Making Your First Character - 2016 Version (Adobe Character Animator Tutorial)

(Note: This is an older video, so some parts may be outdated in the latest release: stapling has been replaced with auto-attaching, triggers have their own panel now, lip sync has a single editing track in the timeline, and more. See • Complete Animation Wor... for a more recent full workflow tutorial.)

It takes Photoshop and Illustrator files, and allows you to control them in realtime using your face and voice through a webcam. This in-depth tutorial shows a complete end-to-end workflow, from drawing the character all the way to a final export. You will need Character Animator Preview 4 or later to access the features shown here.

    Hey Dave, every time I export a character from Character Animator and try to bring it into After Effects, I get the error message 'Unable to execute script at line 25. Uncaught exception' and I can't bring in the character :( Do you know how I can get around this?

    I wanted to thank you for the awesome program and also for teaching me about it online. I've been watching your tutorials over the past week after having a hard time getting my head around animation (especially with the mouth). I tried apple motion but it's definitely not what it's made for and after effects just gave me headaches thinking about it. I love the simplicity of Adobe Character Animator and how after creating a character in Adobe Character Animator I can make him do so much and have him become so lifelike! I'm also excited about future features for walking (it might be cool to have some standard people animations too like jumping up and down and lifting up their arms, a fist pump, arsenio hall woot woot, type stuff)? Not sure how easy that would be, considering characters come in all different shapes and sizes. I wanted to share what I made yesterday with my character + a background movie I made to help people with Spanish. While the mouth isn't always as precise as I would like, I did my best to fix it in the noticeable places (on the sound "ah" like "mom" for example). I would love to get your opinion as I worked countless hours to achieve the final result! :-) Thanks and God bless. kzread.info/dash/bejne/pWp-xJJsg7C0gag.html

    Wow this is excellent! Thank you so much for sharing, love it - and learned a lot! We are working on better walking features and making the lip sync even better, so things should improve over time (we are still in an early preview phase). This is exactly the type of stuff that motivates me - people animating characters for the first time (and having fun with it)!

    This is an archived tutorial = e staple tool was replaced by auto-attach. See the "Getting Started" video on this channel, part 4, for how to attach things like arms (just drag the origin over top of something). You should also upgrade if possible - a LOT has been added since 2018, you're about 4 versions behind.

    Overall nice video. BUT you assume a level of knowledge about Illustrator that not everyone has. I can follow along because I know Illustrator but you gloss over things (duplicating to make shadows, etc.) that not everyone would know. Either 1) slow down and explain further some important steps or 2) warn viewers upfront that you assume a level of knowledge of Illustrator. I can follow this but colleagues of mine who are not as familiar with Illustrator became confused very quickly.

    Agreed, a basic knowledge of all the other apps mentioned here is needed (Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects, OBS, etc.) - there's not enough time to go into much depth with them. Next week we'll have a step-by-step beginner tutorial in Photoshop that should be easier for newcomers to follow.

    Excellent. That will help them a lot. I will let them know. I've been playing around with Character Animator and my mind is already filled with ideas of how to use it. I am curious - any reason why you selected Photoshop or Illustrator for the beginner tutorial? I use both but tend to use Photoshop more. I'm just curious if there is a reason for your choice lol.

    Photoshop is a little easier to understand, I think - Illustrator can get more complex with how it uses grouping, sublayers, isolation mode, etc. Statistically though, they're almost 50/50 for what people use in CH.

    Character Animator 4 is a huge step foreward! Very happy about all the changes :-) I was thinking about testing Animate CC, but now - not sure anymore... What I really appreciate is that you offer 'example puppets'! It's a huge help for me! And very happy it's made in AI :-) thank you very much!

    I have one more question. I want to use my iphone as a webcam(with a program which connects your phone camera wireless) in character animation, because my webcam is not the best actually, but the character animator says that only one camera detected. Do you know any solution for my problem?

    Hmmm, haven't tried that yet. Officially we only support standard webcam setups: forums.adobe.com/thread/1869401

    Hello again! So I have decided to create head turns for my puppet and I have named every layer and group according to the tutorial, I have also made sure everything was tagged correctly in Character Animator but when I go to the scene there is something weird happening. Basically it looks like if there was some kind of magnet and when I move the centre of the face drags to one direction. I can not really explain, you would perfectly know with a photo. I have tried everything but it seems not to change. Please help and thank you very much.

    I have a few problems: 1. I can't see the tag section 2. I made some shadows on my character as you do but when I open in charcter animator the program makes it black, so it doesn't have the shadow efect, can you give me advices?

  • @okaysamurai

    @okaysamurai

    7 жыл бұрын

    1. If you're not seeing tags, you need to update After Effects to get the latest version (Preview 4). 2. Try renaming the shadow layer to something like shadow instead of the default - that sometimes works. Also make sure "Render as Image" is checked in the puppet properties on the right if it's an Illustrator file.
