    Savrawars marc can sing his own song better than freddie haha. you can't say that if you have listened a long time to freddie deeply. marc surely sings more effectively than freddie( you should if you have got singing lessons) but that doesn't make his vocals come close to freddie's. the rawness, the power, the energy, the phrasings, the emotions, the originality inside of freddie's vocals are the factors that made freddie mercury arguably one of the best vocalist, and you cant come close to him just by taking singing lessons and overuse mix voices and copy his phrasings. marc is a nice singer, but when it comes to covering queen songs, he is just a copycat that eventually shows how freddie is an unreplacable vocalist in the history of rock music. i think marc should get his own style of phrasings, vocals, and musics out to the world for the sake of his music career if you dont want to end up as a freddie mercury copycat who tried to imitate him(i dont think deep Queen fans would admit that marc successfully imitate freddie mercury because every time i hear marc's vocals on Queen songs, the more i recognise how much of a vocalist freddie was).

    Amazing comparison, as a big queen and Freddie fan. Everyone knows there will only ever be one. But this to me confirms what me ears told me seeing Marc live and following his career from the extravaganza. This guy does an excellent job in capturing the feel. Even if he doesn’t have exactly the same wave patterns and all of that techno jumbo. Whilst interesting to know... I believe our ears are the guide to our heart.. if it sounds like Freddy and we connect with the music. Marc did his job just right. I personally love to see Marc’s take on these songs. I think he sustains notes better and holds his key better. Not taking away from Freddie but in his early life he was raw and a bit of uncut diamond, then he developed more control and power but started to get ill more often. Freddie’s personality lifted his singing and performances to the highest height, this is something that neither Marc or Adam Lambert will ever get down to a tee! One off for sure in his connection to his fans and audience. Let’s just appreciate that Marc has given us a few more years of that Freddie feeling. Whilst giving us his own music.

    I agree with every word. Freddie's legend is as a "performer" not a singer. His singing is great, and few can even come close, but Martel has just kept getting more and more in touch with his own voice and the emotions of the songs. No, he doesn't demand we keep our eyes on him, in fact to the contrary, he almost demands we close our eyes and listen.

    Ive watched a fair bit of Marc singing Queen songs, and I would say there's about 60% of Freddie's Range/tone that he gets about 85% close to, the other 40% is not really that similar. But with that said he is genuinely a great singer and performer, who dose justice to Queen songs and Freddie's memory.

  • @alexdavis6578

    Well that’s actually because he’s trying to keep his own image in the light. When he started singing Queen he almost sounded Unmistakably like Freddie, but once the comparisons grew stronger Marc was both tired from all the touring and felt as though he were loosing himself, created impersonator (which is an album you should listen to by him. In my eyes it’s beautiful and deeply tells his tale of becoming “Freddie’s voice” he kind of dialed back his voice and started singing higher, and a little unnaturally to escape sounding like Freddie for a few years but then age caught up to him and now he’s singing in a baritone range and sounds more like Freddie than ever’ he’s also been putting in the work too though because he’s a perfectionist ☺️ I met him backstage at a concert and really got to know him, he’s a super sweet guy with an angelic voice. I loved speaking to him he was nothing but warm, humble and welcoming. His concert with Ultimate Queen Celebration was phenomenal too and he sounded just like Freddie! I’ve got some videos on my Instagram!

    The truth is Marc and Freddie sound uncannily similar. If you could have both of them sing the same line 10 times, 5 out of 10 times, Marc would sound almost exactly like Freddie; and 5 out of 10 times, Freddie would sound almost exactly like Marc. When you allow for the usual variances in tone, pitch, control, etc...that happen whenever somebody sings something more than once, it makes it difficult to surmise anything when you can only compare one isolated event. You can't say, "This is how Freddie sounded," and take it at face value. The truth is this is how Freddie sounded that ONE time. I guarantee you he sounded a bit different the next time he sang that same line. When you factor in these normal variances in the human voice, you can safely conclude that, in general, Marc Martel and Freddie Mercury sound the same.

