I don't know if you know but I know that 'solitaire' can mean precious stone surrounded by same kind of smaller stones. That would match her and us 'Marina and the diamonds'. And she doesn't want to 'be compared with cheap shimmer and glitter' and as I said it means PRECIOUS stone. That's how I think it might be.

CoversByHatch i got goosebumps the first time and i still do. it hits me hard almost every time i hear it. and the lyrics and the production/melody wed so perfectly together, it's beautiful.

She has probably the nicest voice in this one, and the lyrics are so strong and beautiful. It really seems a charming version of valley in the dolls. I am so proud of you Marina.

Every song is a fucking masterpiece

The first time i listened it, specially its first verses, i could picture how my life was a few years ago, struggling to get a job and finishing my career, spending my nights watching the lights of the city from my 10th floor apartment all by myself. It was Electra Heart era, but listening to The Family Jewels back then helped me to not give up, to control my anxiety, to assume my mistakes and figure how to fix them instead of depressing and complaining. You've done it again Marina. You go girl.

this is such a beautiful song to me. in my opinion, the lyricism in this is what makes it such a gem (literally). i love how marina compares her journey of self worth like a diamond in the dirt. she’s beautiful and shining, but things have covered her and made her buried up inside. then once shes found, she realizes she always has had this power and beauty but in order to feel it, she needed to find it herself. just such a beautiful work of art. arguably the best on this album and possibly her career.

I absolutely these lines and it's possibly my favourite part of this album. For me these lines are about growing up & developing alone. Because of the isolation she has experienced, she has become hardened and tough. Difficult to read (both black and white), stoic and unfeeling. There has been no-one to comfort her in her lowest moments - she has had to learn to repair herself. She acknowledges her beauty (diamond, jewel) - but has paid a price to be so successful and beautiful (cut). froot is the best album ive ever heard back to 2015. and i love every single song in it.. im giving my self a rewind through her old songs now.

Six years later and I still haven't gotten over that perfection. One of my favorite songs from her.

I adore Marina and the Diamonds so much. She is incredible on every level. She can sing beautifully with so much emotion, it astounds me. Her lyrics are unorthodox and unconventional but they display authenticity, that’s what makes her real and relatable. Coming from Europe, and entering the United States with the Family Jewels was courageous but a productive endeavor for her. She is really a unique jewel in the music industry, but solitaire also means “solitude” in French. It’s sort of a double entendre. She’s staying that she’s rare like a solitaire which is a jewel that has been put in a separate box, but she likes being alone and her introversion is her hope. Smart, but simple. I hope the best for her music career, and I am looking forward to her upcoming music in the future! I love you MARINA AND THE DIAMONDS!

don't get it? solitaire means, in this case: a diamond or other gem set in a piece of jewelry itself. the lyrics in this song express how she was once surrounded by other "jewels", which in her album "the family jewels", pushed and pulled her each way, causing her to get stressed, angry, and depressed with the family of jewels. "I don't want to be compared to that cheap shimmer and glitter" tells us she didn't enjoy being around the family jewels. in the bridge, "and all the other jewels around me they astounded me at first," this was before she realized what was going to occur to her in the family jewels, and she enjoyed people labeling her so she didn't have to label herself, and she was so hidden from the reality of it.
