I won’t say I’m shocked, but I’ll admit I’m kinda surprised how strong that unit is… very nice. Makita should have this in a combo kit with the mini blower.. I’m jealous

Yay, 40v chainsaw and really good improvement... probably my 2nd 40v after the vacuum .

I LIKE the big saw features on this electric model. One battery at 100 cuts on 4-inch wood would keep me working on 6-8-inch campfire wood for a morning. I'd take this 40-volt model into the woods because it doesn't stall as easily as less powerful models.

Thanks for the review. Just FYI they have anti kickback chains that are designed not to be able to plunge cut. You seemed to be able to defy that.

Agree. You CAN file the rakers a bit lower to help, but it will take a deft touch to run it normally and not overload/stall the saw.

I have the 18X2 top handle saw the XCU08 and I think it's very close to the 40v top handle saw performance wise, atleast alot closer than the 18v top handle and the 18x2 rear handle saw you compared it to here from what I can see. Thanks

@@FPVmarko don't think so on either of your points. This one is 24ms and the 2x18v is 20ms and 500g heavier. The boost mode increases torque rather than speed. Torque is more important than rpm anyway with chainsaws. You'll get a faster cut with more torque and less bog.

Looks like the 40v is getting pretty capable of lite chainsaw carpentry and small diameter firewood making provided multiple batteries are available.

p.s, if you want to do a video on the 36v chainsaw vs the 40v, dm me and maybe i can send you mine (assuming i get it back). i need to wait for the 40v to go on sale here (oz) first though i use it daily for work. big downside on the 36v (as i’ve found in the recent weeks rain here) is that water wicks in to the battery compartment and shuts down the saw. it’s happening daily at the moment.

Curious how much of a power difference there is between the 2.5 and 5 amp batteries. This is probably the highest draw 40v tool out, so I would expect there would be a larger improvement using the 5ah than with other tools. I have the 18v x2 rear handle saw and this really seems like an improvement over that. The 18v cuts fast, infact faster than my 16 inch stihl, but it stalls too easily under load. Excited to see how the 40v rear handle performs.

@@leopoldlodewijkfilipsmaria8064 4a are better, because they are clearly run murata 21700 vtc6a cells which are providing unreachable high current performance. Theese would last long. If 2.5a/5a running vtc5a cells, there could be talks, if they are powered by vtc4/5 they would loose capacity soon.

Good test! 👍🏻 Learned a lot about the performance of the 40v model. What I can not understand, however, is the much too high contact pressure that brings all battery saws regularly in the stall. This incorrect operation only brings disadvantages...

@Tools & Stuff. Another great Makita review. You know you can't have enough tools. And besides, if your "friend" wants to borrow a chainsaw, you can lend him the LXT one you won't care if he burns out. I once lent a neighbor one of my hammer drill drivers. Came back with a burnt motor and a bent chuck. Hope you and your family stay safe and well.

That bar is ridiculously oversized for that chainsaw. I’m actually quite impressed by its power compared to the 18v single battery top handle.. thank you for this video. The only downfall is the concern I have for your use of these top handles. I’m actually a professional arborist and some of the things you were doing with that saw could be lethal. I’m so surprised you didn’t get kick back on some of those bore cuts!! Let alone the fact top handles should not be used on the ground. A lot of places (in the uk is all I know) will only sell these if you can prove you have all your licences! Anyway, take care. Thanks

These makita battery chainsaws have antikickback chains, and other built in protections which make them stall before they will kickback. I have never in my 25 years of using chainsaws had a violent kickback, and never anything close on a cordless chainsaw. Thank you for your comment.

I have the 2 18v saw and got DUC306 over Christmas looks to be very similar to 40v . It’s a nice saw better then the duc400z . The duc306 also use up batteries much quicker. I use the small 18v for limbing before the chipper and it’s great for that. Thanks video 👍

For camping, offroading and other "better having than needing"-situations the 18V-version (DUC254) has one big advantage: With the blade demontated, it fits perfectly in a Makpac size 3 - including savety-glasses, an extra chain, a chain maintaining kit, oil rags and more than a liter of oil stored in small containers (I use old baby-milk-bottles to store the oil).

when the 40 v gets that hot put it on the charger and if it was like the 18 v it will run the fan first to see how long it takes before it will allow it to be changed

It’s a bit counter intuitive to put such a hot battery on the charger. But if the charger indeed first check temperature and then cool it down, awesome! What is the charger with lcd? Is the DC40RA charger also that smart?

Comes from old electric streetcar/subway technology. Electrification meant that a single operator could control a train (no fireman or brakeman needed). However, if the operator should be incapacitated, there had to be way to safely come to a stop.

thanks for the review. i’m pretty keen to get this. i have the 36v version and it’s a great little saw. the 40v seems to be about 20% faster chain speed (36v is 20ms). that puts it up there with the husqvarna t540i xp battery saw which is the current benchmark for electric arborist climbing saws. just to point out, a rear handled saw is always going to cut faster than a top handle saw (even if the motor specs are identical) simply due to the way it’s held and the way you cut with it.

Seems to me that the 36v cuts the best when not forced and the 18v, well, is 18v and I own one of those so I kinda knew what to expect. The waterfall in the beginning of you video looks a lot like a place called "Rainbow Falls".

What happens then put on a shorter bar? As an arborist/treefeller I change lengt almost daily depend on treesize.

I have a Stihl 161T with a 30cm bar, my brother have a Makita top handle I not remember the model but in regard to power seems about same my Stihl, we test both together at the end we bouth agree the Stihl feels better in particular standing up on the three, Makita kind feels more bulkier.

Waiting for 80V chainsaw, my money are ready.

