Anita O'Day is one of the most unrepresented American treasures. She took standard songs, and turned them on their head. Listen to her interpretation of Sweet Georgia Brown and Tea for Two. She is a jazz icon and unmatched in American Jazz. I do NOT say that lightly. Her voice is an instrument, and if you have the privilege to know her music , you'll understand how wonderful she is.

The dress originally had long sleeves. Legend has it that she removed the sleeves in her hotel room, faced them by hand with a needle and thread ... and hello. New dress. Then she dolled up an ordinary black hat with white feathers. She bought a pair of inexpensive white gloves from a department store. Voila. Killer outfit. Resourceful, even if a bit out of it.

I think he (wisely) abandoned the idea during filming. The fact that she was high at this performance is both hilarious and sad at the same time. Although you would not have known this, as I previously did not, it is not apparent until you learn of her addiction to marijuana and heroin. Regardless, it is a fantastic performance that all musicians, within the realm of musicology, or music history, should see as it shows the “best” (give or take the high she was experiencing) of what she was able to give as a singer, performer, and entertainer.

Half the fun is watching many in the audience and their spontaneous reactions. What a time this must have been. Great jazz and a respectful, classy audience - and no sloppy dressers!

No kidding...this amazing and complex woman was an extraordinary artist. How is it that some great singers of their time like Anita remain sounding fresh and relevant while others of their time sound impossibly old school? It's not the songs themselves of course, and I doubt that it's the voices themselves.

I'm 56 and have been unable to find ANY clip in color during this time---except for WWII documentaries. This is an exquisite opportunity for students of history and song to truly "see" that, as modern as we perceive ourselves to be, times have NOT changed that much!

That is wonderful! I found this after listening to the Will Kimbrough song "Anita O'Day", which is apparently about the songwriter's viewing of this video. The clothes on the singer and audience members are hilarious - from a few years before I was born. I am more familiar with Ella Fitzgerald, but was impressed by O'Day's scatting and the back and forth with the band members at the end of "Tea for Two."

One of our country's most underrated artists. Queen O'Day is among so many US artists which we are on the precipice of being erased to convoluted US history. Scat is the least of it:) Ms. O'Day spoke openly about an addiction to heroin which she says she beat by going on extended hiatus and simply "biting the bullet". Much harder than the old timers may have expressed, but an important comment nonetheless from one who has been there.

Other than Ella, no female singer swung harder. Her tonsil operation when young removed the natural vibrato humans have on long notes giving her another unique tool besides her innate sense of swing and her instantly recognizable voice. And boy did she live hard. She was up there with Lady and Sass in her hard living.

My Dad was a working musician for over 40 years. He always said that there were a few "basic personalities"/types of people. I think he said around 10? Not sure... The point was that, in his vast experience, humans were MORE similar than different. Most of us probably fall into a fairly predictable category. That is NOT bad, despite our wish to be "unique". It is THIS acknowledged sameness which should cause us to be more understanding and kind.
