Manual ringing of the five bells of Milan dedicated to Pope Pius V

The historic Baroque building dedicated to the Virgin Mary was demolished in 1929 to make way for the new butcher's shop in Milan, Italy. Two years earlier, construction had begun on the new church, dedicated to the birth of the Virgin Mary and Pope Pius V, which canonically became a parish church on 15 September 1917 at the behest of Cardinal Ferrari. The new church had planned the highest bell tower in the municipality and the second dome in the city, which were never built due to lack of funds. The building was realised with mosaics in Byzantine style, which were much appreciated by the commentators. The church was inaugurated in 1929 and completed in 1953 with the casting of five new bells in E-flat major.

The bell tower is only the base of what should have been the real one; fortunately, it retains the possibility of ringing the bells with strings and via a mechanical wooden keyboard, adding to the list of uniquely manual towers in the entire city. The bells are rung by myself and some friends on Pentecost, when some children have received their First Communion.
The old chapel was built in the 12th century by some Crusader soldiers returning from the Holy Land, which is why the area was popularly called Calvairate, a name similar to Mount Calvary in Jerusalem. The old farming village developed around the medieval oratory, which was rebuilt in Baroque style at the end of the 16th century. The church was known throughout the area for its very tall bell tower, which towered over the countryside. The church was united with a new municipality outside the ancient walls, only to be annexed to Milan city at the end of the 19th century. The annexation led to the destruction of the church, which is why all the faithful began to visit the new temple dedicated to the inquisitor saint Pius V, author of the famous missal on which the traditional Latin Mass is celebrated.
