“Marcel Proust was an early 20th-century French writer responsible for what is officially the longest novel in the world: À la recherche du temps perdu - which has 1,267,069 words in it; double those in War and Peace. The book was published in French in seven volumes over 14 years:
Du côté de chez Swann, 1913
À l’ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs, 1919
Le Côté de Guermantes, 1920
Sodome et Gomorrhe, 1922
La Prisonnière, 1923
Albertine disparue, 1925
Le Temps retrouvé, 1927
It was immediately recognised to be a masterpiece, ranked by many as the greatest novel of the century, or simply of all time.”

Alain de Botton and his voice are the cornerstone of the school of life
Whoah whoah whoah. When did my favourite practical philosophy channel turn into an ASMR channel?? Well, I'm not complaining. I need to sleep soon anyway.

when it needs more hits. this is the problem with the internet. and social media. success and winner is incentivized to be greedy. not saying SoL is greedy, but this is the incentive framework.
It's strikingly beautiful how Proust so lucidly and accurately describes the most subtle and overlooked thoughts and emotions.

He has a beautiful voice ❤ is one of the things I love the most of his channel, his calmed voice to explain complex emotions and make me feel it’s ok to feel and be unwell
Alain has the best ASMR voice ever.
Two weeks ago I finished Swann’s Way. Months of reading in the morning as I adopted it as my morning spiritual book. When good things happen to me these days, they are accepted poignantly like the anticipation of the mother’s kiss, he knows she’ll be returning downstairs soon. Thank you Alain. Beautiful. Wonderful to be in this company.
How DARE you call Proust boring. When reading In Search of Lost Time I literally can't get my eyes off the text. His descriptions of social interactions, of dinners, balls, parties are intoxicatingly exciting. Reading Proust is a raging ride! :D
My favourite book. Ever. It's not going to send me to sleep but THANK YOU anyway. Nothing could make me happier than listening to Alain reading Proust.
I wish Alain would narrate all of Proust.

This is awesome. Reminds me of the best times of my life. Fishing early morning, from my little rowboat. Whilst everything is still and quiet, everyone in the cabin is sleeping deep in dreams. Something so cathartic about watching and listening to the world slowly wake in the morn.

Oh my goodness. It’s a god send !! 🥰🥰I listen to your “how Proust changes our life “ all the time… how to put a book down… how friends really don’t matter in the end… i find so much consolation in your voice L. Thank you. My students also love you. ❤️❤️🌈
I'll just grab some Chamomile and settle into a warm daze before bed. Your voice is incredibly reassuring and soothingly clear.
I put on Alain's videos in a playlist to sleep because his voice is so soothing and cozy like sitting near a fire in the winter and it's drizzling ...and add Proust to that and I'm off ❤️ i wish he'd do the book of disquiet by Fernando pessoa

Woww that's great! As you did at 21, I'm still on progress to translating Du côte de chez Swann from French into Indonesian. Just started a month ago
I need this on spotify so I can hear Alain's soothing voice luring me into sleep
In the stillness of the night When the world is fast asleep I lie awake, my mind aflight With thoughts that dance and leap Insomnia, my old friend You plague me once again And yet, in your embrace I find a certain grace For in the silence of the night I am free to roam and roam To explore the depths of my mind And find a world all my own So while others dream and rest I wander in this waking dream And though it may be a curse It is also a blessing, it seems For in the hours of the night I find a kind of clarity A space to think and write And create, so willingly So thank you, insomnia For giving me this gift Of time to be alone And to explore, to sift Through all the thoughts and feelings That linger in my soul And to weave them into words That make me whole.

Yeah! It's actually a great idea, @TheSchoolofLife! Been thinking about reading this book since I heard it from one of your videos! I know it's soooo long, but it must be great. I can feel how in love you are with Proust's. I'm not sure I'd be able to read it, but so glad you read an excerpt for us, we have a glimpse of that great book! Am actually searching for some boredom and Insomnia. My busy-ness doesn't allow me to get either of those.
I was waiting for something like this to happen… this is superb.
I love this so much. Thank you for doing this.
Please continue reading Proust!

