Marble Stone Carving w/ Angle Grinder

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This short film is a glimpse of how Portuguese stone sculpture artist Rita Pereira creates her art. She uses marble and cuts it with an angle grinder, one the heavier stone carving tools.
In this session, she creates a small plate and shows off her techniques. There is an enormous amount of dust which made for incredible footage.

What happened to the large marble plate? In the video it looks like as if you start with a quite large plate and in the end all is reduced to rubble.

Very observant, Nick 💪. In the first part, you see that part of the plate is used to make the largest circle possible from that piece. Unfortunately, while filming, the plate broke in half. As this can happen to any artist, we decided to continue and get creative. Also good to know, is that the plates are already rubble as these are plates she gets through donations after buildings are demolished etc. It's 'recycling' in a way. Hope this makes sense

@@1stDayofSummer Hello ! Greetings from Ceylon.I understand that this was a presentation of the technical type. I definitely took notice of the very good dust mask and the grinding disk you use. Also the way you sliced the stone was interesting to watch till the end of your video. And when I thought.. now comes the final output.. I was just a bit surprised. CHEERS.

Shes using a tool with no safety guard and no safety glasses. How irresponsible can you be.

Thanks Anthony! She did wear safety glasses during grinding but those are not highlighted in the video. What other safety measures do you propose? It might be of help to other viewers. Thanks

@@1stDayofSummer Every grinder comes with a guard which covers 50% of the wheel. People remove the guard entirely because it hinders the work. The blade spins at 11,000 RPM on mine. If your hand slips you can easily lose a finger. What i did was cut the guard to around 30 degrees for maximum cutting while still protecting your hands. If she wore glasses while cutting, you should show it.

@@anthonyd2923 whilst you're not wrong, you cannot carve marble efficiently with a guard on, they should have glasses AND an appropriate face shield.

@@anthonyd2923 You realize there aren't real machine tools outside of small hand dremels that can efficiently cut stone into sculptures right? You probably do construction which is where I understand your logic but from a sculptors perspective you simply need to stop talking. Yes the tool comes with a guard and the guard would come in handy with the precise cutting in construction or home projects but as I said their are not very many actual machines that can make sculpting easier so we use the tools at our disposal obviously we know there is a risk and we must be safe with the tool. I don't however believe I've ever heard of a sculptor being injured doing it this way so 🤷‍♂️. I believe you are clearly out of your area of expertise here. You can use it for what you do it for and we can use it our way. As many of us already do.
