Making Ming's Congee From Pixar's Turning Red
Because moms make the best congee, period. Thanks Mom, for the inspo - this one's for you. And Pixar. And Mei-Mei.

I watched Turning Red with my family on Friday and found it really touching. When someone is sick, I make congee or restorative chicken soup. Growing up there was little to no positive representation of asian americans on TV or movies. So nice to see things have improved and my kids generation have positive roles. I especially loved the few scenes with the father and it made me cry.

Turning red touched so many Cantonese souls, being a Cantonese diaspora and seeing tvb portrayed and Cantonese hymns being sung made me so happy. Turning red is such a step forward for Asian representation and I hope other ethnicities will be represented too

Sad what tvb has become these days. A state propaganda machine

@@Eira436 it depends on when you watch it lol. Besides most people I know don't use tvb as much because the tvb app is easier to use
What's amazing about this is that the ingredients in the congee actually correspond to a red panda's diet: long beans/asparagus to bamboo, as well as the eggs & mushrooms (red pandas raid birds' nests & eat fungi in the wild). Even the porridge itself, as red pandas do eat the seeds of the plants they feed on.
Little tip if you're going out to buy the dried scallops for this dish: these are whole scallops. Whatever store you're buying from, check if they also have broken ones in stock (i.e. non-whole ones). The quality would be slightly lower, but those usually go for a noticeably lower price as well.
I've just watched turning red too! I love how meimei's mother is a positive, encouraging maternal figure to her (well at least most of the time, lol). Anyway here's a tip, wash the rice beforehand and keep the tossed-but-still-wet rice in the freezer. The rice will break quicker in the pot.
Turning Red was definitely the representation I’ve been waiting for all my life as an Asian woman. Not just stereotypes and rebellious colored hair streaks-our family culture.
If you added a streak of bacon, it would've become Mulan's breakfast!
I have yet to watch Red but this video just makes me even more excited to watch it. As a Chinese American from Hong Kong, everything little thing about this video is just perfect, the congee itself as I basically grew up on this, washing the rice, the addition of the 乾瑤柱 (dried scallops, I absolutely love this), and can't forget of course the cute Totoro T-Shirt (I loved the oven mitts too)! Love your work Inga! Keep up the amazing work and representation you do!
The ultimate comfort food. Whenever I'm feeling homesick, I usually put in preserved duck egg, white fish, tiger shrimp, and scallops, because that's what we got whenever we went out for dinner as a family.
my friends and I had the same thoughts about the movie! it's great to see more representation in movies and hopefully it will help the younger generations feel less alone for growing up a bit different from their peers (๑•̀ㅂ•́)و✧
Only to think about Turning Red makes me cry, it’s such a beautiful film, to think that it was made by all of those amazing women and that people like you that are being represented are feeling good after watching it makes me so so happy! I know I’m one of the only people that knows congee in my social circle (thanks to you!) and to recognize that on screen, made me so happy for these ethnicities 💛 as a woman from a country that also values tradition, in their own way, not specifically an Asian woman, I felt so much empathy for Meimei and I was so happy to see anxiety rep too! Aw only great things to say about it And love the video Inga! 💛
Always had congee in our household. I hate ginger though, and my mom would always add so much to it. I think she was trying to kill me. She also just gave me some congee yesterday to take home. lol. Great movie too. I enjoyed it as well.
In India ( South India mostly ) we make something similar to congee but it's called Ganjee . Ganjee too has the same purpose as the Congee , a heartwarming meal when you're sick or an easy meal for when you're lazy :)
Don’t know if you’re seeing this or ever will Inga, but I’d love to see you make Jin’s dinner feast! The one where he stir fried veggies and what not.
just when I wondered if anyone would do a replica of Ming's morning congee, you did it, great job as always Inga. this is the ultimate comfort food for us Chinese.
I never knew rice could be made this way untile now. I definitely want to try it😋. It's cool to see how other cultures make their food.

Congee is also another name for rice porridge and it's so good. I think every culture has a version of this of some sort.

