Marantz Model 9 Amplifiers

Музыка

First official video I've made of my beautiful Marantz Model 9 amplifiers. The video is meant to showcase the amps, not their audio prowess. KZread cannot do these amps justice!
The amps are running Svetlana Winged C EL34s. I just replaced the driver tubes in the amp to the right with Brimar ECC88s and left the other amp with the "stock" National 6DJ8s for a comparison. The song being played is Chris Thile's "The Eleventh Reel" off his 2006 album "How To Grow a Woman From The Ground"
I've got my iPod plugged directly into the amps via a Monoprice RCA-to-1/8" stereo cable. The Marantz 7T shown near the end of the clip is not connected due to some recent technical difficulties I've experiencing with it. I'll be putting up another clip soon once the 7T has a clean bill of health.

Very nice! Next time I come across a pair of these at a garage sale or thrift store I will definitely pick them up! ...................Just kidding these are as extremely rare and almost never for sale and if they are the price is astronomical. Marantz was way ahead of their time with how well these are built and how good they sound. Hard to beat well designed tube mono blocks! Thanks for the video.

I have Marantz 8b. many audiophiles will say the Marantz 8b sounds better than the 9's. Also i heard from a guy and he liked his Marantz 8b over his Marantz model 2's due to the better high frequency extension.Guy's its the iron in the 8b. hard too beat. They all sound glorious. Most guys would give their left nut to own any of them.Cheers!!!

I used to feel the same way, having owned Marantz 8B's for many years. I recently purchased a pair of 1962 vintage Model 9's and there is no comparison. They possess a musicality and timbre that is even better than the 8B's. This is specially true in triode mode. Most people who claim an 8B sounds better probably cannot afford to purchase a pair of 9's.

+cary marlowe i actually ended up selling these sometime in 2013. i now have an 8B that i thoroughly enjoy, and no longer sweat owning a $15k pair of amps.

@MrSeattleScott Just got myself a pair of Focal Chorus 806Vs for my smaller apartment setup and they're sounding great. Unloaded the Advents rather quickly on CL. I'll step up to a larger pair of speakers when I move into a bigger place that can accommodate them.

@deucejam oh, the irony! yes, an ipod. I don't have much of a system besides these amps and the preamp. working on getting either a Rega P1 or a vintage Marantz 6300 so I can start playing vinyl. I also bought a Maverick D1 DAC for all my digital stuff so things are starting to sound better. Although you'd be surprised how good even an ipod sounds through these amps.

@MrSeattleScott I looked into the Wadia. Currently the only transport out there for ipods right now that will bypass the DAC in the ipod. Wish it wasn't so expensive! I import most of my music at 320kbps AAC. Lossless is saved for those really well produced or well mixed albums that I know I'll appreciate more in that format. Speakers need to stay small for the place I'm living in. If you have recommendations for small bookshelf speakers, I'm all ears!

Nice. You ran the 9s through a solid state amp, not the 7C? Any particular reason.

EL34'S? Do they break up like a 100 watt Marshall when turned up? That would be awesome and a waste of money.
