Hard to believe this was recorded 30 years ago - when jazz guitar gods walked the earth. I remember buying the Bass Desires album in 1985 and it has remained one of my favorite jazz albums of all time. What is also great is that these three stalwarts of modern jazz are still playing and putting out albums. Long may they play.

True jazz royalty right here with four of the all time greats on the same stage. It doesn't get any better than Marc Johnson, Peter Erskine, Bill Frisell & John Scofield

In the late 80s, this band taught me the difference between the jazz scene in Boston and the jazz scene in New York City. When I saw them in Boston, it was $12 and they improvised a lot playing about an hour and a half. When I saw them in New York, it was $35 and they played a short 50-minute set!! Regardless, they were great at both shows.

How fun is this?! There was some great jazz happening back in the 80s, no doubt about it. I tend to overlook Sco, but damn he is just so good! I think maybe I just needed time to grow into him, to learn to appreciate what he does.

I started listening to Scofield in 1986. When he signed with Blue Note in 1990 and released Time On My Hands, I became a massive fan. That record is a masterpiece, imo. A phenomenal set of all original material played by a great sounding, cutting edge quartet. I've been buying his records ever since.

Most of his career Sco has looked like a nice English professor from a small liberal arts college. Except that one brief period captured on film here, where he looked like a guy driving round your neighborhood trying to temp kids into his van. Love you Sco! The music doesn't care about your hairstyle or sports coat, and the music rocks.

Strangely, three of the guitarists who have had the most profound influence on me, all have last names that start with the same three letters: Robert Fripp, Bill Frisell and of course, Fred Frith.

I know exactly what you mean. The weird heroin, ghosty country shit he's been doing the last decade is pretentious jive, man. I can't get into it. Too quiet and doesn't say anything. Kind of like a fart that doesn't smell, unfortunately. I still love Frisell though. I just can't take too much of the country shit for more than 45 seconds.

No way is this from '1998' - I mean, just take a look at them - Sco w/ long hair, 80s crumpled 'David Byrne' checkered suit, Bill Frisell sporting a River Phoenix haircut, Mark Johnson w/ a mullet, Peter Erskine's hair still dark...this ought to be from 1990 at best...But thanks for the post anyway.

Respectfully disagree. Maybe not all players achieve it; heck maybe most don't but if you listen to John Patitucci, Dave Holland, Brian Bromberg for example, all get great tone, clarity, in their amplified upright bass rigs IMO.
