You mean like a giant 3-D printer loaded with everything you'd need? Makes sense to me, and not really a macguffin. US Navy ships have metal printers on them for making parts, no secret there. The space station can manufacture some tools using printers. Why, when you send humanity into the depths of space, wouldn't you give them basically a very powerful 3-D printer with everything you may need in a database?
