I believe the Emperor knows how to win (kill Horus) but he is searching for an alternate way of ending this madness that has befallen his imperium and sons, some strategic way to trap them and make them see reason or maybe purify them somehow. That's why he held back on the Vengeful Spirit, he was hoping until the last second that he would save Horus without having to destroy him.

But they are human after all, i am one of the ones who chose to believe the Primarchs and The Emperor do have a very human side, for all their godlike powers and abilities, at the end of the day, they still feel grief, disappointment, regret, and so on. So just imagine the thoughts and feelings going trough their heads when confronting Horus, the one who was meant to lead everybody, imagine the pain that The Emperor must have felt when he saw Horus twisted and manipulated by chaos, the same with Russ, to see his greatest brother fall so low, i think they were heartbroken before anything else, however stupid that must sound, they were unsure of what to do. Would you have faired better? Would i? I honestly can't say.

Absolutely, I completely agree. I've always viewed most of the Primarchs and the Emperor as human to varying degrees. For those most prone to compassion and empathy it would've been heartbreaking and demoralizing. I'm a sentimental sap, I can honestly say I would've done the same damn thing

Other than fighting the thousand sons and a little spine injury to Magnus, nowhere in the lore is Russ depicted as a ruthless, no mercy , bloodthirsty berserker. He tried to help Angron, he forgave the Khan for abandoning him, he didn't kill The Lion when they had their little drama, so.. all the evidence suggests Russ cared about his brothers.

Maybe the Emperor does know what will happen, and knows the 3 possible fates shown to the twins by the cabal in the book "legion." There are even hints in "mechanicum" that he knows the strict path, and sliver of hope for humanity in the long game, and he just doesn't want Malcador to know the fate of the emperor before Malcador's inevitable duty.

Yeah....that would fit with the Emperor. Keeping things, even from Malcador so that he stays strong. I wonder if the Emperor knew Sanguinius would die and I wonder if Sanguinius knew the Emperor would die. Imagine them both just knowing everything and realizing that they had no choice, neither of them, if mankind was to survive.

Uncle Malcador is by far the best written character In black library. What and absolute bad ass.

You're so very correct, Rho. These interactions are wildly entertaining in a very subtle way. Truly some of the best of the entire Heresy. So often was Malcador an enigmatic father figure to the Primarchs. It's quite a trip when his roll is flipped when he speaks in confidence with the Emperor. The gravitas of the exchange(s) settles heavily on the mind and heart of the reader. Cheers, Wolf Lord 💜

Looks like audible is the only way anyone can access them (I'm not paying £50 for a single book less than 100 yrs old) I would like a physical book I can read in my bed. The words and pages don't get messed up and flipped because my finger accidently touched a part of the page. And a physical book doesn't have batteries that can run out. It's the only series of books I've ever known where the publisher refuses to reprint a popular book But I have noticed there's a Custodes book getting reprinted around Spetember, so I have hope for the rest

So can the Chaos gods my man, so too, can they; and which is it that's the more likely to finally get hold of your soul before your end, hmm? LoL. I dig 40K so damn much, the depth of it's lore is so vast, & simultaneously so very intricately crafted... and still continues to be crafted even now. I cannot wait for the entirety of the Horus Heresy's ultimate resolution... I want to know who all comes back from their supposed deaths, or the warp; and who does not. But the biggest question I have is; will the Emperor of Mankind wind up becoming a Deity, despite his intentions... or is he already one... so interesting.

Russ DID, but couldn't bring himself to finish off his hrother. It was hesitation and compassion that lead to Lemans failure, not a lack of skill or power. Had Russ been just a bit less sentimental, he would've killed Horus

Together yes solo no that was the problem and why sangunious died. If he fought Horus with the emperor they would of both walked away

@@emerson21962 Russ was being played, Horus was in control of that whole duel trying to use his brother love to sway him. Horus could have baught his entire power to bare but he didnt. Sanguinis was still stronger, and even though he was tired it wasn't even a contest between them, Horus had to unleash his full power and off him quickly before the emperor showed up

I hit that like button from orbit.

Is it possible that Russ is in fact searching for Malcador? and the vision he recieved was that 'old bastard' telling him is locked somewhere in the warp preventing him to come back or his soul is hidden to prevent the Chaos Gods to find it? Thx Jarl for the vid and good work as always.

I've loved Malcadore in the HH series, especially Jonathan Keeble's voice for him. The conversation between he and Russ whilst playing Hneftafl in the garden in Wolfsbane, and the confrontation with Horus are some of my favourite 40K book moments.

Malcador is just one of the greatest characters! I would love a novel series delving deeper into his history. The imperium needs a Malcador again!

This has to be my favourite video of yours so far! Revelation is so well written that everytime I listen to him answer a question, another 5 questions spring from his answers.

