@@randomoneforstuff3696 Um sub 5 (or 5:02) is a very impressive mile time. It's not for competition, but only a very small amount of the worlds population can run that fast which is what I think they were talking about. I don't care if you are in good shape and have good Cardio, you need to actually train to run to break that barrier. I honestly think most healthy males with decent cardio would struggle to run even sub 6 without some level of training for it.

Women are still “gaining” when it comes to sports, because for such a long time, they were not encouraged. Participation is still increasing and female-specific training and equipment is still being developed. So we are seeing rapid improvement in WRs for various women’s sports, whereas the men’s WRs tend to see rarer and only incremental improvement. I feel as this trend continues, we will get a more accurate judge of the actual gender gap - and for many sports, it will be narrower than we previously thought. For specific sports, I can only speak to those I have watched. Ultramarathon GOAT Courtney Dauwalter has been smashing races all summer and regularly finishes top ten amongst men. In figure skating, there has been an explosion of young women able to consistently land triple axels and quad jumps, previously only landed by men, and the score gap is nearly nonexistent between the best couple women and the top ten men. These are the two best examples that I know of.

When Abebe Bikila ran a world record at the 1964 Tokyo Olympucs to defend his title, he ran a time slower than Assefa. That is a testament to just how fast this women's world record is.

That's also really amazing for Bikila, I'm pretty sure that the training methods of that time don't compare to those of today. But for her to beat the legend, it's a big milestone!

Its how you said it...500 dollars!!! 😂😂😂😂 But that's an insane price indeed. Im usually a track guy, but her WR was incredible. She ran strong and looked fresh. I have a question: Was she the only athlete wearing those shoes? Not likely. If not, how did the other athletes do, with their PB wearing those shoes?

I think Kipruto also had them on actually, so not a guarantee for success... on the other hand, Amanal Petros ran a massive German national record in them. I think this performance was 99.9% Assefa and perhaps 0.1% the shoes. Strongly believing in them certainly didn't hurt her chances though.

She "might be the gold medal favorite for Paris"?! I still don't think any of us have fully wrapped our heads around what a ridiculous performance this is. I believe that this is even more impressive than Kipchoge's 1:59! Infact, even if Kipchoge had run 1:59 in Berlin, this would still be more impressive. No one can convince me otherwise.

Agreed. Men are close to 10% faster over all distance WRs. So this would equate to a mens time 13 min faster or 1:58:53. Obviously not exactly but it is nuts either way
