It's “unique”, in today's mainstream music, but there are a lot of new artists out there today I consider in the new-wave genre. (yeah, they call it synth-pop, darkwave, etc., blah blah. 100 thing's but to me, it's the new wave.) This happened in the ’80s too. No one knew who The Cure, Depeche Mode, and New Order when I listened in the early ’80s. Then boom, one guy in corporate decided to make it mainstream. It's great music. I hope it gets more exposure again. A lot of new artists out there. It is maybe making a comeback. I hope so. Call it the new “New Wave!”
