Making Nidacore countertop on a boat transom

This is part of a series I did about fabricating structures with honeycomb core and fiberglass. Check out my other videos for more about using these materials to repair or add onto your boat. Making cardboard template, cutting core, fiberglass layup, tabbing (to assure bond), Attaching to other structures.
I finally get the generator doghouse on the boat !

    Thank you for taking the time out to make this video..👍👍 you really get into Professional Fiberglass skills.. Especially like how you build-up the corners with bondo then fibreglass,and start out with smallest strip medium sized strip and wide strip. I rebuilt a boat probably 25 years ago New stringers naw transom.. No KZread back then Trial-and-error...but Did learn to Put The resin And jell coat In the refrigerator To get a longer work time in Florida.. Thanks again For taking the time out great video...

    Thanks! I learned most of what I know about fiberglass from this boat. I started with small non-critical projects like the dinghy holders and gradually moved on to larger, more structural projects as I gained experience and confidence. The generator doghouse came after the dinghy holders, then finally the counter.

    Thanks. I still didn't know how much glass I needed. After chickening out and adding more core and glass layers to the counter supports, I just went with 5 layers on the countertop. You're right about heavy things banging on it in the future, so given the uncertainty about its strength and weight ahead of time, the 5 layers was the only decision that made sense. After seeing the result, I think I'd go with 3 layers if I had to do it again. For anything non-structural like closet walls or shelfs for your clothes, just one layer would be fine. To make stuff like that super-light, use just one layer of woven like I started the shelf supports with. At that point, they were surprisingly strong and amazingly light (like styrofoam kind of weight).

    Mate you need to totally remove the existing gelcoat prior to applying glass, you will get delaminating the way you are doing it. Sand back to the point you see glass then you can be sure you will get good bond. The gelcoat must be removed. Your work may hold your weight today but it will not last long before you start having issues. Good luck I wish you well I hope you take my critic in the good spirit is was intended.

    If you are going to use chopmat, it's best to put it first and the woven cloth last. It gives a better finish and also soaks up resin from the chopmat. So, it is easier to finish and it is lighter, albeit a little. Also, woven cloth is stronger by weight than chopmat as chopmat uses twice as much resin for the same weight of cloth. Chop mat is stiffer due to the use of twice as much resin, but ultimately weaker to break, again due to the extra resin.

    I'm in Merritt Island in case you want a beer or a hand with something. Your rebuild is much more extensive than mine. A clean slate sort of thing. I'd like to do one of those, but I guess I'm working my way up to it. Impressive how you just jumped in and did the total redesign for the interior. Love the creative templating with paint sticks, and the molded fiberglass sink is brilliant.

    Hello from Argentina! O have a question, This honeycomb board can be used for a "boat deck" that goes down the floor? Instead of wood, because its an old boat and the structure that hold the floor is made of wood and it's all rotten. Thanks! Good job in the video

  • @ninehundreddollarluxuryyac5958

    @ninehundreddollarluxuryyac5958

    5 жыл бұрын

    Its pretty easy to cut. A heavy razor knife works. The oscillating tool works with metal or wood blades. A table saw is useful for cutting a little notch in the edge to add quarter-round molding so glasscloth can go over the curved edge instead of a sharp right angle corner. A circular saw is good for plunge cuts and the straight part of door openings and such. A jigsaw (sabre saw) is good for curves. So basically try whatever you've got.

    I have several fin rollers and tried them a few times. You have to work them very slow and in the heat here in Florida I always feel that the resin will kick before I'm done. I suppose I could reduce the amount of hardener. What seems to work well for me here is to use the brush to remove any air from the laminate. I sort of stab the cloth with the bristles in a stippling motion and can get the air out. I wind up with a thicker, resin-rich laminate which isn't as strong as it would be if I pulled the excess resin out with the roller. Hopefully this will be good enough for me. Part of it is that I like to work fast, and feel anxiety when going so slow with the roller. I'm kind of learning as I go and finding that I can get the air out a lot faster with the brush, I went with that before I learned that the laminate is stronger when you squeeze out the extra resin. If any of this falls off the boat, I'll try going back to the roller.

    what final step you did to shining the surface top?

  • @ninehundreddollarluxuryyac5958

    @ninehundreddollarluxuryyac5958

    The countertop was sanded smooth. It took a long time to sand through the roughness created by rolling on so many layers of gelcoat after building up and sanding down just the high spots with 40 grit. (I built up thickness by rolling on five or six layers, sanding just the peaks off and then laying down another five or six layers) Once the surface was smoothed out with the 40 grit, it takes just a very light sanding with 100 grit, then 220, then 400 and finally 1200 grit sandpaper. By the time you do the 1200 grit it should begin to show a reflection. Then I used some polishing compound from Harbor freight which rubs on and off like paste wax. After a couple of rounds with the polishing compound, I did the same with a couple of coats of turtle wax paste wax. Thats all I did to get that shine. That rough vertical surface at the front of the counter is exactly the same gelcoat as the shiny horizontal surface on top. The only difference is that the vertical surface did not get the sanding, polishing and paste wax. It took a couple of days to build up enough thickness so I wouldn't sand through, then the sanding and polishing was all done in one more day. So the rough vertical surface was 2 days and the shiny horizontal surface took one more day.

    @@hackerghost2 I hope your project goes well. Be sure to document what you do on video and post it along with anything you learned while doing it. Information costs nothing to share and benefits everyone. The most difficult lesson for me was to build up enough thickness before trying to sand it smooth. I sanded through a lot at first. The trick was to build up many layers by rolling on gelcoat, then sand off only the tops of the ridges before applying a bunch more layers. This process got repeated several times until I was sure there was enough thickness to sand down without sanding through. You will probably sand through a few times when you are learning, as i did. Its very tempting to move on to the next step too soon because it seems like you are just repeating a step you'd like to think you're done with. If you sand through, consider it a learning experience, and go back to building up layers again. Remember that when you're building up, you don't want to sand it flat, just knock the tops off and lay in another half dozen layers before knocking the tops off again. Repeat the build up and knock down several times before attempting to sand it smooth.

    @@ninehundreddollarluxuryyac5958 what type of last layer of fiberglass to get it smoother? Chopped stranded matt or fabric?

  • @ninehundreddollarluxuryyac5958

    @ninehundreddollarluxuryyac5958

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@hackerghost2 It helps if the last layer is chopped strand mat. That seems to leave a smoother surface to start with. You can save a lot of time by smoothing on several layers of fairing compound. Smooth in a layer, sand just the peaks off, then smooth on another layer going at 90 degrees from the first. Always wipe down with acetone after sanding so the next layer adheres as strongly as possible to the previous layer. There will always be little ridges or valleys in each layer, so multiple layers going in different directions helps to smooth it in. Each layer of fairing compound lets you build up thicker than ten layers of gelcoat, so it saves a lot of time. After building up enough thickness, try to sand the fairing compound perfectly smooth. I usually discovered that it wasn't perfect after rolling on my first layer of gelcoat. (for some reason, the gelcoat shows the imperfections better than the fairing compound) If this happens, go back a step and smooth in more fairing compound because it will take a ton of layers of gelcoat to fix what could be filled in with another two or three layers of fairing compound. Fairing compound is made to sand much easier than gelcoat, and goes on much thicker too. Check out the two videos about making the generator doghouse for more info on building up and sanding down.
