The problem (and much of the reason he left), was that the band was locked into a bad recording contract where they didn't make hardly any money from album sales (Misplaced Childhood was a huge seller, but they barely saw a Pound). So they had to tour extensively. The problem was all this touring was becoming increasingly bad for Fish's physical (and mental) health, esp in the area of chemical consumption.

Over time this has become my fave album - not just of Marillion's work, but of any band's recordings. Truly great - lyrically and musically. Every member of the band can be proud of making such a brilliant piece of work.

Richard, I have to admit that when my then best mate and I used to go up the mountain on mushrooms with a bag full of tins of beer and a ghetto blaster, it was usually either the Fugazi LP, Marillion's Reading (iirc) live session (taped from BBC Radio 1's Friday Rock Show, presented by Tommy Vance (R.I.P.)) or Dio's live Donnington session (taped from same source) that we were playing.

What an incredible story! Marillion helped me so much when I was in quite a dark place! Mum was already gone! Then my father passed on just before my 17th birthday. We never did have that first pint together did we Dad! But I tell you now; I put a few away for you Dad after you left; but your heritage & kind, happy memories are with me in my mind and soul for the rest of my days x

unclepabs look up summaries of the book 'Selfish Gene'. From an evolutionary perspective, they have passed on their genes to you. In that way, they live beyond their own years (A Grandmother can pass on her characteristics to their grandkids). But it's up to you to decide if the genes of a giraffe create another giraffe, & when whether characteristics are inherited. 🤔

The later albums (post Clutching at Straws) are just too introspective and lacking in any real creativity. My rating of the 4 studio albums from the Fish era. I’m sure it will be controversial, let the fun begin 😂 1 Fugazi 2 Script 3 Straws 4 Childhood

@@Edmond347 I agree with Fish, so don't argue:) Seriously, thats similar to Roger Waters Amused to Death. An album that is so good in my opinion that it goes beyond music AND social criticism AND art AND concept album that it is in its own place. Right by it is Clutching at Straws. Dark Side I only put there simply because SO many people talk about it that it can't be ignored, even though its not even in my favourite top three floyd albums. But i can hardly listen to EITHER because they are so *&^%ing depressing:) One of my favourite instrumental intros and lyrics of all time is 'assassing'. Emerald lies, meh, fugazi is much better live. Punch and Judy, meh. I can't remember the other songs. Actually my favourite albume would be la gazza ladra, the live album. And Grendel I just love on its own and as such a clear homage to genesis.

I often think Marillion's first four albums tell a tale of adulthood. Script has the young man, 16-18, wild and experimental. Fugazi is the early 20s, and the anger. Misplaced Childhood is a fear of getting older and hitting your 30s. Straws is your 40s and 50s, drinking, and accepting time is moving on and mistakes were made.
