Machining with Joe

Machining with Joe

A KZread Channel started from a hobbyist for the hobbyist.
Hopefully my videos can help you as a machinist/ creator grow. Wether that be helping you gain new skills on your lathe or inspire you with ideas to build or modify your equipment.

A little back story on me, so my skills and training all came from the motor vehicle trade where I progressed all the way to becoming a master technician.
I have now targeted my skills towards machining and helping new machinists along with inventing and creating quirky inventions and designs.
Every now and again you will get to see videos of my other passion mountain biking, alongside other outdoor hobbies.
So if you like what you read please subscribe and turn notifications on.

I have got one of these on order - originally tried to get a used one like you but they where all either badly worn or expensive so ended up biting the bullet and investing in a new one from Colchester, it cost a small fortune but will hopefully last me a lifetime, I did consider a Master or a Triumph but they would have just taken up a bit too much room in the garage and obviously cost more! - Can’t wait for it to arrive!!

If you want to really find out if your taper is good then you should blue it and make corrections. Just plonking it in and saying it feels fine is a shite procedure. I will not smash that button.

"what a lovely surface finish that is" Sorry, but it's not a great finish. As you do more grinding, you'll begin to see the defects. I think most of the problem here is aggressive cuts and large step over. Don't worry, you'll figure it out. Neat little machine.

Do you not need to add a limit switch to the power feed so it doesn't run into the chuck?

Nice one! Cheapest way of doing "about 20mm" is wrap insulating tape around the drill "about 20mm" from the end😂

Very good video. My question is how do I wire another switch in to change direction of the motor? I want to use a DPDT center off 6 pole momentary switch to change the direction of the motor. The two wires that are connected to the center 2 posts of this switch are the ones that get reversed depending on which way you move switch. Which two wires would I hook to these center posts that would control the direction of the motor?

Just wait until he has to retract the quill to remove a drill chuck or live center, and he'll realize what a kluge this is.

I suggest adding 20% to the budget and purchase the hardened races that are normally available with thrust bearings. If you were able to part off the steel used for your DIY washers they weren't hard enough and will deform under load.

Another quick way to check if the wires are a pair is if you hold two of them together and can spin the motor if the motor is tougher to turn when there touching. Saves having to bust out the ohm meter

Surely the force on the leadscrew will be on the inner face when the vice is tightened? I've got a Vevor vice on my mill and to be fair, it was just fine out of the box. For the money, they are hard to beat. Very impressed with the quality of the grinding and the general flatness and tolerances when measured on my surface plate.

Didn't you harden thrust washers before grinding them? 'Soft' washers are a waste of time with needle rollers. From video's I've seen, and after buying a Chinese mill vice, they are not particularly accurate, as mentioned in other comments, base and working surface are not parallel so anything machined in them tapers between 0.004" and 0.006" across width of vice jaws (4"~5") I haven't even measured front to back yet. I guess scraping bottom surface co-planar with jaw surface could fix things and would still be way cheaper than buying KURT or similar at £6~£700.

I'm confused about the Lead Screw Power Feed motor. Doesn't your lathe gearbox turn the lead screw, making the external motor superfluous? Otherwise...Great video! Thanks for putting this together.

Great vid fella, have you considered adding a limit switch to the power drive feed so that I is stopped say 3mm from the chuck, as you useing a QCTP you probably never use odd tools for stock removal, a limit may be the final element in a great idea
