  • @kalevipoeg6916

    @kalevipoeg6916

    6 ай бұрын

    Well, no, it was fucked within the first one or two blows, to be clear - that was along the spine which definitely did damage that would have killed the cat eventually even if it escaped - but cats are actually shockingly stupid and stubborn when it comes to knowing when to fuck off - partly because they get their claws hooked in and it's hard for them to get them off and just run. It was tangled up with the dog and not in a good position to run off so it went into latch-on and lock-down mode, not understanding that the attacks were coming from the outside, not the dog. That, or the machete is incredibly dull - a good, sharp machete swung by a strong arm would - I GUARANTEE you - at least partially sever the spine if swung correctly on the first blow. My bet is it's a combination of both - the blade could be a LOT sharper and has probably been siting there rusting in a truck bed forever, plus the cougar is too focused on trying to win the fight with the dog to realize it's being literally killed by the man. Also you can see at one point the dog gets in the way and is almost hit, so the man is having to be careful with his swings too to protect the dog. He's swinging more softly as a result with a likely blunt machete. I've seen a GOOD machete cut a deer carcass literally in half in one blow though so...yeah, a properly maintained, really sharp one will cleave that spine right away, swung properly. Easier said than done of course - if it were my dog I'd be careful not to hit my boy either. Personally? If the end on it were sharp and I couldn't get a good swing in, I'd get to the back side of it - away from the claws - and stab it between the ribs.

    Note for anyone else that ever has to do this is in an emergency use the tip and stab instead. Far less risk of collateral damage to the dog and far more effective, with as long as he took he's lucky the dog didn't die. Even on a dull blade the tip is still pointy enough to pierce and the cat would've stopped immediately when you skewered it.

    I’m actually really surprised that the cougar just refused to let go even after being hacked at so many times. Most cats would’ve just given up and ran to find another meal after the first couple whacks. There’s no reason to go down for a meal unless it was really really desperate and it didn’t seem like it was malnourished. Weird. *EDIT - I googled it. The cougar was indeed very desperate. After officials examined the body, they concluded it had been starving and was close to death due to many infected porcupine quills in its paws and and mouth. It probably had not eaten for weeks when they found it. Unfortunately the dog that belonged to the man’s girlfriend did not survive and had to be put down several days later due to its massive injuries.

    Take it you've never peeled an animal before? Hacking it directly on its back is possibly the worse spot to hit it, however the only spot he really had as soon as it let go he should have been going for it's neck. Theres a reason animals attack under the chin part of the neck vs back / spinal cord. But yes it wasn't as sharp as it could have been.

    They're exceptionally durable to attacks from bladed weapons such as claws. The difference between claws and a machete though is the fact that claws have a puncture component to them which sneaks through the natural armor that fur gives. It's why spears and bows and thrusting weapons were the go-to tool of choice for hunting for thousands of years. Very few mammals developed defenses to puncturing attacks with exceptions such as the pangolin and armadillo existing.

    You are actually most likely correct. When hit with something that would have caused immediately copious amounts of pain, no more than three hits would have made it run away for self preservation. The cougar's muscles most likely locked into position just from the amount of shock to the system. But this obviously is merely speculation as we have a distanced view from a crap camera. The man swinging for the fences is the only one that would truly know, but I doubt he took a second to observe that closely. He just wanted that bastard off his dog. I say he deserves a stiff drink and that dog deserves a good steak dinner

On leash or off leash, if a cougar has its sights set on an animal, it can and will ambush. This cougar is young, yes, but also an adult in its prime; they just aren't huge animals which is why they rely on ambush tactics.

That it's why it's stupid and irresponsible to bring pets offleash, or kids for that matter, wandering through the brush in cougar country. It's literally putting a prey item on display and expecting,(or asking) for any number of animals to help themselves to meal. These people were in the cougars home, not the other way around.