So it would seem the Emperor cared about Mortarion aswell as Horus, by showing sadness at the fall of the Death Guard, interesting when we try to consider the 9 primarchs that were supposed to stay loyal in the devised plan. I imagine the list would be something like this based on comments from the Emperor and Malcador:: Horus Leman Russ Magnus The Red Mortarion Rogal Dorn Lion El Johnson Alpharius (Omegon) Fulgrim Vulcan

Ahmad Zubair But together, the emperor, Magnus and Malcador could have repaired the gate, they could have sealed the rifts in the web way, and kept the demons out. Magnus had the potential to almost approach the emperor in power one day (in my opinion) he was designed to sit on the throne after all and power the webway and Astronomicon , something which Malcador could only do for a few hours before utterly disintegrating. If Magnus had not been betrayed by Horus, he would have been an invaluable asset in ending the heresy. Horus knew that, that’s why he sent Russ to kill him. Magnus and the emperor knew more about the empyrean than anyone else in humanity. Magnus was never really swayed by the chaos gods, he was tricked by them yes, but not swayed, we saw as much when Lorgar repeatedly tried to convert him. Magnus is really a power unto his own right in many ways. He is still a wild card in my opinion.

The Board is Set is one of my favorite short stories. So good.

Probably the saddest moment in the lore. They say goodbye to each other indirectly...but with such directness and honesty.

The most terrifying quote ever was when the Emperor said when asked what was his next move. he said I don't know.

malcador is also one of my favorite charcters. I like to think that it's malcador's geneseed that's in the grey knights instead of the emperor's, which his geneseed is in the custodians

The emperor in private is basically the same demeanor as the Primarch of the space wolves when expressing his sense of humor.

This is by far the best story Ive ever heard!

Talon of Horus, the avatar of the astonomican called itself revelation, potentially a part of the emperor's psyche that gained a bit of self agency through the golden thrones power, the black legion killed it. Sadly.

I have loved this story since I first read it, it's just amazing.

Kinda reminds me of the short story Weregeld in the book Corax. There is a Raven Guard lieutenant of the Raptors company named Navar Hef, I wont say what he did but ended up admitting to Corax that he did something he shouldn't of done because he was afraid. It's the first time I ever read of a space marine admitting that he was afraid, granted he was suffering from tainted gene seed and slowly going crazy but still pretty interesting.

Cliffhanger of the year award goooooeeeessss to Wolf Lord Rho

Ok, so let me formulate a theory based on this little snippet. The Emperor uses cards to predict the future and formulate strategy. He also uses cards to communicate with Malcador (and possibly others) and give instructions. Now in the modern Imperium people use the Imperial Tarot to predict the future and help formulate strategy. So was the Emperor able to tap into people using the modern Imperial tarot and so gain fresh insight into Chaos and the wider galaxy and so build up to the plan he would eventually give to Guilliman? Just a thought, apologies if this idea has been covered already.

Anything with Malcador is great, he would be my pick to return. More interesting then any of the other

Good stuff. I think the Emperor's know that he will have to sacrifice Malcador for some time. Which is why he stops their games short of the end. But more than that in Master of Mankind the Emperor tells Diocletian he didn't know how it will end; and admitted even he might die. He goes so far to say that the Ruinous Powers will never stop; and someone else will simply take Horus's place. Foreshadowing Abaddon though even the Emperor admitted he didn't know who would follow after Horus.

Malcador- my favorite character from this universe since I first learned of him. He’s such a mystery, such a wonder- such a fucking hero. I just really need to know what’s up with his neck gear. I love the Sigillite.

The Emperor's plan is to appear to have no plan, he doesn't tell Malchador or anyone, as to speak the plan is to place it into the universe, thus within Chaos's reach - time isn't a line to them and futures can be influenced if things are known - so the only way to fool Chaos and Horus into taking the fight he know's he can win, is tricking Horus into thinking he can win.

I was under the impression that the Emperor only engineered Alpharius and that the Alpha Legion Primarch was split into two during his transit through the warp after the gods had stolen him away, leaving the Emperor unaware that there were two. But this story seems to indicate that the Emperor did know.

Love and hate you in equal measure for that cliffhanger Wolf Lord..! Amazing video, I can't imagine how it must of felt for Malcador to see the man he thought infallible not know what to do next, always enraptured when we see The Emperor show flickers of humanity..

I'm fairly new to 40k this story is awesome

Malcador and Constantine Valdor out their somewhere doing the emperors private work. That could be a very interesting idea. They have kept things from everyone before.

My dream would be to have a book on the early days of the reunification if terra, a more detailed retconned story of the emperor and malcaldor and their true stories and origins and how they met.... Maybe one day, but its almost better as mystery
