some things are just funny in retrospective, for example, in harry potter, the original indication was "it doesn't matter what the eyes colours is, he has to have the same ones as the mother", and then, years after, they just forgot and had the mother with the book eyes colour and him with the movie colour, it is a small detail and most will not notice, but is just a big flop and a source of comedy mocking other characters for this, like the fact snape was fooled his whole life, or that he didn't even noticed the colour of the eyes of his life crush, it just destroys snape's character when you notice that detail.

I felt so bad for the script writer not having a direct word with the author

everyone forgetting about Mengo who drew the entire thing...and likely contributed to the story a lot more than we know, looking at her previous works oshi no ko is pretty in line with her style

When the adaption is good, the original material is praised, but when the adaptation is bad, the script writer gets blamed instead. That monolog by the scriptwriter just touched my heart for how true it is. They are so underrated

Some adaption are great, like the One Piece live action, but the only one who get the credit is the original material while the script writer is forgotten in the background. But.. if the adaption is bad (Dragon Ball Evolution, Avatar M Night Syamalan), do people hate the source material? Nope, the producer got the hate instead

Unless you're an idiot who decides to only follow what you see in the LA without checking out the SM (believe me, there's tons of idiots like that...... ) then no one will hate the source material. Especially now, with people being able to say 'this was horrible, the main source is way better' in comment sections. But again, the best way to do a good Live Adaptation? Simple: STAY TRUE TO THE MAIN SOURCE MATERIAL. Don't change major storylines, don't change how characters interact and behave and most importantly, DONT ACT LIKE YOU KNOW BETTER THAN THE ACTUAL CREATOR (THAT was DB evolution's downfall).

Yeah, and it makes sense too because when an adaptation is good, it highlights the strengths that were already there in the source material, while when it is bad, it ruins what made the source good. I won't say scriptwriters who adapt something well don't deserve any credit, but they don't deserve as much credit for preserving the source as the creator. The exception to this would be adaptations that take the material to the next level, in those cases often enough the people working on the adaptation are given credit. But simply adapting something well isn't worthy of much praise since that is the bare minimum.

And then we get western script writers like the one that adapted The Witcher to Live Action, that gave the finger to the source materials and just did whatever the F they want while riding on the brand name of the title and tarnishing it at the same time...

As an author of fiction myself of a lore-heavy novel, if I had an editor who saw my story and didn't understand it, as well as moving or removing parts that are important without asking, I would be pissed too. Art imitates life indeed.

@@vt_hikaru But then again, adaptations can be tricky since the works play into the strengths of their mediums. Can't expect a 1-1 adaptation tbh, especially with monologue-heavy books. Gonna be hell to adapt it into a screenplay or anime. Probably can but might be boring since info dumps could dampen enjoyment compared to reading where its expected to have it. Honestly really is a mix of balance and compromise while also playing into the strength of the medium for any adaptation.

@@vt_hikaru As someone with intellectual property rights to the story in question, she's fully in her rights to say "You guys messed up, it's canceled until I can find someone to do it properly." or spend the money to buy out the studio and do it herself if she has that kind of money and popularity. As someone with a singular story that is only just now released, and no clout, I'd just have my lawyer tell them to stop and try again in a year with a different studio while trying to be as direct and clear as possible with all members who make major decisions, highlighting portions that would be a breach of contract to be not shown or removed from the story. just be as exacting and detailed as possible and make sure the ones making decisions are all aware of the important details that can't be messed over. VERY DIFFICULT PROSPECT. but you can bully your way into getting the emails of every one of the people in the chain of command and do a 'send all.' even if its not exactly secure, and people will probably get ahold of the instructions for the story, you're just making publicity due to a leak.

Keep in mind, Abiko IS open to story/plot changes. She says so in this episode. She’s furious that her CHARACTERS are being butchered. She obviously cares a whole lot about her “babies”. She might have even self-inserted herself in some of them, so to see characters you created and deeply care about portrayed in a way that’s very different from what she envisioned them to be must really hurt. Why didn’t the stage play just create their own self-contained (or even non-canon) storyline that both respects the author’s characters and fits perfectly within the constraints of a stage play, instead of trying to adapt the source material?