Growing up in a Filipino Culture, I could also relate all the struggles Ming went through. Tough love.
Growing up, congee with minced pork along with ginger and century egg slices was the best breakfast whenever i was sick 😋😋
Reminds me of Lugaw or Arroz Caldo, the Filipino versions of Congee. It warms the body and soul...
So beautiful!! Turning red was so moving loved it so much on so many levels
This movie made me unexpectedly emotional in some parts. I have to say I was impressed with how accurate it was.
i think it's so sweet that this is a "breakfast dish" even if it takes sometime to be made. in my family breakfasts are something quick or just a coffee and lunch is most important meal
yes! you're back with another video :)) i'm on break from school and i've been pretty free, so it is a treat to see your video notification! thank you for the video :D
Congee looks so cute✨😍!! Well done Inga 👏
My son is nearly 3 and we watched Turning Red for the first time a few weeks ago and now whenever he wants to watch it again, he says “mummy, I watch orange bear!” 😂
I just watched the movie last night and I had the exact same thoughts when I saw the congee! I’m so glad you made it and it reminds you of home. I’m adopted, but I’ve been back to china a couple times, and every time I had congee for breakfast at the hotel
Watched it 3 times and still want to watch turning red for more.. as asian, i can relate with it so very very muchhhhhh.. And this cute congee just too cute to bring good memories of the movie 😍😍😍
i literally just stopped everything i was doing when i saw the notification. your videos always have a way of calming my soul. thank you
forget the congee-- watching this vid was a healing experience! and despite this being from a Pixar movie, the Totoro sweatshirt was the exact vibes. something about this, be it the gentle quietness or the soft nostalgia or that little bit of wistful melancholy, just oozed Studio Ghibli. truly, a heartwarming video. thank you so much for making it??? i'll have to try congee one of these days; it looks far superior to chicken soup, hahaha
Well that gives me some ideas to improve my version of congee i cook for my kids and wife. Great sharing about the preparation steps taken.
The totoro hoodie made this video extra cozy
I love how excited you are about food!
The congee scene reminded me of Mulan's Mushi congee to Ping. Love!
❤Your channel is literally my comfort place. You make me so happy. Love you❤
These videos are so comforting ✨
I’m OBSESSED with that movie!! It’s so endearing
I watched Turning Red and I related to Mei so much and it also brought back many family memories and it was just super heartwarming.
So calming and enjoyable watching your videos. :) 💖
This vid was just comforting ♥️♥️♥️
Uncle Roger reacts to this! Spooning Rice inside Mason jar…HAIYAaaaaaa!
I havent watched this video yet, but I'm sure it's better than great. love the content Inga!
Loved that movie! Super cute!
Can't wait to watch it, I've heard so many good things about it. Btw, love your pot, where did you get it from?
This was so calming!
Thank you for sharing this with us. ❤
growing up on grits, I feel like I would love this!
welcome back!! could you please make a video on healthy recipes that are only a few simple ingredients? sometimes it’s a struggle to make healthy food because not a lot of ingredients are available or affordable

For me I cook rice in vegetable stock and add whatever veg I have lying around. Garlic helps if you have it, and then add an egg or two either poached in with the rice or fried on the side.
First video I’ve ever seen by this wonderful person and I really enjoyed the vibes and aesthetics and just everything about this. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a creator who gives a good genuine feel to me.
Inga, ilove this so much! This video was a hug to my broken heart
Ohhhhh... congee for breakfast! Yum! I'm doing it tomorrow for sure! And I've bookmarked Turning Red to watch tonight! Advertisers: See how effective Inga is? I will eat, watch or buy anything she posts. 🤠
The patience you have to get rice our of the jar with the measuring cup 👍
Congee is so soothing not only to your stomach but also to your heart.
I'm not asian, but being more or less from San Francisco, congee is sort of nostalgic for me as well. This video made me want to eat some. 😋😄
Loved this video 😊

