Making Pawpaw Ice Cream: Easy Step-by-Step Master Recipe
Call me crazy, but sometimes ice cream is called for when it’s icy, cold outside. Join me in the kitchen as we make pawpaw ice cream.
Freezers are magic! Preserving the seasons, for me as a forager, is so important. But it’s also important to eat that bounty!
If you are a forager and have a freezer, it's probably filled with all sorts of goodies from the growing season. Why not bring some of that beauty out right now. And if you have frozen fruit, try making this ice cream with me. This is a master recipe, so you can adapt it to your ingredients at hand and to your dietary needs. Today I make a dairy free version.
Pawpaw is an amazing fruit with a “tropical” flavor that we get to harvest here in NY. If you haven’t seen our other pawpaw videos please check them out too!

or for those of us off grid,no power or don't have an ice cream maker, just put the covered bowl outside on the icy snow, whisk every half hour so it doesn't form ice crystals, until it's frozen.

If using chicken eggs would you use three to equal the duck eggs? I'm allergic to duck eggs. Also I don't have an ice cream maker and won't be getting one. If you put the custard into ice trays (the old-fashioned kind with the separator that comes out is great), or stainless steel bowls into the freezer. You need to stir it every few hours. It makes more of a sherbet but still works okay.

Hello Phyllis, sure use 3 chicken eggs (2 will do too). Thanks for mentioning your technique w/out an ice cream maker. Enjoy!

Hello miss Falconi, I grow paw paw in The Netherlands and they are doing great, lots of fruit every year. Can I make this ice cream and refreeze it for later use or will it get solid? Best regards, Richard

Hello Richard, good to hear you are growing pawpaws in the Netherlands! You can make the ice cream and refreeze for later. But you can also just freeze the pawpaw pulp; see our video here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/d4JhrMiHltenmdY.html That is what I do and then make pawpaw ice cream throughout the year.