Just imagine if "Tokyo Blade" of Oshi no Ko is "Tokyo Ghoul" then it would connect to the audience Ishida Sui sensei feeling!

i mean wasn't ishida itself tired of tokyo ghoul as well? There was an author's note on the last chapter explaining he rushed the ending to move on and make a new manga.

This show really does imitate the real life on what it means to be manga author, and I think Oshi no Ko infiltrated perfectly especially wity Alane's accidental attack on Suki.

You know, I always want to say anime does kind of help me learn to know more about the Japanese language itself, I know it sounds a little disrespectful to its culture, But I feel like I'm being educated just by watching an anime, and this makes me want to educate myself more on other projects from other foreign content.

Reminds of the case of the creator of the Manga SEXY TANAKA-SAN...miscommunication between the author and the people who made it into a live action that the author took her own life in the end😢😢

When the author said, rewrite the whole script she instantly became one of my favorite Onk character more manga authors should have Eagles like her that we know adaptation will get butchered. I’m looking at you, Tokyo, ghoul, and province Neverland. I always get sick and tired of seeing my favorite Mangas get butchered in the anime The Tokyo Blade author is already my favorite character.

@@anonisnoone6125 to be fair she's been saying multiple times that there were parts of the script that she didn't liked and wanted revised way before the rehearsals began, but the crew basically said that when she saw the full play she will come around and surprise, the script was still bad even after seeing the rehearsals. While her outburst to the scriptwriter went a bit too far I can see where she's coming from, it was almost like she was being completely dismissed while the rest just did whatever with her work

Honestly I remembered Hibike! Euphonium season 3 and the changes that were made compared to the novel while watching this episode. I was emotionally very unsatisfied with the changes but man were they good and it takes guts to make such drastic changes to the script (Tatsuya Ishihar is really amazing). But only when I was watching this episode of Oshi no Ko I got to understand why I still felt that the 3rd season of Hibike! Euphonium was so good even with the changes. It was because the characters stayed true to themselves. While I haven’t read the novels in full I still felt that the way I felt about the characters in the anime adaptation and the original characters in the novel to be the same. You can change the story but you can’t change the characters’ identity (I suppose that’s why I felt like Classroom of the elite novels and anime seem to be completely separate works and the characters are really different from each other). It’s funny that I read Oshi No Ko manga but didn’t fully grasp Abiko Samejima’s frustration with the play adaptation of the manga and the scriptwriters hopelessness and confusion of her reaction towards his view of the manga. Man I just love oshi no ko. It’s It so hyped but it deserves every bit of it.

They had to ask permission from the sound euphonium author about a controversial change the anime made and she appeoved. Personally, while a lot of people were complaining about the change and wanted the original outcome vs the anime outcome, I prefered the anime change over the original since it made more sense.

I hated Hibike Euphonium changes and i still do. Mayu was insuffarable even before the ending changes and we didnt got any pay off for the whole anime. I guess getting gold in nationals was the pay off but still... It felt like watching Naruto and Kiba ends up being the Hokage instead of Naruto. I dont mind when a MC ends up not reaching their goals fully but in this case it felt like an unnecessary drama idk.

@lordfifth4520 You are entitled to your opinion. For me, Mayu had to win for them to get gold. She came from a high school that consistently won gold and showed it to be extremely good. There was no way Kumiko, despite how hard she works, would be able to beat domeone more talented than her. It was set up she was doomed to lose, with Taki constantly calling kumiko out for the mistakes she makes durring practice. As for Mayu being insufferable, all of the best musicians in the show have trash personalities. Reina is a bitch durring season 1, a simp for taki in season 2 and a simp and a bitch in season 3. Mizore is an autistic loner and a simp for Nozomi and Asuka can be an asshole from time to time.

People shouldn't be so soft. Author can and should be mean. It is necessary. The scriptwriter wanted it too. The people in the middle are the problem. If I was in this position (of the author) I'd demand a direct line to the scriptwriter and demand the scriptwriter have the right to see all communications from me if I so desire.

