Malaysian Food Is Underrated! - 3 Day Food Journey in Kuala Lumpur 🇲🇾

Malaysian food is awesome! On one of my first visits, I asked some locals for advice on things to do. They looked at each other for a second, then simultaneously said 1 word - "EAT!".
Since then.. I've probably been to the country 10+ times. On each of those visits, I took their advice and tried a variety of dishes.
My personal favourite is called Nasi Kandar - which is essentially an assortment of rice, meat and curries.
Malaysia has a high population of Indians and Chinese people, and those cultures have influenced the cuisine.
Having visited (and lived in) several countries throughout Southeast Asia, including..
Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines and Singapore..
.. I can without hesitation, say that I think Malaysia has the best food.
Follow along in this video as myself and my GF visit some of my favourite restaurants in Kuala Lumpur.

At the banana leaf restaurant, when the guy came over with the 3 curries, you're suppose to use that curry to mix into your rice.... (It's included in the meal! some place even have crab curry) You should also ask for deep fried bittergourd- it's not bitter at all and it goes soooo well with the rice!

  • @saf6996

13:50 the server was asking if you want some more curries, typically poured onto the rice. Theres a few options for the curries (chicken, fish, dhal). For a serving of banana leaf, the curries are pretty much not to be missed

As for Laksa, finding a really good one in KL is rather hard as you need to drive a bit to the suburbs. However, theres is a chain that serves a pretty good one, called Ah Cheng Laksa. The chain is mostly found in malls.

There's no curfew for kids when it comes to school holidays in Malaysia 🤣 Oh my you're missing a lot and just scratch the surface lol Most food you've eaten were Indian food, except for Nasi Lemak, but there's a whole range of Malay traditional dishes that you haven't try yet like masak lemak, asam pedas, masak merah, singgang, ikan bakar, masak hitam/opor, gulai tempoyak, gulai asam, gulai kawah etc. We even have a lot other variety of soupy noodles like laksa, mee celup, mee hong kong, mee hailam,.mee bandung, mee racun, kuewteaw goreng kerang, mee kari, mee rebus etc. And rendang is best eaten with lontong dish (compressed cube rice, with vegetables in coconut milk, serunding and peanut sauce). By the way, we don't really rate Indian foods at 24hrs restaurant, we only rate the one from specific restaurant like Nasi Kandar or banana leaf dish at NZ Curry House 😄

I'm M'sian American and often miss the food. But when I'm back I don't find myself bingeing. After some I had to face the facts that the food is unhealthy. Too much oil, often recycled but not rancid, too much meat compared to the older more balanced with vegetables Asian diets, unlabeled genetically modified produce, excessive monosodium glutamate, chemical dyes and artificial colorings, sugar in the food and general cleanliness of the kitchens. The departments do shut down outlets but selectively also .

Underrated in the sense that when I look up terms such as "which countries have the best food?", I rarely see Malaysia in the top 15. I personally think it should ranked much higher. Also, a lot of the dishes haven't spread throughout the world like Thai, Indian, Mexican, Italian etc. food has. I have never seen a Nasi Kandar restaurant outside of Malaysia (unfortunately). I've also never seen Nasi Lemak meals being promoted in any other country. Not a single sign for it. I'd have to seek out a speciality Malaysian restaurant.

Malaysians don't really have that 'working-class' type of ppl that goes abroad, so that's why our foodie is underrated.. That' working- class' ppl will undoubtedly create a sub culture of foodies to their own community whilst 'promoting' to the 'locals'.. Bangladeshi, Thais, Vietnamese , Philippines, Pakistanis, Italians, Koreans etc are all well represented abroad due to various social and political 'pilgrimage' hence why their foodies becomes 'popular'! The Malays particularly don't really go out of the country as they are mostly comfortable with their socioeconomic status so much so they see no need to go elsewhere to promote their foodies..
