Your version of 'funny' does not have to align with mine and vice-versa, and that's toally fine, we both can still be right within the confines of our bad takes on what humor is. But he was also a brilliant performance artist. IMHO Andy was not really aiming for the laughs, he was crafting a mind-bending experience. I don't even think he took the audience into consideration most of the times, he was just performing for the sake of performance. I drove for a cab company on the west side of manhattan in the 70's. We had characters just like the TV show Taxi, including a "Starter" who was a short bald headed man who towered over us behind a glass window in an elevated booth just like louie. You had to "shape up" which meant you had to wait a few hours for an available cab, so there were all sorts of characters sitting around for several hours a day. I was floored by the TV show - it was so true to life for me.

Someone with whom Andy worked who really understood what he was doing was Jerry Lawler. Check out some shoot interviews with him discussing working with Kaufman. Andy was a huge fan of professional wrestling, and had a tremendous instinct for drawing heat as a heel. He could also draw the sympathy of a babyface. He was a walking wrestling promo. Hollywood wasn’t ready for that.

The tears that start to form in Mr. DeVito's eyes as he is relegating the story of Carol Kane poking Andy in the coffin as she didn't believe he was dead just shows how much Danny loved him and had hoped it was the best prank ever pulled by Andy on his friends.

Sometime during the mid 1970's I saw Andy at a small club on Long Island named My Father's Place. The reaction John Belushi described to Danny is the same reaction the audience had at that club. For a while, no one was sure if Andy was putting us on or if he was really that awkward foreign guy. Right at the moment when everyone was convinced that what Andy needed was a to be given the hook, he did his Elvis impersonation and the audience reacted the same way in which the scene is portrayed in Man On The Moon. That night, Andy was the opening act for a popular musician and he made such an impression that he was the only thing anyone could talk about at the end of the night. I cannot recall who the main act was!

Amazing interview, and I may be repeating what others commented but the documentary “Jim and Andy” is incredible. I don’t think anyone else could have done the movie Man on the Moon justice. I suppose Peter Sellers was equally committed to the bit (see documentaries about how directors hated working with him because he refused to break character for the entire shooting of movies like “Dr Strangelove” and he even refused to break character when his mom visited the set of dr Strangelove and that was their final encounter sadly). But aside from the long deceased Peter Sellars I think only one guy could have played Kauffman and we’re lucky Jim Carrey committed so hard to those characters. And I love how much love and respect Danny DeVito has for both men. Again, amazing interview and DeVito went up another peg in my book, which is hard to do since he was already awesome before I saw this.

I am a writer, and former producer/host of TV shows. As I watch Danny, I'm thinking that Danny as himself is a superb character...quieter, more nuanced. The film Man On The Moon is one of my favorites, and I think Carey's Tony Clifton is the funniest of all those created...including Kaufman's. Jim took the craziness to a bit higher level, where Andy's Clifton was a bit more subdued. But to get Clifton, you see, you have to go to the moon.

It is amazing that this interview was 1999 ! The last century ( 20th ) . Seems so long ago. Andy Kaufman was a absolute genius!
Why are there thumbs down for this video? Don’t understand. Great listening to Danny.
Great interview. I went and saw Andy Kaufman at the Improv so many times. Very strange...wouldn’t talk to anyone else at the bar. All his performances were so offbeat. Also saw Freddie Prinze and Jimmy JJ Walker there.. fun times.
My wife and I just watched the movie last night, and loved it!
Man on the moon was amazing and so was Andy
Some people refer to multiple personality disorder...I think Andy had multiple personality IN-order...what a talent
When he says, "Andy came to the set or Tony, not Jim." To fully appreciate that you would have to see "Jim and Andy" the documentary on how much Jim went into Andy. He came as Andy for everyone there, the cast, crew, anyone that knew Andy and wanted to meet him. Andy's daughter that never met her father.
Great interview. Thanks for the video.
R.I.P. ANDY KAUFMAN! LOVE THIS INTERVIEW AND I LOVE THE MOVIE!
Thanks a lot for this interview... ❤️💯
Love Danny, a great guy, and his wife Reah, two brilliant actors, and really grounded people, grew up watching Taxi, but Danny is great in everything.
Devito is an amazing interview. I could listen to him tell stoires for hours.
Danny so cool, great interview. Speaking about Andy with reverence.. cA
Favorite show of all time, and the best casting of all time Danny De Vito, genius
That was a really enjoyable interview. Nice one, thanks :)
Love Danny! (and Andy!) Great interview!
i love danny devito.he is amazing.i loved him as the penguin.he is one of my favorite movie stars.
I think Ive watched this 6 times in the last 2 days. Cant get enough of danny/andy/taxi Dannys stories here are 💯
Great interview. Andy was a great man, as a big fan I really enjoyed Jim's portraying of him in Man on the Moon. Great movie.
Andy Kaufman was born before his time - Casting Carey as Kaufman was genius! 👏👏👏👏👏
I truly love Andy’s work
Danny DeVito must be one of the sweetest guys in Hollywood. Gives full credit to screenwriters, a gentleman to interviewers, lovely to his fans, the stories about how he and Rhea cared for Mara Wilson during Matilda. This is a great interview.
Beautiful homage to Andy Kaufman. To think that they thought Andy might be pulling a prank at his own funeral.
Greatest movie I ever see "Man on the moon" , Danny Devito is talking truth, Jim Carrey did brilliant job. Thanks to Danny Devito giving us this incredible experience.
That was beautiful!
“Thanks Charlie”

