Have you ever wondered how gears are made? Ever wanted to try making your own gears? Then watch as I make a pair of 100 tooth Module 1 gears for a mini Lathe. As impractical as these ended up being cutting these was a great way to learn and one I would highly recommend.
Lets just say once you've cut a 100 tooth gear by hand you'll appreciate what goes into gear cutting.

    Just a word of advice about cutting feed direction. It is recommended to only cut forward into the gear blank with a B&S type gear cutter. They being a form cutter are likely to grab in the cut groove if you use them for 'climb milling'. The best procedure is to cut forward through each tooth slot then return back through that slot with no extra infeed put on.

    Good day to you, a great share of making a gear, we enjoyed. Smart to cut the first in a soft material to learn it ten converts to the steel that makes sense and you put them right to work on your lathe nice. Lance & Patrick.

    Better to use a flanged arbour to avoid the runout that resulted. That is likely to induce more wear on the aluminium teeth, operating in the lathe.

    Well done Joe, years ago I had misplaced my 40T gear on the lathe drivetrain, so I made one from Al like you. But i made a single tooth cutter ground to the contour of the tooth pattern. It worked great and I made another from Bronze and then I found the gear. Anyhow, gear cutting is a great experience, enjoyed the vid, congrats on the subs, and cheers!

    Sounds interesting cutting gears with a single tooth cutting tool. Yeah it is satisfying when that last pass lines up and created a perfectly spaced gear. Thank you for your continued support on the channel Howder all the best.

    Hi Joe, I’ve recently come across your videos and nearly binged watch them all! It’s great to follow you on your journey and excited for your future projects. I’m in a similar position to yourself, I’m in the process of building a workshop in my garden to house my Warco lathe. Even got a baby on the way too! I’m a complete novice to the ways of home machining and finding your videos both inspiring and informative. I’m a design engineer by trade and trying to learn the model machining ways. Possibly one fun future project for your channel could be an RC tank? All the best, Alex.

    Bit risky drilling both blanks together, but, bcoz it was Aluuminum (spelling intentional) you got away with it 🙂Flat tooth, yep, its tedious doing all those teeth, if we are honest, most of us have done that at least once. And, Climb milling vs Std milling, see the difference on alternate teeth, the smooth ones are climb milled, but there is danger of snatch 🙂 Good job for 1st try 😀

    Do you have to harden the gear s before you fit them?

  • @MachiningwithJoe

    @MachiningwithJoe

    2 жыл бұрын

    If they were going to be under heavy load then yes make them from high carbon steel and harden them. However for a mini lathe these should be ok as some versions of this lathe come with plastic gears.