I don't think you can say that about scriptwriters these days, especially in Hollywood...

Hollywood no, obviously not, but in Japan's entertainment industry things are much different.

Amazing how Oshi no Ko literally put 2.5 Dimensional Seduction's adaptation on blast like that WITHIN THE SAME SEASON OF ANIME. Then Doga Kobo doubles down by having BETTER ecchi in Alya-san than what 2.5 D provided, and improving the manga content. They are straight dunking on JC Staff this week.

I used to write for fun, both original stories and fanfics. If someone wants to adapt my story but doesn't clearly understand my vision and made changes to my story without discussing with me, then yeah, I would be annoyed too. I used to be part of a casual OCT(Original character tournament) on deviantart and when someone writes my character's personality to be completely different from what I portrayed and what I described him in his character bio, I would get annoyed. I always show my work to the owner of the character I was collaborating with to make sure I got their character's personality, mannerism, speech pattern, and powers portrayed correctly. I would expect the same courtesy and respect from someone who wants to use or write about my character too.

Scriptwriters are already entangled in this game of indirect line of communitcation. If you want a proper adaptation either change the entire system, be easier to approach, or contact the scriptwriter yourself. It is NOT the scripwriter's responsibility when you are at the top.

Not saying that abusing a worker is right, but if the creator is mad that the scriptwriter can't get the story or characters right, then it's better to just change the scriptwriter then if they can't even take time to contact the creator for advice or questions. We have phones and emails for god's sakes. Especially when the ones that approach for the adaptation was the studio side, then it's on them to make sure they get it right and ask the creator for any questions they might have. It's not the manga creator's responsibility to constantly watch over the whole process when they themselves are busy with their manga too. You think churning out a chapter every week is easy? People had gotten health problems and even drop d**d because of the overwork.

As an Author myself, this got to me so hard. Like I would be just like the author in this episode if someone adapted my work but did it in a bad way too. I would nitpick the hell out of the people because I want to make sure my characters and story was on point with how I made them.

I feel bad for this scriptwriter cause he was on the same page with the mangaka, they both wanted to have less dialog, but he was told to add more dialog and then recieved all the blame

Watching this episode invokes memories about Ashihara Hinako-sensei and the events around the drama adaptation of Sexy Tanaka-san that eventually led to Hinako-sensei ending her own life. The key difference is really whether the people adapting the source material actually respect the source material or not. If they really respect the source material and the original author, they will eventually find a way to iron things out. Unfortunately for Hinako-sensei, this was not the case.

She did mention how she complain about it multiple times about it with the editor. Rights manager felt uncomfortable with just giving the actual complaints and dumb it down to it's professionalism phrasing. The editor literally wrote out everything to what she said and how she felt. At least the editor did a good job at relaying the information but the right's manager had to put his hand on it. 🙄 I do believe the animation industry should let authors look into the work and communicate with the producer/director/scriptwriter directly because that would reduce unnecessary problems to rise. I have seen a few anime that were either reworked that did poorly in providing the amount of episodes to tell a story, or didn't provide the amount of quality of the animation for a manga who had top notch in their illustration. That is if the anime industry can change their ways because japan has a difficult time changing.

The problem is communication. Even the editor admits that it's hard to understand what the author truly wants because she doesn't give enough details and directions. Besides that, author's point of view is valid. Rather than saying "this is wrong" or "the characters are acting weird", she should give more details on how she wants it to be. For ex, she can say "I expect at this scene this character would say something like this" or "this character wouldn't act like this, instead he/she would ..." This shows no matter what profession you are, everyone should learn how to communicate effectively with other people. The editor probably just write down whatever she said. Then the management tone down her criticism because they don't understand what she means when all she said "it's wrong" or "it's terrible". If communicating verbally is not her strength, she can just quickly write an outline how she wants it to be, and have her editor send that outline to the scriptwriter.

The manga author was something beyond furious.

