To add a small correction, Melkor did lose power in coming to Beleriand at the end of the Years of the Trees, so perhaps his most powerful point might be before that point in time. However, with his armies and so forth, I would say that the shadow of his presence was greater than it had ever been.

Melkor at his most powerful would be Melkor BEFORE he created the vast armies of slaves employed during the First Age. Consider the example of Sauron, pupil of Melkor. He poured his power into the Rings of Power so as to create powerful servants who could act as extensions of his will in multiple locations at the same time. Without this, Sauron could exert his strength only at the location he currently occupied. Creating the Rings increased his *overall* power, at the cost of reducing his personal power. The same thing applies to Melkor. To create utterly loyal servants of great power like the dragons and balrogs required pouring some of Mellkor's power into the spell that held them, just as Sauron had to do. Recall the two trees. Once destroyed, Yavanna could not recreate them, presumably, being creations of great power, their creation had depleted her. Melkor had created more things of great power than any Vala, and so he had suffered the greatest depletion. Though greatest of all them in the beginning, by the time of the War of the Wrath, he would have been no match for Manwe mano-y-mano.

In the very beginning Melkor would have won. But after he returned to middle earth he wasted much of his power this is how he was wounded. Manwe would have cleaned his clock. Also Manwe had multiple Valar each one is more power full then many Maiar. And Tulkas whipped Melkor all by himself.

@@zeremendos Melkor knew fear because he'd used up so much of his power that he'd become just as tied to his physical form as any mortal. Manwe, on the other hand, could cast his aside at will, and survive killing blows to it (like Sauron did after having his form destroyed with Numenor). So, in a duel Manwe would win simply due to being unkillable while Melkor was not.

And since nùmenorians lived longer, one would assume that they could spend more time practicing, training and fighting, and therefore be better warriors. Also, nùmenorians were said to be taller than most men, so they would have physical advantage over the men of the edain. Just sayin

Love versus series on KZread. This is the first time I’ve seen one for Tolkien’s characters. Next should be Aragorn vs Berén.

Manwe would simply refuse to fight, being closest to the mind of Eru, and therefore knowing that even Melkor had his place in the grand design. He only intervened and confined Melkor at greatest need, and in the knowledge that his lieutenant Sauron would survive to carry on the discord which is the counter-point of middle earth.

Aragorn was more skilled as a warrior and more than twice as old than Boromir. As Thorongil Aragorn served Boromir's grandfather Ecthelion and under him he destroyed the Corsairs ships during a night raid at Umbar and fought their captain sword to sword. Thorongil didn't return to Minas Tirith where great glory was awaiting him. Aragorn then headed into the South and East searching out the hearts of men and their plans. As Gandalf said he was the Greatest Woodsman and Huntsman of the age. Boromir would have lost in a one on one duel with Aragorn.

@@theenjeneer2493 Ungoliant was only temporarily more powerful than Melkor, after their destruction of the Trees of Valinor. The text makes it pretty clear that actually damaging the trees for Ungoliant to drink from took a good deal of effort for Melkor, and that when Ungoliant devoured the light and life from the Trees, she grew to incredible size and power. This is the only time we get an idea she might be stronger than him, essentially due to the fact the sabotage made him weaker, and her stronger.

One on one, Melkor any day, and every day. Based on allies and armies, Manwë any day, and every day.

This is a really interesting concept, and I like this first video, but in my opinion it is a little too short and concise, especially where these two characters are concerned. I'd have liked to see you go deeper into the various powers and abilities they have, as well as the knowledge of each other and their powers and strategies. I agree mostly with the conclusions you have reached, but I definitely feel they could have been explained more. Again, great concept, good first video, and I would really like to see more.

Because It would have destroyed the world. That happened two times ( the second one was only with maiar, during the War if Wrath), and obviously the Valar didn't want to destroy the land, that was the reason because they fight Morgoth in the early days.