Amazing!
My favorite joke about the author for decades : « For a longtime I went to bed early »… and thanks to Proust I felt asleep very quickly ! But then, I am French, so everybody here knows the first sentence of « A La recherche du temps perdu »
I can only wish Alain De Botton continued his enchanting reading. With my many thanks for this piece.
I couldn't believe that I would love this channel even more ❤️❤️🥺🥹, More videos please, maybe some more like this and some other that can be more thought provoking but not much of an advice at the same time. I'm glad Alain came back to the channel and waiting for more videos ❤️❤️.

My problem with insomnia is that my mind is the most creative when the light is off and ideas just keep popping up in my head whenever I try to sleep ._.
And it's read by Alain de Botton. Perfect❤️
This is such an old method that still works today. Most are late receiving the info
ASMR is about something that produces tingly sensation on head and back skin. ASMR is not about calming or sexy gentle stuff.

I didn't think this would actually help me. I still don't know to be honest, but can we have more of this? I'm tired of my insomnia 😔
These are the best bits of Proust though. De Botton never talks about the hundreds of pages of inane party gossip in the middle that I can't manage to get through. If only it were all like this.

His voice is stupendous! In the very early days of The School of Life every single video was voiced by Alain de Botton. When, after a while, they began to use other voices I was so disappointed. I obviously understand the practicality of having other people lending their voices, and my disappointment is no reflection on the quality of their contributions at all, but it just isn't the same.

The Voice ,Divinity in Motion.😴
This is nice
I was in many stories during sleep, but what's common about it they all somehow got to wake me up in some cruel way. As example I was a noble of middle Ages and quickly from simple routine tricked to sacrifice own bloodline for evil entity in most cruel way with own hands and on next day go for suspecting ones to make intrigue go on.
we need ALL 7 books
Very cool, but what is this translation? So much more beautiful here: "Sometimes, too, as Eve was created from a rib of Adam, a woman would be born during my sleep from some misplacing of my thigh. Conceived from the pleasure I was on the point of enjoying, she it was, I imagined, who offered me that pleasure. My body, conscious that its own warmth was permeating hers, would strive to become one with her, and I would awake. The rest of humanity seemed very remote in comparison with this woman whose company I had left but a moment ago; my cheek was still warm from her kiss, my body ached beneath the weight of hers. If, as would sometimes happen, she had the features of some woman whom I had known in waking hours, I would abandon myself altogether to this end: to find her again, like people who set out on a journey to see with their eyes some city of their desire, and imagine that one can taste in reality what has charmed one’s fancy. And then, gradually, the memory of her would fade away, I had forgotten the girl of my dream. When a man is asleep, he has in a circle round him the chain of the hours, the sequence of the years, the order of the heavenly bodies."
I'm debating whether to actually read Proust or not. It seems like a huge commitment, one that makes War and Peace look like a casual evening's yarn.

If you are a reader generally, then the idea of reading 7 books isn't that outlandish? There's no rush anyway, I took a year over it, using "the corklined room" blog as a guide and it's been a life enhancing gift to self.
Proust-a really interesting writer.
Ah Finally I can sleep again
its like a little piece of mercy in the internet
There's a short glitch near the end where a word or two repeats in the @25:00 minute.
Anyone who managed to get to volume 6 must be far more patient than I could ever be.
this should work.. I always sleep when trying to read this book hahahha
I actually fell asleep
For those who suffer from insomnia, besides Proust, try any law book, the thicker the better. Cheap insomnia pill, lasts forever and has no side effects. Good sleep 💤💤💤
2 months of insomnia… hoping to change this in the last week of 2022
Is there a way to hear the whole thing? I looked up the School of Life and cannot find the Audiobook. I would like to hear the entire series from you.
