    Yeah how many rich people do you know that divide their money into 20 different envelopes like that? How many rich people do you know that carry $20k on them? That lady had each envelope stuffed into different purses too. She also repeatedly lied about it. How many times has anyone that legitimately came across their money lie over and over about it? My guess is that lady owns a nail shop or Thai restaurant, somewhere people pay in cash. She then pockets the cash instead of depositing it so she doesn't have to pay taxes on it. She then travels back to Thailand and deposits the money there. Then when she goes back to the UK she can freely spend the money. Flight probably cost her $900-$1000 and she avoided paying $8-$9k in taxes. Or she is a mule for illegal workers. She carries back $20k for 10 different people and gets to keep 25%. Again $5k for a $1k flight is pretty good. Do that once a month and you can profit almost $40k a year. A visa card is safe, secure and accepted around the world. She can walk into any bank anywhere in the world and withdraw every cent. So, tell me why would a legitimate person carry that much cash?

    it's about the government wanting to know if you've paid taxes on it. If it's in a bank account, and there is some kind of deposits that they can't trace, it's a red-flag. These banks report odd deposits like if you deposit 1,000 cash per month, they figure you did not pay taxes on that and report it. the IRS wants their money. If you withdraw it, you would have a receipt. That's what customs want to see.

    @Victor Murat I was about to debate you, then realized that you were right. For some reason I thought we had fewer countries; but after looking it up, we have close to two hundred on this damned planet of ours. Though that is according to the "UN" so not sure whether those numbers are really true or not (since I don't take the UN as a credible source) However, I do hope Trump changes that. We do need to get rid of it, we do not have unlimited supplies and resources in this country, we can't support every damned person coming here (espiecally those who refuse to contribute to society and instead want to be a burden. It's why I hate welfare so much, because sadly we have family that are generational welfare families, IE: families that have lived on welfare for years and where no one has ever worked a job, or has, but lies and still collects welfare)

    The frustrating part of this to me is that the officers expect foreigners, with non fluent English ability, to understand them when they are speaking at a normal but fast speed. Why are they not trying to speak slower or speak easier English, so they can understand? If the officers did this they might get better cooperation! As a TEFL teacher this is frustrating for me to watch at times

    The more frustrating part is how are these people who’ve been in the UK for 2+ years don’t know basic English. If I was moving to another country I’d learn basic phrases and learn how to speak to their boarder patrol in their language. It’s impossible for boarder patrol agents to understand every language they may come across. When moving why not at least learn how to say “I speak so and so language I need an interpreter” in the native language of the country you are moving to?

    It's just like in the US. When migrants come and work illegally, they work for room and board only. They have no cash in their own pockets, so no healthcare or visits to a dr if needed, no schooling for their children, no childhood immunizations, no freedom what-so-ever. I'll never understand how some Americans can think this is a good thing for these poor people. It is, absolutely, modern slavery. The fact that the UK charges businesses 10k per illegal worker is amazing, I think. It's a good deterrent, and also the fines can help them get back home, visit a dr, for health checks, and cover some of the expense in taking care of people who don't pay into the government to help with these costs.

    I'm sure whatever country you come from you have laws you must abide by. The UK has good reason to seize money when it's over the limit, it's written into the rules and regs of travelling in and out of the UK which is there for everyone to read. The officer doesn't know if this money is illegally obtained from drugs, for terrorist use or similar. Most of the negative comments in this post have probably been written by illegal law breaking immigrants anyway because that's all they know beginning with sneaking into the UK illegally and slowly ruining this great country.....

    You have to understand, its not normal for someone to go through the effort of cashing his money, travel with it physically, which adds so many layers of vulnerability just to carry it in the form of paper. If you want to transfer money safely, just bank transfer and it will be there in non dodgy extremely safe manner. Its just fishy, its not banned. If the fella is cheating the system and taking the money out, this is the only way for him to get away with it.

    The Taxi driver was traveling to Eriteria with 1500 € which was seized because he could not show bank receipt . An illiterate Taxi driver I don't think carries around a receipt . The bank statement could prove that . However seizing all his money is unfair & jeopardizing his voyage home maybe the money could provide for his family . The UK BORDER AGENCY could have seized most of the money , but allowed some cash for his travel till he returns to show proof from his bank . This is justice not being autocratic just on supposition .

    It really bothers me that anyone has to justify where the money on their person comes from. It seems the burden should be that unless the government can definitively point to a crime committed to obtain the money, the assumption should be that the money is the property of the individual, regardless of their other disposition with regard to their residency.

  • @lighten_up

    @lighten_up

    @M I wholeheartedly disagree. Having a huge sum of money on you should not be a jumping point for an investigation. Money is legal and there is no law that says that you or I are permitted to carry a maximum amount on us, over which we are obligated to justify to law enforcement that we are entitled to hold such amount. I agree with the premise when it comes to items that are deemed illegal, such as drugs, but legal tender should not be confiscated in my opinion, because, as stated, it is not illegal to have money. Can you imagine being detained because you have a Rolex or are wearing an expensive piece of clothing and being obligated to justify why you are worthy of owning such items? I am okay if money is added to an investigation that is based on something that is illegal, but not as the initial, single item to start an investigation.