They did not participate in the war off wraith because they did not want to get involved with the biddings off mortals but as they technically created man eventually they gave in but im pretty sure thats only because we asked them to otherwise melkor would have ruled middle earth unchallenged anyway they did get involved but not until the elves men & dwarves we almost wiped out thus they didnt have much off a choice they could not afford to let melkor rule middle earth but again they did not want to get involved some felt sorry for creating us & leaving us to this horrible fate others could care less but eventually they sent a fleet off ships to invade & push melkor back

Cool video yoystan I’m already loving this series! And I have a request could you do angmar vs Gondor video or a what if video if angmar attacked Gondor first in the early third age?

I love this idea. I don't normally care for "versus videos" because they usually just become short works of fan fiction, but MotW is one channel where I'll actually enjoy it because of your attention to (and knowledge of) the original lore. This fight had a pretty predictable pair of outcomes in my opinion, but I think a battle between gods is a great way to start this series. One fight I'd love to see on the next poll would be a rematch between Gandalf and Durin's Bane, but on flat open ground to make it purely a contest of strength/power.

Here's a question. If every evil character ever created in Tolkien's universe were to team up, would it be enough to take down Tom Bombadil? Somehow, I doubt it. :P

I like the two different types of vs here. Most videos only do a one on one fight, but allies and war tactics are a more "realistic" look at what would really happen in such a confrontation. It's good to get both perspectives here.

Missed in this analysis is the fact that Morgoth knew fear, while the other Valiar never did. His fear would have been his undoing.

It's been proven,Melkor is defeated and thrust into the dark void. There to stay until the final battle and the remaking of Arda.

I love your videos! I think a video about Sauron with the ring vs Melkor, maybe at different stages to see how he compared to the elder dark one.

Love your channel, and always a sucker for vs videos! I'm a big fan of the mystery of Ungoliant, and I'd like to hear how shed fair against a dragon. I'm not sure which one she'd be best matched against so I'll just say Ancalagon.

Olorin(a.k.a Gandalf) is a weak Maia. He frightened of Sauron's evil and his power when he was still in undying lands. Sauron is stronger than him Sauron is the strongest Maiar He has the powers of 3(even 4) Valar. Manwe(controlling the clouds/weather), Mandos(necromancy), Aule(smith, jewelry, architect) And Sauron knows Melkors dark magic btw

@@_semih_ You're mistaking Gandalf The Grey/White for Olorin. Olorin is Gandalf's most powerful form.

@@_semih_ Olorin is not weak. He was able to kill a Balrog in his human body and Sauron (without the ring) is not the strongest maia. Eonwe, herald of Manwe for example is stronger.

Keep in mind that Lúthien Tinúviel had enough power, and enough magic, to successfully dispossess Morgoth of one of his most cherished possessions, a Silmaril. I believe that no other single person ever had so much success as an adversary facing Morgoth. Beren didn't help until Morgoth was subdued; and Huan didn't help until much later, during the escape. Never underestimate "most beautiful of all the Children of Ilúvatar", Lúthien Tinúviel; she even won the will of Mandos, with the full consent and blessing of none other than Eru Ilúvatar , to her will. I might have to be a Patron for my vote to count; but if subscriber's votes count, then this is my vote: I'd like to see a compare and contrast versus discussion pitting anybody in the Legendarium against Lúthien Tinúviel.

You should have used DnD language, discussing ranged troops vs. melee, AoE attacks, buffs, and so much more. That’s how to truly be nit picky

If the orcs and trolls are corrupted elves and Ents, would they not have the flame imperishable?

Perhaps you’ve already addressed this subject but, if not, can you present a summary of all the various houses/tribes/types of elves (e.g. Vanyar, Noldor, Teleri, Sindar, Green, Silvan, etc), how they all relate, where they reside(d), the various categories to which they belonged (e.g. Moriquendi, Laiquendi, Eldar, etc), reference changes (e.g. Noldor were referred to as Gnomes in earlier Tolkien works), and where the main Elven characters fit (e.g. Fèanor was Noldor, Galadriel Vanyar-Noldor hybrid, etc)? Thank you. Brilliant work btw.

