The guys were nice but we were on a public road. Watco security didn't let me walk down on their property to get the rest of the process.

They've been good but it will be hard to get much good footage of them actually working because it's a couple hundred feet off the public road. I need a drone.

A couple of years ago one of the largest cranes in the world was set up at an oil refinery near my town. Must have taken weeks if not months to assemble it! And only for one huge lift! Thanks for posting! I never saw this done!

Bit like 2 brothers helping out a bigger brother with mobility issues.

This is on the ex-Frisco line between Cherokee and Pittsburg Kansas. I lived in a house next to this line in Pittsburg 40 plus years ago.

When I drove for Bengal crane in La, I got to haul one track. Bitchs are HEAVY. COOL JOBS

Having a hard hat in the truck is like having a hose in the middle of a lake.

whenever you have two people or more on the ground flagging operators, only ONE flagger PERIOD Unless it is a two or three flagging pick when the operator can not see the primary flagger. Plus, move your damn hands in a motion that is clear to see for the operator. The finger flagging shows a rookie at work. When I was operating before any pick or movement of the crane or machine doing the lifting, I would get the rules straight. On some jobs a radio is a must. But anytime you can see the rigger or flagger, keep the damn radio in your pocket.

@jimrockford1283 We had to take a crane operation and inspection class at work just over 25 years ago. I can proudly say that I was the only one in the class that scored 100% on the tests. And have the Crane Pro ( Konecranes ) shirt to prove it. I've been retired now for 20 years but still remember a good bit of it. Also had to have other OSHA training besides just for cranes due to the nature of our work. And you are right, while it brings responsibilities, it also brings pride in what you do.

@jimrockford1283 Thank you! Just as you take pride in your work and accomplishment. I do look at it with pride and knowing the fact that the instructor was not expecting anyone to score a perfect score and we had to go out to his vehicle to get it. Even worse was when we had to take our CDL tests, and then 6 years later the examiner remembers you because of the score you got on the HAZMAT test. And retained 90% of it without ever opening the book again for the second test. Some things just kind of stick to you when you have had to work to earn them. I imagine that you are the same way every 5 years when you have to renew your NCCCO certificate.

No part two of the crane assembly. At the end of this video you see them move off the public road. That wouldn't be a problem but they kept going several hundred feet to where I couldn't get a descent video from the road. They are being very strict about walking on their property to record. Watco does have the authority to keep me or anyone else off of the RR right of way and easement. Just like RR Dicks of old they still deal with vagrants and unauthorized riders. There are a number of cases of RR's being sued by trespassers and losing. They've also expressed concerns about recording workers on the clock and on the job site committing violations of safety rules and that hurting the companies position if there is an accident. For the most part it's about due diligence and liability.

Great video. Wish somebody would design a good wind protector for phones, assuming of course, you are using a phone. Watching the first track go on was a bit confusing, but, as you walked around the crane it all came together. A follow on for the trestle removal? Thanks for posting.

thanks for the flowers. On this video I tried wearing a mic with a foam cover on it tucked in close and it did cut off a lot of the wind noise, but not all.

The guys in the track hoes were watching Brandon. The driver was just trying to help but these guys have worked together for a while. After watching them a couple times I have every confidence in their ability.

@Jim Rockford Thanks, operated dozers and back-hoes years ago. If I had waited would see the hoses. Still, a great video and shows the amount of work necessary to setup huge equipment. I watch train videos in Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Bulgaria and see they use small tower cranes for local construction projects. Most are around 100 feet and are used in housing and small manufacturing building erection. Not driving truck any more I do not get to see the country and wondering if they are used in this country that much. I know they are used for skyscraper construction but unfamiliar for how many are used for smaller jobs. Thanks again!

@jimrockford1283 I am sure the Cummins is a good engine. I come from the old school. I am now at age 70 and out of the construction business since 2013. I remember operating the Manitowoc Vicon 4100 and it had a six cylinder CAT that just sounded bad ass. That machine was on a ringer with 300 main and 40 jib. When you hit the pedal, that CAT would talk and stuff moved. Memories gone by and I miss being on the job. Most of my work was maintaining bridges and replacing them. My son in law works for Bigge crane and rigging. Regional manager on the east coast. He has a great job renting some impressive machines and sales some of their used inventory.

@jimrockford1283 I started out with a little drag line total friction machine. I used it for drag line, clam shell and picking contracting small bridges. With all cranes, it can be intimidating at first but later a feel of accomplishment. In 1992 I believe is when license's were becoming a thing of the future. I went through a class in 1992 and practical exam and passed with flying colors. Later on about 2000 we had to decertify and required to have a NCCCO card. Again I got that done. When I retired in 2013 I wanted to get a job with a contractor as an operator at the nuclear power plant under construction near my house. But, I had to give up my license due to diabetes. Once you begin to take insulin shots, you no longer can pass the health test. My days are over now but boy do I miss some of the challenges.

@jimrockford1283 I miss those days for sure. Other than crane operating, I loved operating a bulldozer. Most people don't understand just how much skill is in operating a bulldozer. They just don't push dirt in a pile, but many more things. I don't know how many thousands of hours I put on a dozer. I use to have people ask me how to operate a dozer and if I could teach them what it can do. I would tell them that I was about as skilled at operating a dozer as it gets and if they can find someone better, I want to meet them so I can learn what they know. I have never been to hardheaded to listen to others that can teach me something. If more people would be like that, how much safer and easier things could be. I can still sit here in my house and smell the fresh turned dirt and diesel fuel. Yes, I had a great career as an operator and it did bother me that I lost my CLD and NCCCO license due to diabetes. But that is what is needed in the trade so everyone can go home at night after a long day of work

I never shut off the camera from 1:00 to 32:45. I didn't edit out any of it, so that's real time, aproxomatly 31:45.

there are cars weighting to go around from looks and there is plenty of room why is some one not directing traffic also over here that would require police on sight as you are blocking a road with no signage or traffic control Otherwise thanks for shearing the video Cheers

Yea but you had to change the main cable to a short erecting cable or you would crush the cable. I know I was present on the first self erect field assembly of a triple 8

With the step entry to the job site the low Boy hauling it in couldn't get off the road with the main frame. Self erection would have taken and lot longer and blocked the road longer.

It’s against the law to block a road without permission and police and use it as your own personal property… to impede other motorists trying to get places is also against the law … it is considered kidnapping to an extent. It’s also against the law to drive equipment with steel tracks on the road without plywood or rubber mats being put down first… these guys are self important apparently and do not care about holding people up and using a road as an offloading yard and the damage to the road that taxpayers will pay to have repaired … really sloppy and lazy business practice