From what I saw in the anime the main problem starts with the rights guy and goes full bonkers. If the author sends you something to change and then you get it back and you think its rude and cant be sent off that way, you dont change it and then send it off, you should immediately contact the person above you and ask for clarification on the problems you see BEFORE doing that. it just goes fully down hill from there. the original author shouldn't have sent a rude and angry request for changes, and the editor and sub-editor should have known to tone down the language while maintaining the message, then after all that mess the rights guys hamfisted attempt to tone down the angry tone clearly seemed to change what was trying to be conveyed and mr sunglasses screwed up way further, causing absolute hell to be unleashed upon the original work.

Totally agree with this one. The rights manager doesn't think of the consequences of his action from the very start. From the moment he got the complain, he should have taken note of potential problems and send the note to his higher ups first before writing it in a document to be sent to the production staff. It is just commonsense when your whole job is to maintain the order of business you are part of. But the full blame should still be on the producer's part. The producer (Mr. Zebra hair over there) should have been more attentive from the moment that he found that there isn't any conclusive decision between the two parties involve. I understand that this no direct communication between the scriptwriter and original author is a common practice to lessen the tension between the parties and save time due to difference in location and schedule. But the thing is, this is a huge production that he was spearheading. His main concern was schedule issue and production cost, then his priority is finding a way to make the two find a common ground before the problem escalates. If that meant for the two parties to meet as early as the third revision, it should have been done since the biggest concern for this production is time.

The real villain of this scenario is communication. Imho, the scriptwriter and creator needs to have more avenues for direct communication, without worry of fallout from either side.

Personally, I sympathize with Abiko-sensei. She definitely seems to be on the spectrum, which means that she tends to be excitable about the things she's passionate about and she's predisposed to more direct, upfront, and frank communication over the more circuitous communication style favored in the corporate world. So between being made to feel like her work was being disrespected and constantly given the runaround, her anger was 100% understandable (and in my opinion, justified). Her only problem was that her anger was misdirected due to failing to comprehend how phenomenally ass-backwards the communication structure between herself and the writer was.

I'm all for authors having complete say on how their works r adapted. But don't go around being dicks to people who r only trying to do what they've been told to do. If the screenwriter was known to be a prick and intentionally changes things for the worse, then I can understand, but otherwise, no.

This reminds me of Stephen King’s reaction to The Shining. It’s an amazing film, one of the best horror films ever, but Stephen King didn’t like it because it was a poor adaptation. Just because something is good doesn’t mean it’s a good adaptation

No matter what anyone else says, the Author is in THE RIGHT. No one in their right mind would accept someone literally ruining the characters she has poured her heart and soul to. Heck, Akane literally pointed out the fatal error in the last episode. You wanna change plot lines, that's accepable. However, NEVER, EVER CHANGE THE CHARACTER'S PERSONALITIES. Would any of you enjoy watching a live play of one of your favorite series and seeing the characters you've come to love and admire acting totally different from usual? Example, imagine Zoro being changed from the usual cool badass into a goofy fool. Again, the Author IS IN THE RIGHT AND HAD EVERY RIGHT TO GO ON THE RANT SHE DID. Any of you would've done the same.

I keep repeating this when Oshi No Ko topic is being called "This really speaks about the Idol Industry.", this anime isnt for Idol Industry alone, this is about the Entertainment Industry in general. We can say there is only 2-4% of the entire manga that actually dealt about the Idol Industry. The entire manga discussed almost every type of Entertainment industry drama from adaptation problems (this arc and Kana's introduction arc), production mismanagement (this arc and Akane's introduction arc), power harassment (somewhere in this arc), internet toxicity (Akane's introduction arc), toxic fan community (Ai's story), toxic work environment (Ai's story) and many more. This certain scenario reflects more media adaptations. There are adaptations where you can blame the original author for horrible adaptation due to too much meddling, this is rare but it actually happens. There are adaptations where you can blame the scriptwriter for ignoring the original author's inputs (most common example: live action adaptation of ATLA and Percy Jackson, Hollywood really fucked up many adaptations due to propaganda writers). There are also adaptations where fans are to blame for the horrible adaptation, rare but it happens. But most adaptations are like this, the production team are to blame. If the producer just cares too much for his convenience and profit, problems between multiple parties will surely escalate. But there is also this rare case of a mangaka who stole character design and idea from other mangakas and light novel authors, and made a horrible first chapter of a terrible manga idea of his, just because he wanted to be viral. It surely offended those original authors.

