The song was inspired by a friend of the band, who loved to clown around by making insane stories like the one told here. I think Maynard or the drummer Danny Carey has said in an interview that this friend of theirs one day bursted into their studio, was frantically jumping around and had a nervous vibe around him. He told them the story about how he was kidnapped by the aliens and something along those lines, and Maynard was so inspired by that "performance" that he wrote this song about it. I love the fact that you saw the humor in the song. It is quite silly in many ways, but the way the intro (Lost Keys) portrays the song and how complex and overwhelming it is, it usually trumps the humor aspect of it. You also apologized that you weren't talking much in between. I, and I'm sure many others, prefer that you don't talk over the piece of art that music can be. I highly prefer that people focus on the piece and give their feedback afterwards. When you talk over a song as complicated as this, you instantly lose focus and it leaves an impression that you are not that interested in the thing you are reacting to, but more of how your persona is shown in the screen of the watchers. Love, love, love your genuine reactions and enjoyment of music I've held close & dear for over a decade already, please keep on uploading your progress of delving deep in to the world of Tool! Would love to see your reaction to Pushit & The Salival version of it!

Bill Manspeaker told this story also when he was telling Tool stories to a group and people kept incorrectly saying it was written while on DMT. He he was in the studio with the band listening to some shit they were working on and the friends came in talking bout some crazy shit which inspired this song. The following day Manspeaker and some others went out to the area of the desert where it supposedly took place and took some photos of some weird shit.

The song is about a guy who took hallucinogenic drugs in the desert outside Los Angeles and had one hell of a trip. The full name of the first song is Lost Keys (Blame Hofmann), referencing Dr Albert Hofmann, who discovered LSD and pioneered research into hallucinogenic mushrooms. If you havent heard Third Eye yet, definitely check that one out too. Similar theme to this.

An April 7, 2006 post on toolband.com specifically mentions Dr. Albert Hofmann stating that on that date he synthesized LSD. In this song, it is meant to be the first time anyone used LSD - this is the reason why he is so freaked out and no one knows what is wrong with him.

all these replies are speculation. One of the members of the band explained it as a song about a guy going to area 51 and sitting outside the gates. His plan was to trip on acid, X, and DMT and watch for paranormal activity. To his surprise he is actually abducted by aliens and they gave him a message but he cant remember it cause he was tripping. The mind freak is he doesnt know if it was a trip or a real experience. In the beginning he states 10 to 2am, X, yogi DMT. and later In the song he states "the blotter got right on top of me." LSD is taken orally on a small strip of paper called blotter paper. People need to stop just making crap up and saying it. Read the source material you morons

The beginning is how peaceful and calm he felt on the ufo. The craziness comes when he's back on earth in hospital, dealing with docs and nurses, getting treated like poo. Also, never forget your pen when you get abducted by aliens.

There is an error in the lyrics that must be dispelled. When it says "Bob help me." at around 14:52, it is actually a misquote. The actually lyrics are "Bog help me". This is a quote from the movie 'A Clockwork Orange" by a character who states "Badness is of the self, the one, the you or me on our oddy knockies, and that self is made by old Bog or God and is his great pride and radosty." YEAH, for real Tool can make you dig deeper into who you are & how you think.

Love the music ...DMT....I am older than your grandfather ...my belief is on some level......DMT trip plus partially what it was like and the things he could grasp and bring back couple it with reality or better said his intention whether conscious or not. Once again it's only an interruption (near death which might be near DMT for many) the meanings is what you take from it.

This is best listened to a little hi, in the dark, looking at a fish tank with weird fish in it. Try it.

The song is about tripping on psychedelics and believing you communicated with aliens.

And the moral lesson of this song is... Stop and think before asking someone to tell you everything that's bothering them!!!

"Please don't..." lol, Mana. I believe you know that "shit the bed" in the song is a metaphor like "dropped the ball", "screwed the pooch" and others that pretty much describe a MISERABLY EPIC FAIL. This song (and album) blew me away in '07 when it came out and to this day has never EVER shit the bed for even a second.

Has TOOL ever openned any of their concerts with Lost Keys? Its the most bone-chilling concert intro music ever.

Yes they did! at least during European Tour in 2006. Saw it then in Grenoble, in France, just after the release of "10000 Days", end of May . Fun fact, they fucked up during "Rosetta Stoned" just after (Yes even Tool can do this!). It was a nice live anyway in a smallest venue I ever saw them (3000 people)

DMT actually he says in the first verse. And it’s about a trip that one of Maynard friends had when he was tripping and he thought it was funny so he made this song
