Marcel Proust - In Search of Lost Time Audiobook

Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time is one of the longest novels ever written. It's very beautiful - and in a way a little boring too. This is for all those among us who suffer from insomnia - to send you into the best kind of sleep.

“Marcel Proust was an early 20th-century French writer responsible for what is officially the longest novel in the world: À la recherche du temps perdu - which has 1,267,069 words in it; double those in War and Peace. The book was published in French in seven volumes over 14 years:
Du côté de chez Swann, 1913
À l’ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs, 1919
Le Côté de Guermantes, 1920
Sodome et Gomorrhe, 1922
La Prisonnière, 1923
Albertine disparue, 1925
Le Temps retrouvé, 1927
It was immediately recognised to be a masterpiece, ranked by many as the greatest novel of the century, or simply of all time.”

Two weeks ago I finished Swann’s Way. Months of reading in the morning as I adopted it as my morning spiritual book. When good things happen to me these days, they are accepted poignantly like the anticipation of the mother’s kiss, he knows she’ll be returning downstairs soon. Thank you Alain. Beautiful. Wonderful to be in this company.

In the stillness of the night When the world is fast asleep I lie awake, my mind aflight With thoughts that dance and leap Insomnia, my old friend You plague me once again And yet, in your embrace I find a certain grace For in the silence of the night I am free to roam and roam To explore the depths of my mind And find a world all my own So while others dream and rest I wander in this waking dream And though it may be a curse It is also a blessing, it seems For in the hours of the night I find a kind of clarity A space to think and write And create, so willingly So thank you, insomnia For giving me this gift Of time to be alone And to explore, to sift Through all the thoughts and feelings That linger in my soul And to weave them into words That make me whole.

His voice is stupendous! In the very early days of The School of Life every single video was voiced by Alain de Botton. When, after a while, they began to use other voices I was so disappointed. Very cool, but what is this translation? So much more beautiful here: "Sometimes, too, as Eve was created from a rib of Adam, a woman would be born during my sleep from some misplacing of my thigh. Conceived from the pleasure I was on the point of enjoying, she it was, I imagined, who offered me that pleasure. My body, conscious that its own warmth was permeating hers, would strive to become one with her, and I would awake. The rest of humanity seemed very remote in comparison with this woman whose company I had left but a moment ago; my cheek was still warm from her kiss, my body ached beneath the weight of hers. If, as would sometimes happen, she had the features of some woman whom I had known in waking hours, I would abandon myself altogether to this end: to find her again, like people who set out on a journey to see with their eyes some city of their desire, and imagine that one can taste in reality what has charmed one’s fancy. And then, gradually, the memory of her would fade away, I had forgotten the girl of my dream. When a man is asleep, he has in a circle round him the chain of the hours, the sequence of the years, the order of the heavenly bodies."
