In this video I scratch build a couple miniature dumpsters for tabletop gaming. These are pretty much all made out of paper products.
Some specific items used in this build that might not be on my Essential Equipment page:
(As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases)
CORRUGATED PAPER
(USA) amzn.to/2J3WhxY
(Canada) amzn.to/2X3MVw2
(UK) amzn.to/2NdNYFg
(Germany) amzn.to/2IM7XGN
CHIPBOARD
(USA) amzn.to/2BZ6Xdw
(Canada) amzn.to/2SxfITf
(UK) amzn.to/2R8hmOL
(Germany) amzn.to/2CNjNNP
METALLIC GEL PENS
I was going to try and find links to these but it's so hard to know online if they are the right kind. I suggest going to a local store where you can actually test the pens out before buying.

This is cool and all but people at home need to know this: If you happen to find a baby dumpster out in the wild DO NOT pick it up and take it home with you! Even if you don't see the mommy dumpster around she probably just left it there while shes out hunting for trash. Handling the baby dumpsters gets your human scent all over them and it makes it likely that their mothers will reject them if you try to re-introduce it back into the wild. So if you do rescue a feral baby dumpster its on you to take care of it, and boy those things grow fast and they grow big so make sure you have the necessary space. And while adult dumpsters will literally eat any trash you give them, the babies need to have their trash pre-processed. I recommend small bits of lint, paper sheddings and old pen caps to start.

And don't even get me started on imprinting...Baby dumpsters have to have adult dumpsters to imprint on, or else they grow up thinking they're humans and not dumpsters. You have to get this great huge dumpster puppet and rig it with a regurgitation mechanism to feed them and show them how to be dumpsters. Then they have to grow up in a natural street corner environment...Better just to leave them alone.

You guys, it has already been debunked and proven that mother trash cans will NOT reject their baby bin because of human sent. Their diet consists of human garbage and come in contact daily with them so they already have the humans sent 24-7 and will gladly take the baby back as soon as no human is present. Some idiots can't help themselves but to pick up a baby trash can and because of people like you spreading this false info, they take the baby home and the mother bin is never given the chance to come back. Now we have a dwindling population of trash cans as now some are too scared to even approach a brooding mama and will throw their trash into the water ways instead which has caused the trash cans to starve and now our oceans are polluted. All of this because of people repeating myths instead of doing real research. (I apologize for my long rant, and probably got too carried away. I have a lot of time on my hands at the moment.lol)

Possible tip for a version 2.0 dumpster - For the square tubes on the side, take a large plastic straw and cut it to length and then crease it flat and then crease it 90 degrees from the first to form a hollow squarish tube. Alternatively if you don't have plastic straws on hand, fold construction paper around itself using 25mm long piece for a 5mm square tube and cut the length to match the depth of the dumpster. This would give the hollow tubes needed on the sides for a slightly more realistic effect.

For more modern terrain ideas, a couple of different styles of broken down vehicles would be cool (4 door car, truck, buses) Even some trains/boxcars/railroads would be cool, and it could add some new storylines to your game! You could do passenger cars, tankards, supply trains, prisoner transport. Modular railways that look overgrown in some directions and used in others to help point the adventurers the way they need to go.

Construction - so buildings under construction, mortar silos, stacks of bricks, roof tiles and blocks, pallets, lengths of steel 5. Churches 6. Residential complex 7. Shops 8. Utilities building with huge generator, pylon and arc generator 9. Little electric sub-station's that all look the same (double doors usually green in colour, flat roof, air vent on opposite sides, big lock on the doors 10. Big round gas silos with circular walkways and ladder sections (Think catering pack of coffee or catering sized bean tin) 11. Advertising hoardings 12. Mini urban workshops, usually on an estate of about 20 or so units. 13. Mobile catering vans 14. Gypsy encampment 15. Prison 16. Police station 17. Telephone kiosks 18. ATM bank pods 19. Drive through 20. Bar I hope this gives you an idea or two for some builds.

I wanted to add custom slogans to my 15mm Soviet tanks, but couldn't find fine enough white pens. Finally tried using a dried out micro pen to apply my white paint. Just dip the pen tip in slightly watered down white acrylic and write directly on your surface. It takes a bit of practice to get the procedure down right, especially how often to clean off the pen tip, but the end result is worth it. I'm now the proud owner of a T-34/85 emblazoned with "Where are Moose and Squirrel?" (in Russian, of course) on its tiny turret.

An easy way to catch sizing errors isn't just to use a mini for scale, but to imagine the mini actually using the object. In this case, imagine the trouble the mini would have lifting a cover that already rests at head height, then keeping the lid elevated as you lift a full bag of trash over its head. The finished dumpster model doesn't look bad next to the mini probably because proportions and scales are often exaggerated for various reasons when dealing with miniatures. Small details are exaggerated for visibility. Thinner objects like swords are rendered thicker for durability. Larger objects can look smaller when the various smaller components are made to look larger. Exterior-only buildings may be created a bit smaller than what you'd need to house the desired interior. Scatter terrain may be sized as much for visible cover versus clear line of sight than realism.

Great weathering on this one! :) I was thinking while watching you do it, that maybe you could've used those paper strips to encase those wooden things on the sides to create a bit of a hole at the ends at least, to enhance the illusion that they are hollow.

You ever try the water and salt technique for paint chipping? brush on some water, sprinkle on some coarse salt, let it dry. Then paint over it, let it dry then gently brush the salt off

It looks cool but takes too long for me. The hairspray only needs like 2 minutes to dry which is why I like it.

Also, you might be able to use rubbing alcohol instead of water as long as the alcohol doesn't mess with the paint. It would dry quicker and probably still hold the salt in place. Something to test on some scraps.

Trash Canzzzz!!!!! Trash Cans and Dumpsters are where the best things are stashed in post apocalyptic wastelands :D Maybe your dumpster needs a tiny rodent (or unusually large rodent) or overly large cockroach :O

Awesome, I got a shipping container done just need to paint it, now gonna add some dumpsters. How about some 55 gallon drums, maybe one that has been used to burn stuff in. BTW dumpster can come in different cubic yard sizes, a 8 cubic yard dumpster is 7.1 feet high!

Registration marks are so helpful and useful on a paper cutters. At one of my work places we have paper cutters with marked different colors of tape that are marked and is used as registration marks when we’re cutting. It’s super helpful especially when we have someone who doesn’t understand what we mean but we don’t laugh at the person. This is totally unnecessary and only if the person had time they can take different sizes of binder board and glue them together then to the dumpster or carefully take an x-acto precision cutter or X-Acto #15 Keyhole or some other products from x-acto to hollow out the wood. Do whatever you want as long as you’re happy with what you made then that’s what matters.

Awesome work!! I'd like to see more modern terrain as that's what I'm working on right now. Making stuff for Fallout wasteland warfare. More specifically beds, couches and appliances would be awesome. Stuff that people arent allready doing on KZread. Just want to mention, it's great seeing a fellow Canadian creating such great things. Greetings from Edmonton!