If the intent of the mangaka is to give the scriptwriter more love, man I got hooked, line, and sinker.

Man, Anime is really educational. Thank you Oshi no ko.

Anyone who didn't watch the episode and who haven't read the manga: Wait....WHAT?!

Even though this is a series about about revenge mostly, but people forget this is ALSO about the seeing the under belly of the entertainment industry. Season 1 was showed the idol industry and made for TV mini series. THEN season 2 we got the theater and manga adaptation and later on about making a music video. Season three will talk about behind the scenes of a variety TV show and the film industry and how a movie gets made.

To be fair, they barely announced it was starting up again. I only knew because I kept checking which anime will be airing this season.

I can definitely understand the author’s reaction, having your own story and characters is a special attachment and seeing that bastardized has got to hurt a lot That being said the scriptwriter definitely got done real dirty

The portrait of the director is so accurate cuz they always doesn't care.

When the episode ended, I was cheering for the author. Great job! If all the authors had the balls to speak up when they dislike how their work is being adapted, we would have less bad adaptations. That being said, this author could have handled the situation better. Like asking the script writer to join her in a separate room and really talk things through instead of bashing him in front of everyone like that. But I do understand her feelings. Watching her baby get butchered in front of her was too much to digest. Add to that the fact that she seems rather young and young people are impulsive and it makes even more sense. I do feel bad for the script writer, cuz he did try and the fault mostly lies with the idiots that gave him bad directions. But that does not change the fact that he was still the one that wrote it. Great series. Good video. Keep it up.

i was just watching this video in the background and it took me exactly 8 minutes and 1 second for me to realize this is about inside the show and not the oshi no ko author

So many problem would have been avoided if they cut out the middle man and have everyone sort things out in a meeting so the original author and script writer can meet face to face FROM THE BEGINNING

It's really because the medium is being ruined by a very corporate system of doing things. Although this system of telephone is probably fine in most corporate settings, in an artistic medium it absolutely ruins it. Fiction and writing is a very intimate and detail oriented craft. The most unseemingly important detail can be lost in translation so easily.

Why cant they just TALK DIRECTLY???? I would understand if it had to pass thru the director first maybe even with the producer BUT LIKE 7 DIFERENT PEOPLE??? Waste of time.

I hope what happened with episode 2 should be the case with Promised Neverland Season 2. If only the author is like Abiko Samejima, the season 2 wouldn't go that ungodly horrible.

Anyone painting Abiko-sensei as a "villain" is a short-sighted tool with complete lack of intelligence. People who voice with just their feelings without any actual thoughts going into it. She's been voicing her concerns for months, OF COURSE she's gonna be frustrated. It's her own work here. The only one really at fault here are the editors inbeween the communication and the stupid system itself. Also, this plot is basically identical to the one in SHIROBAKO. The only difference being, that one was about a malicious incompetence whereas here it's bureaucratic incompetence. The end result however is the same.

This author has 50mil copies sold, Oda has 550mil copies sold, so I wouldn't compare them. Gege or Horikoshi would be a better comparison IMO.

sales don’t equal to the quality of a manga/comic if so dc and marvel story’s would be concerned way better then what most manga has to offer but that’s just not true so 550 mil sales great tho

Obviously Tokyo Blade is supposed to represent Samurai X/Kensin if the manga was released in the 2010s,it even takes in the same period as Samurai X.

