Cemetery music: 'Hymn To The Dawn' by Scott Buckley
Best-known as one of the singers of the renowned '60s psychedelic pop outfit the Mamas & the Papas, Cass Elliot (or Mama Cass), was born Ellen Naomi Cohen on September 19, 1941, in Baltimore, MD, but grew up in Washington, D.C. It was during her senior year in high school that Elliot began singing (as well as acting), relocating to New York City by the early '60s and eventually touring in a production of The Music Man. With the folk music movement sweeping the nation around this time, Elliot formed the Big Three with other members Tim Rose and James Hendricks, issuing a few underappreciated albums (Live at the Recording Studio, The Big 3). The group eventually metamorphosized into the Mugwumps after Rose was replaced by a few other members, including Denny Doherty, but with only an obscure single to show for their hard work, the Mugwumps were kaput by 1964. To make a long story short, Elliot and Doherty eventually teamed up with the husband/wife team of John and Michelle Phillips, forming the Mamas & the Papas by the mid-'60s. Although the group would only remain together for a few short years, their impact on the rock music world was great, resulting in such classic hit singles as "California Dreamin'," "Monday Monday," and "I Saw Her Again," among others.
Upon the group's breakup in 1968, Elliot launched a solo career, issuing such albums as 1968's Dream a Little Dream of Me, 1969's Bubble Gum, Lemonade, & Something for Mama and Make Your Own Kind of Music, 1970's Mama's Big Ones, 1971's Dave Mason & Cass Elliot, 1972's The Road Is No Place for a Lady, and finally, 1973's Don't Call Me Mama Anymore. In addition, Elliot hosted two prime time TV specials of her own in 1969 and 1973, and appeared on numerous TV shows in the early '70s (including co-hosting The Tonight Show, as well as programs by Mike Douglas, Johnny Cash, Ed Sullivan, Carol Burnett, Tom Jones, and Red Skelton). But tragedy struck on July 29, 1974, as Elliot died from a heart attack in London during a sold-out, two-week engagement at the London Palladium. But Elliot's contributions to rock music didn't go unnoticed as the Mamas & the Papas were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 (with Elliot's only child, Owen, accepting the award at the ceremony for her late mother).
Elliot's body was cremated at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. Her ashes were later buried in Mount Sinai Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles.

Cass Elliot was a true legend! Her voice was amazing and very distinct. Her ability to harmonize during her days with the Mama's and the Papa's really showed her talent. I'm certainly glad that she found fulfillment as a solo artist in the last days of her career. I often wonder how her daughter, Owen, whom she loved so dearly is doing. Cass Elliot is one of my favorite vocalists. Don't worry about Beverly DeAngelo living in Cass’ former home. She actually did an episode with Kim Russo, who is a well-known medium, and talked about the fact that she's very comfortable living with Cass in Spirit. She must have loved that house, in particular, to return there in Spirit. I remember watching a film of The Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, and Cass Elliot was seated front and center when a young, new, artist took the stage and sang before the crowd with her band for the first time. The artist was Janis Joplin, and Cass Elliot was quite impressed. You can see her mouth the words “Oh My God...”. It has always stuck with me as Janis is another one of my favorite artists. Both are gone too soon. Rest In Peace, Cass Elliot

The house you were standing outside of at 2774 Woodrow Wilson was owned by Abigail Folger. She lived there with her boyfriend Voytek Frykowski when they were murdered with Sharon Tate and Jay Sebring by Manson's killers in August of 1969. Roman Polanski had asked his childhood friend Voytek if they would stay with Sharon while he was in London for a few weeks because she was pregnant and didn't want her to stay there alone. So they moved into the Cielo Dr. house for what they thought would be a few weeks until Roman came back from London. The rest is an unfortunate chapter in history. I grew up in LA and I loved going to places all around Hollywood and the westside where famous people lived, died and murdered. I've been fascinated with all this stuff since my grandmother used to tell me stories about her Rudolph Valentino stories and the silent era when she was in her 20's back in the 20's here in LA. If you need any suggestions for more stories, hit me up, I know a ton of them and where they all happened.

What a Legend! What a voice! They don't make em like her anymore. Her music will live on for eternity. I saw the interview with her daughter. She said her Mom wouldn't tell her who her Dad was. One of the other Band members told her years later and she went and met him and said he was a complete disappointment and she never saw him again. She said Cass's producer made up the ham sandwich because he didn't want people to think ill of Cass because of her known drug use. It wasn't drugs that ultimately killed her but it contributed. Drugs some prescribed for weight loss, some illegal and yo yo dieting for many many years that put a severe strain on her heart and other organs and ultimately caused her heart attack and death. May she Rest in Eternal Peace!

Hi Scott, Hope you're well mate. Great video, Cass Elliot is without question one of the best female singer's to ever grab a mic. Dream a little dream of me is a true classic her voice is unreal on this song. So sad the way she passed. She passed in the same Room as Legendary Who drummer Keith Moon. The Mamas and the Papas were amazing. And Michelle Phillips was Beautiful. I always imagined Michelle to be with a man like my Namesake! JIM MORRISON. Stay safe Scott My Friend ✌ Liverpool UK 👌👍

Cass Elliot is one of my favorite singers ever!! I have one of her albums & I know the lyrics backwards & forwards. She never gets the respect she deserves because she was a heavier woman. People fear a confident, talented woman. They can't take that away from her. Her voice is pure magic & I'm sad she left this world far too early.

Here was a lady who left us way too soon. I was 16 when she passed and it was a shock. I always liked her sound. Wasn't she on a diet, but lost too much weight too quickly and it weakened her heart? Didn't she also live in Jayne Mansfield's former pink house for a time? Before Englebert Humperdinck? That was a sad, weird summer...Cass Elliot dying, the on-air suicide of Christine Chubbuck (which got national coverage) and then the resignation of Nixon. It all seemed surreal.

Very well done; very respectful. I, too, loved Cass Elliot. I was only 10 when she died, the day after we celebrated my mom’s birthday. I always had a warm feeling about her and I always got a bad feeling about John Phillips, both of which turned out pretty true. Very nice article about Cass in the New York Times, today, 5/9/24. Interviews with her daughter, who has written an upcoming biography about her mom, and a close friend, who explains where that ham sandwich business came from. If you’re a Cass Elliot fan, you’ll definitely want to read it!

God has a plan for all of us and while we feel robbed by Cass Elliot's untimely death, we still miss the bigger picture. I believe Cass Elliot would have become a massive musical presence throughout the 70s and into the 80s. Big hits in movie soundtracks, a Broadway musical of her life, perhaps even becoming a classic rock and roller. She had the musical 'chops' and a powerful voice akin to Janis Joplin. Great video Scott.
