    This is s a perfect instructional video on how not to repair below the water line hull punctures. Wrong type of resin, wrong type of glass, didn’t repair the stringer from the top, didn’t grind back the glass around the puncture to the right degree and then use corresponding glass levels etc etc, could go on forever.

    If it dints IE no memory to it.! There will always be a cavity....! Water will sit and rot around it. Basically if you jump into your boat and the foam under the 3 layers of glass the fibreglass is just a structure strength in many directions. No memory IE cavities delamination...! Water ingress....! Polyethylene I think is only one in the way of foams that is close to 2% water soak up over lifetime basically... Thermolite/coosaboard ect are just blended glass structure + glues+ polyethylene?....still 2% rot over lifetime.

    It appears you used all chopped strand mat ? It will plug the hole , but does not have much strength on its own . If the area beyond the hole was damaged or cracked, you may want to add a few layers of biaxial or woven roving. I would keep a close eye on it as it is. It may be fine. Best wishes.

  • @BrisVegasFishing

    @@BrisVegasFishing nope you need to use matt then cloth then matt etc or a combination matt like 1708. And mate you didn’t even replace the stringer you ripped off either, completely nuts, you need to cut a hole in the floor from the top, dig that Bunnings foam out and tab in a new stringer from the top. And also glass in the repair from the top to the inside of the hull.

  • @BrisVegasFishing

    @BrisVegasFishing

    10 ай бұрын

    It’s held up fine over a year later, but look I’d definitely recommend repairing from the inside of the hull before doing the outside. This will give you far better strength and longevity. However if it’s like my boat and you can’t get to the inside without creating more work it’ll be fine.

  • @ericneering6357

  • @BrisVegasFishing

    @BrisVegasFishing

    3 ай бұрын

    One of those best you could do at the time, if we wanted to spend more time and pull the deck up it would’ve been better. But cause it was quite a curved, high wear area didn’t wanna use wovens. Definitely would’ve given more strength. So far it’s held up really well and not worn through or busted again. 🤞

    I think you had some damage already that weakened that area. I can’t image anything floating that would do this. Water intrusion a little at a time weakens the hull. Some of that debris coming out looked rotten. Maybe you should of worked in a metal edge.

  • @BrisVegasFishing

    @BrisVegasFishing

    Жыл бұрын

    Haha that rotten piece was part of the original stringer from when the boat was first built. The damage stopped when it hit the new bulk head we’d installed a few years ago. Pretty sure what we hit going down the river was part of a pontoon or metal gangway, cause you’re right it’s hard to imagine hitting a piece of debris could do that much damage. Loads of rubbish in the river after the floods though.

    Is this patch still holding up nicely? I bought a boat with a hole and a shop told me it’s rotten and refused to take on the job. Now I need to do it myself. I really like this video and I’m gonna do a similar technique

  • @BrisVegasFishing

    @BrisVegasFishing

    5 ай бұрын

    Yeah still holding up well considering the lazy nature in which we patched it 😂 definitely would recommend glassing up from the inside if possible. But definitely remove as much of that rotten material as you can. We were lucky that we’d previously replaced all the stringers up to that bulk head. That small rotten peace was all that remained from the original stringers.

  • @BrisVegasFishing

    @BrisVegasFishing

    Жыл бұрын

    We just used the tins of expanda foam you can buy from most hardware stores. The foam is more there just to help keep the shape of the hull. So it’s easier to glass it. If it melts that fine. Wait time can depend on the weather and how ‘hot’ you mix your resin with hardener. We would just give it a couple hours between layers. And then sand back/ apply acetone between layers.

    Thanks mate. Appreciate it 🤙 Good question, I come from a family of boat builders so I’ve always been around glass boats. There’s many different reasons why I prefer glass over ally. But the main one for argument sake is noise in the water, when you’re in a glass boat you don’t get that water slap. When you’re in an ally boat it sounds like you’re in a coke can on the water. 😅
