CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Superman (Henry Cavill) and Zod (Michael Shannon) fight to the death.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
As the planet of Krypton crumbles, General Zod (Michael Shannon) stages a coup as concerned leader Jor-El (Russell Crowe) and his wife send their infant son Kal-El to a distant world called Earth. While the young child travels through space with an object containing the DNA of his home planet, General Zod and his cohorts are sentenced to an eternity in a black-hole prison. Named Clark and raised by kindly farmers Jonathan (Kevin Costner) and Martha Kent (Diane Lane), young Kal-El lives in fear of what might happen should his neighbors learn about his extraterrestrial origins, eventually exploring the world in search of himself. In time, Clark's travels take him to a frozen tundra, where the American government has discovered an 18,000-year-old anomaly buried deep in the ice. Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane (Amy Adams) has just come to investigate when, after venturing out with her camera, she has a profound encounter with Clark. Convinced that his presence on Earth is proof of life on other planets, Lois finds her attempt to publish the story thwarted by her boss Perry White (Laurence Fishburne), who rejects it outright. Later, the airwaves are hijacked by General Zod, who threatens to obliterate the human race if they fail to hand over Kal-El within 24 hours. Forced to embrace his otherworldly origins for the first time in his life, Clark Kent dons the special suit from Krypton and prepares to take a stand against an enemy far more powerful than any he's ever known.

Superman kills ZOd, unless you are talking 1960s Superboy, which is goofy teen Clark Kent. And the theatrical cut of Superman II pretty much means that he killed Zod without his powers. I am not talking about the arctic police edit on TV, I am talking what you saw in theaters where he crushed his hand and threw him into the bottomless pit, and left him there if tossing him in that didn't kill him.

Oh god, that’s not the point. The movie is making clear that Zod is willfully putting people in danger for no reason. Zod is basically committing suicide by Superman. He’s daring Suoerman to kill him.

I think part of what makes it so gut-wrenching is that he doesn't just kill Zod. He kills the only remaining connection to his people, his world, his answers about who he is. They could have accomplished so much together. But Zod left him with no choice. When he snaps that neck he truly becomes the last of his kind, completely alone in the universe.

People also seem to forget Man of Steel is essentially another origin story. This fight with what are pretty much elite Kryptonian soldiers, is this Supes first fight with something and someone that can match and even overmatch his strength. The people saying "but Superman doesn't kill period" fail to understand how green this Superman is vs soldiers bent on turning Earth into a new home for themselves only; and he was not willing to let that happen. Hell this could be this Supermans reason to try and find another way instead of killing, he clearly felt what he had to do to Zod.

That's why I don't have a problem with Superman killing Zod. He literally had no choice. Many people said that those in the museum could have just run, or that Superman could have defeated him in a billion different ways. Then what? Zod would have found a way to escape, and he would have started his slaughter again. It's pretty simple, Clark could not left someone with all this power and lack of morality live. Yeah, that doesn't mean he had the right to kill Zod. No one has the right to take another one's life, no matter the reason. But sometimes, there is simply no other way.

You are right, if Superman was real he would likely be feared and hated by most people of the world, and only a small fraction would see him as a hero. But I think the movie gets hate because people don't want to see reality when it comes to Superman. They want a bright, happier hero and someone that contrasts Batman. I liked this movie, but I get why people didn't like it. Especially since all previous version of Superman, Smallville included, had him as a more well received hero by the public and brighter, more optimistic guy.

Superman was faced with a no-win situation, having to choose between the people of Earth and Krypton. Superman made the ultimate sacrifice for the only world he's ever called home, by having to regrettably kill not just a man, but a fellow Kryptonian and possibly the last of his own kind. The result makes him even feel more alone, but in the same way, also makes him more human; having to realize that he is imperfect and will not have the answer for the every challenge he faces. He becomes the stronger hero by accepting what he cannot solve in this world, as he seeks the answers for what he can.

There’s a difference between “cold-blooded killer” and “warrior.” A cold-blooded killer just straight-up kills people with no regrets. Just *crack* Welp, nighty night. There could be a reason, but there doesn’t have to be. A warrior kills when he sees no lasting alternative. I’ll give you the guy in the desert, but with Steppenwolf... the dude was about to politely swallow the world in weird Motherbox juice while monologuing in some kind of weird accent. He had to die. (Half-joking about the accent) I could very easily see the Injustice Superman come into this universe, though. Because this Superman does kill, albeit rarely. But he’s not a cold-blooded killer. He’s trying to protect the world with powers I’d bet even he doesn’t fully understand. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’d punched some terrorist meaning to incapacitate them and then just straight up caved in their chest cavity because he’s too dang strong.