    Can’t agree more. Singers aren’t robots. Every time they sing a phrase it will be different from the last time they sang it. So what, then , does it really mean when we say someone sounds like someone else? What similarities do we have to hear between them to make us think they sound similar or even to the point where we say their voices are (almost) identical?

  • @rickwebermusic

    @rickwebermusic

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@divisix024 At that point, I believe it comes down to vocal timbre, the shaping of the vowels, how much they incorporate the nasal cavity, etc... Look at Billy Corgan from the Smashing Pumpkins. Most people think he has a "high" voice. However, he doesn't really have much of an upper register. His voice just has a lot more treble in it, and almost no bass roundness- because he pretty much sings through his nose.

  • @divisix024

    @divisix024

    @@rickwebermusicAbout timbre... it's pretty much just how the sound waves look like. So how sensitive is our ears to the shape of sound wave i.e. timbre? If I take a recording of a particular phrase sang by someone, and then I pulled a spot or several spots in the wave graph out of place, how far would I have to pull it away for you to notice the difference? Also, adding another one: the relative amplitude of the overtones and the fundamental tone. This affects the tone quality, which is why one could tell a difference of say, a violin playing an A=440 Hz and Freddie singing the exact same note

    THIS THIS RIGHT HERE I’ve been trying to put down what it is I hear in both of their voices and this is it! But, Marc chooses to take the safe route of his vocal ability and tends to not push on his vocal chords too hard to hit the insane highs Freddie forced himself into since both singers are Baritones. Maybe Marc doesn’t have that vocal ability though and has a limit himself because some of his higher notes sound flat when comparing it to Freddie and his consistency of singing high notes like a tenor lol. BRO YOU NAILED IT ON THE HEAD they literally sound the same but with different singing techniques and influences! Marc grew up with Christian music, R&B and the nice easy going rock song here and there. Freddie grew up with the living legends of rock and roll, gospel music, both Marc and Freddie had an operatic background but Freddie’s was most likely more vast. But yes yes 1000x yes

    Some of the differences come from Marc technically being a better singer than Freddy was. What I mean is that Marc has a better technique to protect himself, whereas Freddy would go all out and hurt his voice.

    And face it, Freddie partied hard. Sometimes singing drunk, smoking, late nights without rest. Watch his Saturday Night Live performance, his voice was shot as he supposedly was up late screaming at his boyfriend. Marc is 41 and still has a LOT of miles to go. Freddie traveled some rough roads.

    Great King Rat I hope you have stopped crying by now. Try to not get triggered so easily and learn how to read things properly. No one said Freddie wasn't a better singer, that's obviously something subjective and dependent on each person's taste. That Freddie wasn't as technical as Marc is a fact, it's just science, we know much more today about good singing technique than was available at that time, and Freddie cared more about putting on a show than preserving his voice. So that's why a lot of his live performances are quite rough. Stop being such a sensitive cry baby.

    @Great King Rat Dude. I've only watched a few videos of Marc Martel but twice now I've seen you getting into some argument in the comment section. What is your problem with him? The OP's main point was that Marc's vocal technique is healthier that Freddie's was in that it's less likely to damage his voice. What's your problem with that? Why do you feel the need to defend Freddie so much?! Even if he's saying he has a technically superior voice in other regards what's the point in getting so bothered by it? I actually agree with him that he sang in a less healthy way. I agree with the other person that he probably didn't keep the best care of his voice with his partying and substance intake. I still prefer Freddie's voice and his vibrato is unparalleled. The other time you were saying Marc's voice isn't even close to Freddie's which is quite frankly absurd. He clearly has a vocal likeness to Freddie. That doesn't mean he's better than him or that people are appreciating Freddie's voice less. Seriously man just take a deep breath and actually regard the comments people are making without getting aggressive. Chill.

