get him back safely

WHAT kind of scumbag does that??🤬😠🤦 Stealing any dog is disgusting, but someone's specially trained service dog? Humans can stoop so very low. Kai is GORGEOUS and l am so thankful he's back with his mum. I pray Griffin the black Great Dane was found safe.🙏🏻🤞🏻🍀🤞🏻🙏🏻. There has to be proper kidnapping laws made for Animal theft, of any species. 🐾🌈☮️🇨🇦

Watched your first solo, great stuff. I never did the solo as I failed the medical but I still love flying although its got to be ten years since I've been up. I couldn't think of anything worse than having my dog (Bette the kelpie) stolen. I am so happy that you got him back, and as if he would forget you. What people forget is a dog becomes part of your life BUT you become their entire life.............

So glad that you got Kai back. This really made my day. I don't know what I would do without my shepherd. They make a GPS collar that wil send a message to your cell phone if the dog leaves a defined area. see Tagg.com for more info. It will give a GPS trail that gets sent to your iphone. Larry MPLS,MN

There is a great deal untold with this story.The ex husband had the dog and there is nothing wrong emotionally with this woman other than missing her dog which is understandable. It is a divorce gone bad,everyone involved knew the ex husband had the dog. Hopefully these two can put it behind them.

She didn’t know her ex husband had the dog. Pretty sure she wouldn’t have waited 9 months to “find” him. The ex’s family took the dog from her backyard and took him to Texas.

Lisaa the real owner said that these "owners" knew who he was. And even called him Kai. They registered him as a service dog too (I think). But they didn't want to give him up anyway...
In india many dogs are missing. Mostly to smuggle dogs to china or north east India for meat . It's really rediculous..
Another reason to microchip your animals!