My 2x18 Makita rear handle is pretty impressive. Only issue is the stock bar is too long, and bogs it down. Like the 2x platform, and have a few. Perfect complement to all my hand tools, and my top handle 18v saw when using both together, then can have a gasser on standby for the big stuff. Guessing another beni is the 2x cool down quicker being separate. I think a 2x 40 would be sweet, but not much runs off that high voltage, and not sure the benefit at that point. I had 56 volt Ecco stuff for a bit, and power was ok, but the batts always shorted. I think Makita nailed it on the 2x.

Totally agree with the 18v stall issue....so infuriating. Definitely not for in tree use, can't imagine being in a canopy and getting half way through a cut and having it cut out, could be very dangerous

once you learn how to use it properly and let the saw do the cutting, it's surprisingly capable. pushing it too hard causes it to overheat. The stalling causes it to overheat. There's nothing you can do about overheating except wait for it to cool down. I love it for pruning small stuff around my yard. Have not taken it up in a tree yet, but wouldn't hesitate to do so, even though it would be better to have a bigger saw for many in tree jobs.

Maybe a stupid question but I ask anyway... Why do they say it's 40V machine when it's actually 36V? I haven't heard an explanation for that yet (I found this channel today so I only have watched around 20 videos so far) Greetings from Sweden!👍🥳👍

These batteries charge up to 42v. They could have called them 42v Max :)

The price is a no go for me. I would go with the 36v and save $200. Let the saw do the work and it won't stall.

The rear handle 40v will likely be enough for most people.

Exactly. Most people don't. Who puts on chaps in 30°C weather to trim a few branches in thier garden? I'm guessing less than 5%. Probably less than 1% actually.

i wondering if you have any info on the new telescopic pole pruner and whether makita will be releasing a hedging version too??? if so will it be a changeable head (like the ego commercial pole pruner/hedger) or fixed. trying to decide what to buy and i’d like the makita but it’s a gamble at the moment. i’d rather not have to have 2 very similar $1000 tools.

So in NZ these come with 90px chains like the (2x)18V models and not the 25AP or 80TXL chains mentioned in the Japanese adds / website, interesting. At least makes it a more fair test 🙂 Interesting also to see the XGT is harder to stall even with just the 2.5Ah battery on there. Looking forward to see what the rear handle XGT model will be capable of. But mostly just really curious what kind of beast they will be able to bring on 2x40V. Especially seeing that these 40V models really already seem to be a step up in grunt from the 2x18V models. Thanks for the review!

not know for 6ah, but with 2x 5ah, i would you can do around 20 min heavy use netto (so kind of standard on this tools), but it really depends, what kind of wood it is, how sharp is your chain etc.

Nicely done comparison. Safe to say that the 18V saw is not worth buying anymore. And this video would have been 3minutes shorter if the 18V had been omitted from the 4x4 cut test!!!

Can't wait for the twin 1040v max in 30 years... Where does it end?

Seeing as the 40v beats the 18v x2, reckon it would go okay with a 400m bar on it, for taking down larger trees?

Put the 18v bar and chain on the 40v it will cut so much better

Makita don't make an 18v battery with 21700 cells.

Curious to know if the shorter bar/chain on the 18v saw will interchange with the longer bar/chain on the 40v?could be best of both worlds with using shorter bar for tree topping/ trimming and longer bar for ground work and bigger cuts...

Yes there are 3 models , I’ve seen them on KZread.. they are twin battery , not sure if they are mains . No doubt makita will release a adapter.

try it. for me, not have to deal with gasoline, fumes, noise, smell in the car etc is is very nice for some general cutting around the house or even some bigger tree here and there. just need to have sharp chain and at least 2 set of batteries. for some serious logging you need proper heavy duty tools anyway, you gas powered 30cc wont do it.

Can't get that baby in the UK yet. Or I haven't found one yet. Doing that without safety gear gives me chills..

Meanwhile, I look at my DUC302 and ask myself why I bought a saw with such an uncomfortable handle

When you're plunge cutting there are more teeth engaged so more torque.

You cannot plunge cut with some chains! I have had VERY sharp brand new chains that would burn rather than plunge cut!

Do you have any idea if I were to buy the 12" version of the top handle saw, if I could replace the bar with a 14, or 16" bar and a longer chain? Reason I ask is there is a promo at a store to get the saw, charger, 4AH battery at a discounted price AND an extra 4ah battery but the deal only applies to the 12" version.

I wonder what it will cut like on the 5ah with a bigger sprocket to give it a tad more chain speed or a slightly smaller sprocket for more torque. Im going to try it on my 40v top handle. Great review

that saw (40v) seems like it would be happier with .325" chain instead of 3/8. chain speed is pretty high with that 3/8" chain, and has more than enough RPMs to run the .325 at a respectable speed.

Would love to know if a longer blade/chain can be swapped to the 40v model???

As I see this little chainsaw works great with the 2.5Ah battery, but not the bigger chainsaw.

Excellent vid. Thanks. A question about run time and 2 x 18V vs 1 x 40V. I am considering DUC306 (2 x 18V) vs UC003G (1 x 40V). Both top handle, 300mm bar. Same price. The 40V is 30% lighter based on skin weight, and even more so with only one battery. But otherwise they are fairly comparable in design and listed chain speed. However, I wonder about total run time. Chopping eucalypts takes ages. Any idea how the 2 x 5Ah x 18V would compare to a 1 x 4Ah x 40V (these are the standard available bundles). My simple understanding is that the 2 x 18V should run more than twice as long because of the extra amp hours …? cheers

That's only one amp hour difference. 2 x 5Ah on the 36v = 36v 5Ah. So if you put an 8Ah 40v battery on, then you are getting an extra 3Ah on the 40v.

What you said about the 18v stalling more easily after stalling the first time happens to me with the 36v split shaft with the pole saw. It's incredibly frustrating!