    Interesting comparison! I think we should also take into account the microphone/pre-amp/mixer/effects recording chain and it's effect on the vocals? Singing through a stage microphone is going to attenuate a whole host of frequencies, in a different way (I would think) than a large diaphragm studio condenser microphone. Even the reverb generated by the room in which the singer sang will have an effect.

    First, having tracked Marc of a bunch of years, I can see that his vocal training has been more exacting than Freddie's. He relies less on Vibrato to attack and keep the note. But Freddie has a "fuller" sound, He brings more deep resonance into the same note than Marc does. This is related to the size and areas of bodily resonance, it's a physical difference not just in their vocal muscles but in where they resonate (chest, head, etc.). Freddie's voice is naturally "deeper" than Marc's. But Marc's sustain is more consistent and when he slides up from middle to upper register his control is more finessed, where Freddie would either shift (noticeably) into falsetto or just push raw power for higher notes. Marc is also brilliant as "phrasing", making his enunciation of the song similar to Freddie's. I've heard him do this like other artists, so it is intentional and he can do more than just copy Freddie.

    I'm almost positive that all the vocal scenes that were non-concert related in the Bohemian Rhapsody film were done by Marc Martel. Those scenes include the "Doing All Right" audition at the beginning, the Happy Birthday song he sung to himself, the "Love of my Life" rendition he does for Paul Prenter, & the short piano sequence of Bohemian Rhapsody midway through the film. Martel may have also sung the "Keep Yourself Alive" performance at the beginning as well, but that could be a Freddie playback.

    -"Who wants to live forever" in its original key. Freddie had to sing it a few steps down. -"The show must go on" ok that's cheating but i highly doubt he would have been able to sing it live in its original key once again. -The entirety of prophet's song. During the highest parts in the verses, Freddie mostly speak through them. -Rock part from Bohemian Rhapsody with the C5. Freddie almost never attempted it live. And he nailed it once or two while Martel can do it consistently. Marc is a natural tenor while Freddie was a high baritone singing in the tenor range. Well yes, he can reproduce Freddie's vocal quite well. For example the one in this video above is great. As you said, apart from the vibrato it's almost the same. It's so similar most people confuse it for freddie. only a trained ear could distinguished the two. I immediately knew it was martel because i often listen to him and can instantly recognise his voice. Yet i was a bit doubtful too. I'm not putting down freddie by saying that, calm down. Freddie is awesole for what he did but he is no god.

    Oh. Marc's pitching for the trailer (for the problem set you gave us at the end of the episode) was just slightly, very narrowly and normally wouldn't be recognisable by normal human ears, higher than the original Freddie's voice. I have the privilege of being able to compare it side by side thanks to Mr. James Rundle, your effort in making this video and posting it in youtube, and the wonder of replay button. Wouldn't get it without those.Thanks. I guess that explains which one is real and which one is the very very identical copy. Freddie's control was just better, and came from... a deeper part of the mouth. (But ofc that's obvious.) Not to discredit Marc, ofc. No one has ever come closer to mimicking Freddie than him, after all.

    If I've understood Marc and Freddie well enough, Marc is a tenor and Freddie was a baritone. The bass and mid-range in Freddie's voice gives him a big sound along with his high notes, but Marc's high notes are a bit thinner and brighter, even though he probably sings Queen songs more effortlessly. Because Freddie, as a baritone, sang in forced tenor register most of his career and that register is more natural for Marc to sing. I could be wrong here, but the difference is very clear to my ear.

    Well, I'm pretty sure that, just as those maestros and professionals claiming 'nothing comes close to a Stradivarius' and later preferring modern violins in a blind test, no one would really differentiate between those two in a blind test if those voices were completely isolated and matched in terms of quality (low-quality audio: oh that must be freddie!). The graph shows their vibrato is as similar as two separated recordings of Freddie could be so yeah, at least in this segment, it can't get any closer to the real deal. Though, you can tell it's not Freddie if you hear an entire Marc performance, I'll give that to you. An impersonator sometimes get distracted, and it's normal, no one's perfect.
