Музыка

by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart
from the stage musical 'The Garrick Gaieties'
-------
California Ramblers as Golden Gate Orchestra on Edison Records - with Adrian Rollini, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Arnold Brilhart, Irving Brodsky, Tommy Fellini, etc.
New York, July 15, 1925
acoustically recorded on Edison Diamond Disc 51590
trumpet solo by Roy Johnston
------------------------
Lyrics (chorus):
We'll have Manhattan
The Bronx and Staten Island too
It's lovely going through the Zoo
It's very fancy
On old Delancey Street, you know
The subway charmes us so
When balmy breezes blow
To and fro
And tell me what street
Compares with Mott Street in July
Sweet push carts gently gliding by
The great big city's a wond'rous toy
Just made for a girl and boy
We'll turn Manhattan into an isle of joy
We'll go to Yonkers
Where true love conquers in the wilds
And starve together, dear in Childs'
We'll go to Coney
And eat bologny on a roll
In Central Park, we'll stroll
Where our first kiss we stole
Soul to soul
And tell me what street
Compares with Mott Street in July
Sweet push carts gently gliding by
The great big city's a wond'rous toy
Just made for a girl and boy
We'll turn Manhattan into an isle of joy

This is awesome! Thanks for posting. Trying to find this at the original tempo has been a nightmare. I'm planning on singing this across the country next year, and this helps a lot. Now if I could only find a person who sang it at that tempo, I'd be a happy camper.

I never realised Rodgers and Hart went that far back, but they met in 1919, struggled for several years, and this piece, Manhattan, was actually the breakaway piece that established them! Richard Rodgers underpins most of 20th century American musical theatre, considering he worked with Hart, then Hammerstein, and finally Stephen Sondheim, his protege.

Odd to hear this recording of what must have been the way it was played originally, not as we are used to with the smooth sound. nice recording.
