I am a former software engineer working in a PM role for a development team for a AAA. We put in tons of effort. I have never seen a group of people that puts in more good hours of work in a week in my life. The problem is the expectations have gotten insane. My first project was debugging race conditions due to threading issues caused from using a different device. The N64 was single core. We are talking a completely different generation of coding. The complexity difference is on the order of thousands to millions, and that is legitimately not BS. The javascript for our default website is over 70 different files of code. We load different versions of the page for some different browsers, browser version and device type. And almost all of these pages are adaptive too. If you want to update one thing you are stuck editing like 30+ files. The overhead burden for "AAA" products has just gotten insane. You can't just lock 10-30 people in a room and create a AAA banger anymore. Smaller teams have success when by creating games with original concepts, not by having top tier production quality.

Which is why they used to just be called quake clones or doom clones. CoD wishes it had Golden Eye's legacy. Fourty fucking titles in and CoD still hasnt done a single thing to innovate, while Golden Eye got it right in one go before CoD even existed.

Apparently the developers who made the game were a bunch of friends, some still in college, who took the financial risk buying the rights for a 007 game. Rare and Nintendo granted them a development window provided they could showcase a working demo- and then told them "by the way, make sure it's 3D." One of the BIOLOGY ENGINEERS ended up doing most of the coding through many hours of trial and error (He has no experience with 3D game design whatsoever) everything that made it into the game was the result of throwing ideas at a wall and seeing what would stick. Imagine learning how to use a brand new prototype workstation, and making a licensed retail videogame at the same time.) They used their own faces for all the minor characters, and the multiplayer mode was a complete afterthought that the coder made as a goof, but then Nintendo saw it and basically gave them all the money and time they needed after that.

@@americancapitalist9094Hollywood was always a propaganda machine even from the start. Gaming was a niche thing that catered to nerds and higher IQ people. When the corporations saw how much money there was to extract from the normies, then corporations started making more simplistic games and focusing on marketing to those people. This is why we see games become easier and more simplistic compared to the originals. The only things that improve now are graphics and even the pace of that has greatly slowed down.