I really like the direction the director went with this powerful scene. They didn't throw in a cheesy one liner or a untimly joke like the MCU might have. Instead, they had the score and the facial expressions tell the story. Clark didn't want to kill Zod and he wouldn't have if there was any way around it. He was not a killer by nature but he knew that if he didn't, the earth and the people he loved would perish. So after trying in vain to change Zod's mind, he did what had to be done. But just because he killed someone for a noble cause doesn't make it any less painful or outright crushing for him. That's why that scream was so impactful. It wasn't a scream of triumph or power, but of anguish and deep regret. My favorite part was 1:47. I just love the idea of this all- powerful being clinging to the woman he loved for support. Lois was one of the few people who understood and accepted him for who he was. The thought of losing her and his mother was his true weakness. So to see the powerful Superman cling to the mortal Lois in a moment of weakness and despair was a really touching scene in this movie (in my opinion)!

1:25 To me, this scene humanizes Superman in a way not many other medias are bold enough to show. Showing that he can't save everyone, that he won't always win, and that despite his insane power he values life and will do anything he can to protect it. And in this scene, upon realizing Zod was never going to stop, he had to make a difficult choice. One that, if we had to make it, would affect us for the rest of our lives. If this version of Superman was as bad as people say, he wouldn't feel the guilt and shame that he does after killing the only other person like him. But he does, and that's why he tries to avoid killing someone if he can. That's why he's willing to risk his life for us, because he's one of the few people who can and he'd rather it be him to carry that burden than anyone else. So that no one else will have to make that decision or grieve over a loved one dying from the hands of someone he can stop. That's the humanity of Kal-El, the last son of Krypton.

CruelestChris: Because as Zod said: "The foundation has to be built on something" he can't terraform any random planet, it needs to actually have an atmosphere and be able to support life on its own before they adjusted it for their needs. Zod and his cronies even went to other planets the Kryptonians previously terraformed and found them desolate. Without Krypton to regularly resupply the colonies, the planets reverted back to their original uninhabitable states. Earth supports life perfectly on its own so it suited their terraforming purposes. Moreover, even they had terraformed another planet, they would still want the codex in Kal's blood. With it, they could recreate and reestablish Kryptonian society in a matter decades rather than centuries if they did it the natural way. Kal, who was warned about Zod by his father probably would not give the codex to him even if arrived asking for it. So the conflict was going to happen one way or another.

  • @CruelestChris

    @CruelestChris

Syryu All they have to do is find a planet with an Earth-like atmosphere (and from what we know there's a lot of those), terrform it, then go tap Superman on the shoulder and say "hey, um, we're making a planet full of your people, we heard you have a Codex or something?" I mean not to mention there was no need to terraform Earth because Earth is already terraformed, and it takes all of a few minutes for a Kryptonian to adapt perfectly to our atmosphere. Plus our biosphere is a lot less stupid than theirs was.

It does not take minutes.

This scene alone could be the reason I think Henry is the best Superman to date, and why I actually like Man of Steel. Over the course of this fight, an inexperienced Superman has to fight the last of his own kind while failing to protect his home. The destruction in this scene is often criticized for making Supes seem careless, but the reality is that he either has the choice of continuing to fight to try and end his destruction sooner, or ignore him and save people, potentially letting him cause even more damage. Then, after zodd already proves that he doesn’t really need Superman’s powers to fight him, he removes his lifeline and conquers what took Clark his entire life in mere seconds. Zodd’s power was growing by the minute and would soon surpass Superman if he didn’t stop him soon. Then, when he finally has him pinned down, he tries to reason with him, one kryptonian to another, Superman still doesn’t want to kill this man because he knows that in Zodds eyes he’s just doing the right thing and that if he dies, Superman (as far as he knows) will be the very last of his kind. But Zodd won’t budge, he will never stop until either the human race is destroyed or Superman kills him. Clark has no choice, he either lets him live and risks zodd becoming too powerful to stop, or he puts an end to it now. And upon doing so, you can see the immediate remorse in Clark’s eyes, he’s just a humble farm boy and now he’s been forced to kill someone with his bare hands in front of a crowd. He is alone, a killer, and in the eyes of everyone he just saved, a menace that must be feared and stopped. People think Henry was too emotional of a Superman, but I’d argue that it’s the strongest part of his performance. The previous Supermen were comically naive and unshaken by human emotions, despite having the heaviest responsibility on the planet. Who do you save? Who do you leave behind? Who dies and who lives? Clark has to make these hefty choices every day and not because he wants to but because he is the only one who can, and in my opinion a person with that level of responsibility, especially one with a humble upbringing, can’t be emotionally stable all the time non stop. It has to come out at some point, and this scene is a better representation of that than any other scene in Superman films. Period.