Evil is not a creation, but a lack of good. Lawlessness, unrighteousness and failure to be good. Think of it as a cancer eating up the life of a man. Nothing is 100% evil because it would lose its ability to function, like rust on a car. Too much rust then no car.

@@MountainFisher That would imply the concept of 'lack'. It would not exist otherwise. Things that are not absolute are defined in contrast, and it is Melkor's creation of evil that allowed us to define 'good'. Otherwise all would be defined only as order and entropy... And what is the fun in that? The Second Law of Thermodynamics says all that there is to say about it.

@@cesaralcaraz819 Movie characters or book characters+? Movie Thorin couldn't even kill one orc (Azog) after numerous battles with him, and inevitably dies but is killed himself. Movie Gimli, on the other hand, goes unharmed through 3 major battles (Helms Deep, Minas Tirith, and Black Gate), killing 50+ orcs in each one without hesitating. So movie Gimli would no question win. Book Thorin would probably win over book Gimli though.

@@jamesnialG that one orc Azog is the strongest orc to live on Arda.The perfection of the orc.He is also the smartest orc to exist.Thorin killed half of the orc berserkers which are one of the strongest Bred of orcs.He killed houndreds of Goblins in BOTFA.Gimli almost died at Helm’s deep fighting the Uruk-hai.

Enjoy your content, congratulations on your nomination from the Tolkien society! Just wanted to suggest a epic character history on Gandalf. Kind of surprised you haven't already. From who he was in arda, to his coming to middle earth and then his return to the west. And all In between.

This was an incredible video, made by an incredible person! Not only do you make sure that all information you convey is accurate, but you also manage to deliver said information in a poetic and consice manner. Here, indeed, is a man whom Ilùvatar has blessed. By the way, are you going to eventually do a "what's different?" series for The Hobbit, or would it be too time consuming even just to do the major differences?

That's a good idea for a video! But for now I will say that Sauron is to Melkor what Gandalf is to the other Valar. He is a Maia, which would place him lower than the Powers of the West and Melkor.

@@_semih_ which letter was this? I would like to read it. Was he writing to a fan, or to Stanley Unwin?, or one of his son`s? "Letters" is a great book,and I always urge all serious Tolkien fans to buy it. I refer to it often. Amazing at how much time he put into each letter in response to fan mail he received!!

@@_semih_ Sauron with a ring was more powerful after Melkor put a lot/most of his power into his armies and fabric of the world. Basically Melkor corrupted the Earth for ever, meanwhile Sauron multiplied his power with a ring and used orcs, trolls,... that Melkor created/corrupted. Tulkas is the strongest in raw power (muscles), Melkor is the strongest and most knowledgeable in magic and has also a very high raw power.

I like how you are basically describing Dagor Dagorath, but something interesting you said makes me wonder. In the final battle it is said that all the good and evil forces ever would be reincarnated to fight, and its also said who will defeat Morgoth and Ancalagon. But Ungoliant is never mentioned and I like the idea that she too would be present in the battle. Who out of all the heroes or Valar could have defeated her and how?

Melkor did win. He brought about all of history. Without him, only eternal boring music would have happened. The world would not have been created at all.

I think you have it about right. One on One, probably Melkor because Manwe as you say doesn't really understand the nature of evil and would be disadvantaged by the depths that Melkor would sink to achieve his aim. But in the legendarium, evil will somehow beat itself and as long as good does its utmost good will prevail! Good series. I look forward to more.

Melkor's biggest mistake was wasting away his power to the point he became so weak he couldn't bare to face one of the Valar. He was a bit a incompetent tactician and Grand Admiral Moff Thrawn would be very *very* disappointed at Melkor's arrogance and having no contingency plan for the fall of his strength.
