    What gets lost in the translation is the fact that when the guy passed, the examinator switches from the formal address "Sie" in German to the informal "Du", which is normally used beteween colleagues (especially in Germany, especially in the military). So there's an early sign he passed ;-)

    Once i got in the Military Hospital here in Germany. My Roommate was a mid 60 year old KSK Instructor. He had some issues in his back and had old scars from operations. He was a really nice Dude. Each morning he started his workout at 5:30 am. When he left, i asked him what he is going to do after hospital and he said: Vacation in Southeast Asia. I said: Nice, and you go by car from town to town? He: No no, i will be living in the jungle and hunt for food and walk from vietnam to thailand and so on. 6 Months. This is going to be great! Nice Dude. And absolute tough. Hope his back problems are less bad.

    Ex German soldier here. The question at the beginning of the hell week about the physical and mental stability of the soldiers is not a psycho trick. It's cause every soldier has to agree that he is mental and physical fit before a hard training so the army cannot be sued from a soldier in case that he was forced to do hard things in a bad health condition. The same question will be asked before every shooting training too.

    Hello Sir :) I have been in the KSK for 8 years. The points that you mention are totally right especially with motivation during the stress tests. You basically see people that did the same in front of you that are your instructors. They dont need yelling they dont need anything to motivate you. They look at you. You know they did it and then you know you can do it. To be fair there are certain parts that they did not show in this documentary for the public to see. And it is not always quiet. You know what I mean. Love your professional point of view. And Thank you for your service. When we needed you in Afgahnistan you were always there. Especially with your Helicopters. I remember a few close calls that we would not have gotten out of with way more casualties. Awesome partners in combat.

    3:30 That's not a mind games or hyping up kind of thing. I don't know how it is in the US, but in Germany we take legal formalities pretty seriously. They are, in all likelyhood, legally required to ask that question so that they can transfer accountability for serious injury to the participants. If the participants affirm, they are now consciously participating in a test that might cause them serious injury "auf eigene Gefahr" (at one's own risk). Even people in university are asked if they feel physically and mentally fit to take an exam. Pretty sure that there's a general rule that you have to ask that question, otherwise people can claim that they weren't given a proper chance to succeed.

  • @XLightChanX

    @XLightChanX

    at university they ask because if you get sick during the exam a doctor has to prove it just happened during the exam and you were fit before, so people don't "cheat" and see the exam, realize it's too hard and back out by faking being sick. maybe here they don't want to give a free second try too haha

    In Finland at Uusimaa brigade (Uudenmaan prikaati) we have this thing called the beret march, it is about 80km split in 2 days, and there are several tasks to do, for example to cross a body of water, a running march of about 6-7 km, cbrn threats etc. If one completes this he/she gets to carry Uusimaa brigade`s green beret if all the other requirements are met. The green beret for us is the symbol of coastal jaegers.

    in Austria, long time ago, we had something similar just for sub officer training, 120km within 2 days and 3 days of combat exercise before that. it was called internally the psycho march. it is gone now for decades, but this was similar, not in every aspect, but in a lot of them. no sleep, task, marching with heavy equipment, etc. a few things your learned during this time: in a team you can walk and sleep at the same time, your body can take more than you have imagine, discipline, willpower and even in the worsed case, teamplay to the end. even i had to undergo this training 3 times, one time i failed because of sickness, one time because of injury and at the 3rd time, we all gave us a promise, all or none. That promise kept us going, from long training nights, over many different task, river crossing and marching back into the military installation with a song. well after this trip, i slept nearly 2 days without a break ;)

On the other hand: We in germany are so used to this legally required question before any official exams, that it´s probably no longer working as a mindgame on us, or even be menacing, more like a "ok, here we go"-signal. It´s the signal that this situation from now on has official significance and legal ramifications, and you just waved all your excuses good bye.

In my opinion it is more a legal thing as we also ask the exactly same questions to people for their final exam after their apprenticeship - just to make they cant take legal steps if they fail. If they don’t feel in the position to go for this, it does not count as a fail, but you will not participate this time of course.

There where in the past violations done by the BW in preparation and education curses for foreign country missions, mainly POW and torture. The BW will not show this, but from the reports there where very sadistic measure taken to inflict extreme pain to the participants. Maybe good preparation and hardening of the troops but for a nation of the 1st world threatening its own citizens, even if your a uniform you are still a citizen of said country, its unacceptable. The BW is doing what it has to do and thankfully unlike the US they are not required to tell everything to the media.

    one thing what inspired me all the time back in my army days is, that our dudes wich commands us, went trough the same shit like us. Testing your mental health was a key everytime when you did a an "education" military wise. Mental health was and is still the most important thing. I had some dude in our company which wasnt strong enough, he flipped out after he got a weapon with ammunition... thats one thing i hoefully will never see again

    I was really surprised when they said "Back to the barracks in Calw". That's actually my hometown. I know someone there who's been through all this and all of this is very accurate. There were some practices they didn't show in there which are even more demanding than what was shown. Really intense.

    @@protektor2399 I think even Germany will waterboard/humiliate/psychologically torture their special forces.... It's perfectly legal to do if the participants are willing. And guess what! If your not willing, your not special forces material and you're out anyway. Hell even journalists have been waterboarded to show what it's like. Not nice, but that's kinda the point.