You begin to see why authors don't pay as much attention to what the scriptwriters do

It shows both sides of the coin both authors view and scrip writers. Showing is how it works and what happpens to make it

I feel all this could have been resolved if they had just let the author meet the script writer earlier in the process rather than playong the dumb telephone game. Either way, loved the portrayel of this problem in the episode! Indeed very insightful to how things apparently work in the industry 👌

Imagine being a scriptwriter and fan of the series but only for the creator (Ur hero) to hate ur revision and basically think ur not a fan of the original work and wants u gone from the script. Ngl I either would have been in deep depression or worse if I was in that position so mad respect for the scriptwriter for handling that situation n still was find with the team using his name for the credits. Also the moment when he explain to Aqua about how adaptation is bad, then they will get treated like a war criminal (Which guess that’s most adaptions in real life nowadays and not saying all adaptations can get off the hook cuz the whole team who done Live action DB Evolution, Avatar, Cowboy Bebop, etc still deserve criticism🙄) verses if the adaptation is good, then 9 out of 10 the original author will get more praise (Like Netflix One Piece). I mean the scriptwriters will still get their paycheck but still the role sounds hellish

The best comparision to Tokyo Blade in real life, is Tokyo Ghoul which has a similar amount of copies sold and both are apparently well known in their worlds.

Chibi usually I'm not one to complain in regards to the way you title or thumbnail your videos, but this title is pretty clickbaity. The way you worded it makes it sound like the Author of Oshi no Ko is upset in regards the way this episode was adapted. Not the in-universe author who is upset.

As much as I love Japan and its culture, but this hierarchy system is just stupid. If the scriptwriter and author just sat down and discussed the details together directly without this telephone game, a lot of this could've been avoided and things would've been so much easier and more fluid

Sorry if this will come too aggressive but I put the blame on that black white haired Producer. He is the middle man of this project and everything revolves around on his decision on this very project. For him to ignore the latent complain of the mangaka and the manga studio staffs since it is hard for his part to adjust is just blatant disrespect for both parties. The mangaka and scriptwriter having a communication problem is a huge concern for every media adaptation since it will just cause unnecessary drama as seen in this episode. He escalated the problem since he doesn't give a chance for the two parties to actually met and have an agreement on how the project will move. If his main concern is just that, adjustment on scene and props, it reflects that his main problem is how much budget can he must give in this project.

Lowkey tho it got me fooled with the title

I 100% sided with the author, sure she should've spoke to the script writer more calmly but I'm putting myself in her shoes. So if I intend for a character to be portrayed a certain way I would not appreciate if the script writer changed that for reasons like time constraints.

Well... Of course Abiko~sensei don't wanna make her live action masterpiece end up like "Dragonball Revolution" 😅😂 (I kinda feel that)

I hate to be that guy but, I AGREE with the author within the story of Oshi no Ko. There are sometimes when the anime is as good as the manga, or some cases, the anime surpasses the manga. BUT there are also plenty of cases where the anime is utter trash and then you read the original and go, "Wait, this isnt that bad... how the F did this turned into that garbo?!" So yeah, if the adaptation is turning into garbage, IMO the original author should have absolutely the right to change everything or just can the project IMO.

the author may be too harsh but at the same time it's understandable since her actual word never reach the scriptwriter which make her more frustrated because she's sound like broken record everytime she's say the script suck.

I think this can be chalked up to miscommunication.

I guess this is how Ishida Sui felt after the tokyo ghoul adaptation.

I was just thinking about the writers of the ATLA while watching this episode

I'm on the side of the author (regardless of the the lack of tact). There's a saying "the road to hell is paved by good intentions"...even if the person on task is fan and puts the author on a pedestal, some people are just not up to snuff. It's like that woman who tried to "restore" that portrait of Jesus Christ, now looking like a potato. And speaking from my own experience being in the entertainment industry as former game dev artist, this sort of -constructive- _destructive_ critisism is more common than you think. It can make or break a person. Most of us learn to grow thicker skin, usually taking the mindset of "you're right, I'll do better next time" and not letting it get them down, or "my boss is an idiot, I know I'm right" (I was part of that crowd)...while others who can't take the heat of the kitchen will start to self-doubt, suffer depression, and eventually quit.

I mean can't blame the scripwriter for it in this case since what the author wanted had to be filtered through multiple people before arriving to him. If the author and scriptwriter had a direct line of communication, it could have been prevented.