Danny is a very intelligent dude.
Hard to believe THIS was 20 years ago (!)
The greatest prankster of all time is the one who gets poked in his own funeral.
Thank you Danny....;-)
Great movie great actors jim and Danny and especially Andy Coffman the legend👑 royalty comedian
What a fantastic interview.
I wish they would run Taxi again!!! Loved that show!!!
Danny DeVito was carved out of the mists of time.
That ‘s a great movie I love it till today...thanks for share this interview what a Great actor is De Vito ...best wishes all
Interesting interview, of how a film project germinates, big name director and production co, finances first, players next, and the principal actor, & strong screenplay, most important, well done♡
Danny DeVito is a good guy.
This movie treatment handles ANDY like he was some surreal painting and a clever fiction.
Thanks Chollie
It actually brings tears to my eyes to hear him describe how the film got going, and his feelings about “a sweet guy,” the inimitable, inscrutable Andy Kaufman.
I want Tony Clifton and Jiminy Glick to have an interview together
Love u Danny ur class act great interview 😁🇨🇦🇨🇦
The genuis shouldnt make me tearup but it always does
I guess I need to rewatch Man in the Moon!
It's 2018 and I miss Andy still..misunderstood
Superb movie, great interview
Danny is so intelligent.....DAAAAAANG! 😝♥️
Danny is one of the best . He’s really a class act . I’ve liked him from the first time I saw him in twins back in 87 or 88 when I was 7. Then later seeing Louis Depalma and of course cuckoo‘s nest. I was hooked .
Danny is right. At 17:05 he mentions Andy was bombing and you felt sorry for the guy. Thats what Andy was looking for. Your emotions, he had you.
That was amazing interview
amazing interview!
What an incredibly generous interview; given how much Kaufman screwed the cast and production crew of Taxi around so much. De Vito is one of the most considered and articulate actors around IMO.
Awesome interview! I love the movie!
Just saw the movie... Thanks Danny for this!
amazing interview
Such a great interview. Charlie Rose is a legend, along with the great Danny DeVito
talk about an inescapable grasp of poetry. this is why DeVito.
Danny is a brilliant storyteller- that’s not easy to captivate an audience- but for those who have a passion for what they’re sharing you feel the love, that genius and generous 🥰
Danny Devito, and Andy Kauffman were very great friends. The cast of Taxi was a perfect blend of actors who worked great together. Wish the show didn't end.
The movie is really special. well made and also crafted with a lot of love for Andy and his character. So many people involved in his life and career also involved with the movie, you could feel that it was more than your typical "pay sum a to make sum b" movie.
he was awesome as The Penguin and did a great job directing Matilda
This is such a great interview, can't wait for the brand new Netflix docu "Jim and Andy - The Great Beyond" coming out in a week!

Just watched and I loved it
great interview
amazing movie. amazing performances by everyone in it.
Wonderful interview
Again, amazing interview and DeVito went up another peg in my book, which is hard to do since he was already awesome before I saw this.
happy 75th birthday daniel michael devito !!!
DeVito is the best
I am a writer, and former producer/host of TV shows. As I watch Danny, I'm thinking that Danny as himself is a superb character...quieter, more nuanced. The film Man On The Moon is one of my favorites, and I think Carey's Tony Clifton is the funniest of all those created...including Kaufman's. Jim took the craziness to a bit higher level, where Andy's Clifton was a bit more subdued. But to get Clifton, you see, you have to go to the moon.

So Andy, did you hear about this one? Tell me, are you locked in the punch? Hey Andy, are you goofing on Elvis? "Hey, baby" Are you having fun? If you believed they put a man on the moon (Man on the moon) If you believed there's nothing up his sleeve Then nothing is cool
I really enjoyed this
World treasures, Danny and Andy!
