he’s been playing crazy unique bass lines on lps of straight jazz and more experimental forms for many, many decades, and is a composer as well, i believe. I don’t know enough about his career except that he is legendary in the jazz community. Anyone who loves this ought check out the duet lp w the late Charlie Haden and Pat Metheny… of course there are dozens/ hundreds of amazing lps of acoustic bass n jazz guitar duets. Dig deep… Jim Hall… Ray Brown… etc

First time I saw them was in 1982 in Amsterdam. Just went to see Wim Overgouw and Scofield,Swallow and Nussbaum were playing as well. That's where it all started. Scofield is the soundtrack of my live.

Saw these guys with a drummer I knew from CT Adam Nussbaum play at 7th Ave South in NYC. Stevie Wonder came in sat next to me with a few women in tow. I was sitting with pals Tim Smith, Eric Pearson, Randy and Michael Brecker rounded out the table. Spectacular night,,,WOW!

Sco started out with a cherry ES335 before switching to the Ibanez. Check out his first few albums.

@@Intao I’m not sure if you are responding to my comment, or commenting on the Gibson that Sco is playing in this particular video. Yes, it looks like an ES330 in the video. My reference was to his first few albums where he is pictured playing a dot neck cherry ES335. I went to see him and chatted with him in a small Massachusetts club back in 1981, and he was playing that same dot neck ES335. It was shortly after that, that he switched to the Ibanez. Somewhere along the line, he picked up a telecaster and can be seen playing that in video footage.

@@kenster3554 his first "serious" electric was an outlaw Ibanez blue tele he bought back some 15 ys. ago. He switched from that Gibson (in very bad shape) when he was offered the Ibanez that decades later - with some mods he suggested - become the John Scofield signature model. Afa tele are concerned, he recently bought a Nachocaster

He was playing a Cherry dot neck 335 at that time, and is seen playing it in the pictures on his first few vinyl albums. I couldn’t tell you the year. My only point is, it was Gibson before Ibanez.

I'd always loved the round and soft sound of Steve's bass played with a pick. I had the opportunity to see them live in Paris (at the New Morning) and I remember the quality of the audience : not a single applause when the choruses switched from one another, only at the end of the tunes. Was a great evening. Thanks for posting !