People keep bitching about this scene when in the comics Post-Crisis Superman did the same thing, kill Zod and his minions, albeit with kryptonite, but killed nonetheless. Superman had no other choice, he knew and was told by Zod that the evil general would happily kill the people of Earth again if he had the chance, and the Phantom Zone clearly wasn't an option. Superman then found out that Zod's original punishment was death, and Superman carried out the sentence with remorse.

Michael Shannon gives the best comic book movie performance since Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight. He doesn't make Zod into some evil being, but a Greek tragic figure. All he was born to do was to preserve his species. You can tell from numerous scenes that he's not proud of what he's doing and shows genuine regret ("No matter how violent or cruel...") but that can't get in the way. At this point in the film, he has nothing to live for and desperately wants Superman to put an end to him. As for Superman, not only is he forced to take a life, but the life of a Kryptonian. The rest are banished to the Phantom Zone, making him and Zod the only ones on Earth. Superman basically ended the species, choosing the humans over his own species. This scene puts me to tears every time. And notice how his scream is shot the same way his scream for Jonathan Kent's death was. They're both huge moments where Superman feels he's failed.

  • @xyPERSON

All of that may be true but let's be real here. In the end, Michael Shannon's character Zod chose to be evil. It's no different than someone committing murder and then saying, "I didn't enjoy taking a human life but I did it anyway."

Superman killing has to be part of a larger arc, like Batman in The Dark Knight. The problem in this case is that it's his first movie, there's no reference to him being opposed to killing if he has to at any point earlier in the movie, and the fact that he killed Zod is never a plot point in any later movies. If Superman killing served the story in an important way, audiences would have accepted it. But it didn't. It served a single *scene.*

It isn’t an accurate film. Superman is a public personality as much as he is a superhero which is what his characterization is centered on. He embodies peace, hope, truth, and justice - these usually go with a smile :)

I was listening to some podcasts talking about this movie and one of them said, to paraphrase, “Being a hero is more then just flowery speeches and high ideals. Sometimes it’s about dirty work and doing what is necessary.”

I think he made the right choice. I mean sure Superman could’ve flown him away but that’s not that problem at hand. Zod already told him, he said “never”. Zod would of never stopped until he killed everyone he loved so I think putting down this enemy was the best choice in this scenario.

People says this Superman is a cold blooded killer fo murdering Zod. Dude, HE HAD NO OPTION! It was not about that family in the museum, it was about all the other families in the world. Every child, woman and man on the Earth would never be safe as long as Zod lived. And even knowing that, even knowing that in the big scheme of things he did the right thing, Superman still screams because he knows that he had no right to take another one's life.

I can't believe how many people try to tell me Zod's death was an unnecessary one and that it was out of character for Clark to kill him! Clark gave Zod warning after warning, trying to get him to stop, but he clearly wasn't going to and the Man of Steel had to kill Zod in order to save the innocent family (including two children!) Zod was going to murder! And it's not like Clark killed Zod without a thought. He clearly was disturbed, sad, and angry as the realization that he just killed someone sinks in! That scream of anguish is great!

The only problem this movie had is that it was ahead of its time. When this film came out everyone was already exposed to the kid friendly marvel films where there’s always a way out and no real weight to their fights. Look at the New York battle in avengers not even a hundred people died or were injured lmao that’s completely unrealistic and just shows that marvel doesn’t want any seriousness to them. They just slap handcuffs on Loki and it’s over lol and the funny thing is people wanted the same thing to happen to zod as if zod isn’t some all powerful alien who just destroyed skyscrapers. Imo dc handled this perfectly fine they actually gave Superman an ultimatum either let people die or finish off zod and people still have the nerve to say Superman is a killer that doesn’t care about anyone lol the entire point of this scene is him choosing humanity over krypton.

It could be that but it was also a more brutal take on superman. He shown to be a powerful alien that can destroy the world in a dark sense. Usually he’s portrayed as kind, soft and gentle.

"ahead of its time" no. Not it was not. The problem with this movie is that it was written by people who clearly do not get Superman. They didn't understand Superman and they clearly didn't WANT to try and understand Superman.

@@tylerleach8796 his origin and relationships w characters like Lois and his mom or jor el were pretty spot on but I’d be lying if I said it was perfect. Snyder could’ve made his Superman more lighthearted but I still think this film was ahead of its time, I mean cmon some of the themes and visuals were amazing compared to stuff that had came out at the time.