Hi Inga your congee looks delicious! I’m wondering what’s your rice to water ratio?
@ejynk
2 жыл бұрын
for slightly watery but mostly thick porridge i use 1:10, my preference leans toward runny but this should still be solid enough to put a cute face on. i fill the little rice cup that comes with my rice cooker to around half its height and put ~3 cups of water and that is enough for 3-5 meals depending on how many sides i make.
This video was so relaxing
THat looks really good.
When I make congee, I put it in an instant pot, 1 cup Jasmine rice, 6 cups water, ginger, dried scallop and pressure cook for 35-40 minutes and then once done, use pork floss and seaweed and sesame seeds. I would also fry the eggs in a bit of oil and baste it. Chinese style fried eggs rather than the western Sunnyside egg type thing
I haven't seen Turning Red yet but I loved seeing how inspired you were by it! Also I love the little happy wiggles after the first bite ^_^
Turning Red is my absolute favorite movie so this is very satisfying to watch❤
love ur sweater
I absolutely adore this oh my gosh I’m going to try to make this! I wonder where you could get the dehydrated scallops
I had congee for breakfast sometimes while in China, it was however just the very simple kind that didn’t have any flavoring to the congee itself so you relied on the Chinese pickled vegetables and pork floss and such to add flavor to it. I wasn’t a huge fan of congee then, but now when stuck in Europe and not having visited China for almost 12 years, I do miss it and will have to try to cook congee here at home sometime and probably cook it with some flavoring as I don’t have access to pork floss and Chinese pickled veggies here. I’m even considering cooking the congee in beef stock with some ginger added to it to “Asianify” the flavor profile a bit and almost make it as if it’s noodle broth congee or something. Oh sheesh, now I need to cook my Chinese style pork belly soon, I’m craving Asian cuisine!
Sometimes when I'm toooo lazy I just mix porridge(conge) with a can of cample mushroom soup. It taste sooooooo gooood!!!! Put some dice chickens in there. Yum yum.
My grandma is japanese so while watching it, i learned more about another asian culture that is not my own. Would you recommend congee to someone who has never had it and isnt a fan of rice or tapioca pudding? Is it the same consistency?
@aznmochibunny

It really depends. Some people actually like their congee watery while others make it with less water. But either way, it's not sweet like tapioca pudding.
wonderful video, cant wait to see more.
When I first saw the movie, I thought, "Why are they putting fried eggs and mushrooms onto oat porridge?" because obviously, in the UK, porridge is made with oats. Then I discovered this porridge is a rice dish. LOL! And it looks really good too.
Wow that look's so cool 😋 I just saw this on notification and just click on it without looking on any other video 😀
Grew up hating congee. But this looks so good.
Ok, I’m tempted to make one, too 🙈🍲
Your shirt has totoro on it!! So cute~~
yayy congee our comfort food
you made me crave congee noww
Congee reminds me of "canja", an brazillian dish that is the same, but we mix chicken soup with congee and carrots to make the rice more yellowish color. It's really more a comfort food too, normally maked on winter and for the harsh days, where you can't buy much.
that is just the cutest thing
My favourite is having 皮蛋瘦肉粥 (century egg and pork congee) paired with some 油条 (Chinese fried dough)🤤
Okay so i’ll make this and eat this while watching the movieee!!
She’s so beautiful
I would love it if it has toasted garlic 😋
Wow I can’t wait to make your food, Amazing

why did this video make me cry? :,)
Your gloves are soooo cute...
Mmm.. this is my fave go to meal on a cold day I use fish sauce for the umami bomb though
The congee kind of reminds me of the porridge Mushu made in Mulan, except that had a bacon strip smile instead of soy sauce.
@aznmochibunny

The only issue with Mulan's breakfast porridge was that it wasn't authentic with the bacon in it. Turning Red's is a bit more accurate to how Chinese and other Asians would actually eat and serve it.
Great video
It cute 😍 for a bowl of congee
Adorable💛💛
when Inga said scallion bangs at 6:56 my Asian ass immediately went to scallion pancakes 😂 took me a minute there
In my house, my grandma made congee with carrots and ground pork. We eat it with toasted sesame oil, soy sauce, steamed egg, and cakwe (油条). I should learn the recipe because i would like to make it someday in the future 😂
You looked very nostalgic all throughout the vid Inga, just to remind you to take some time out of the office and touch back home to check on your mum and maybe other family members. Not a crisis so btw, I genuinely get like that when I haven’t spoken to my parents in a while :’)
It's a great movie!! Those low audience scores is just sad!!!! I love congee with thousand year old eggs!!
I think that was omaju for Mulan!
awesome
I knew she's gonna make a video about this
