💦 Making Freshwater From Saltwater In A Caravan! Bremer Bay Roadtrip

It's been a long time since we installed our reverse osmosis desalinator. We finally get to see how it goes making freshwater from saltwater. We're firing it up in Albany as we travel along the South Coast of WA.
But how viable is it really?

    Great idea and machine. We had same type with membrane in remote village/mines to filter saltwater from bores. Few issues which may show in 6 m to year. The reverse osmosis membrane takes all the minerals and reduces oxygen out of water. If the RO water comes in contact with metals or organic (you) it absorbs the minerals and in metals cases (HWS, taps) it damages them ie, copper, tin, zinc, stainless etc. The solution to it is you can get a sacrificial anode manifold which processed water passes through picking up minerals returning to normal. All we had to do is monitor or the anodes and replace them. Anodes are copper, zinc, tin, stainless manifold. Be very careful as prolong use of drinking RO water can damage liver and kidneys if you don’t have manifold installed.

    That's interesting info. We're yet to rely 100% on de-sal water and most liekly never will. It's more to supplement our other water, so hopefully we won't encounter the issues you've pointed out.

    I reckon that getting fresh water from salt water has got to be worth the trouble in the long run. Clean water is essential and now you can get anywhere on the coast of Australia! The Israelis are experts in osmosis and thankfully air defence systems.

    I mentioned that a desal unit in a van would be a great idea to a mate of mine about 3 years ago. My mate tried telling me it could not work. I don't really have a need for it in our current setup and the way we travel, so I was glad to see someone successfully try it. My mate is now thinking about it when he gets a new van built. Happy and safe travels.

    It’s better to not send reject back to the feed. You might do this if you have limited feed water supply. You will quickly scale and/or foul your membrane since you are never getting rid of what the membrane is rejecting.

    Guys just viewing you latest vid with the saltwater desalination system ( great idea & effort achieving that) with the minor water leaks are these from the hose connectors? If they are you may like to google the Hoselink product. Since installing these on our water hoses & caravan we have zero leaks. Pretty much guaranteed not to bust from hoses because of the install process. Great vids.

    Hey! The brine went back into the ocean, but this will depend where we are when using it. Theoretically the unit can product 80L/hr but we've been getting more like 60L/hr

    Oh please, if you have sun, make a solar still. The US Navy created an inflatable solar still to put in Lifeboats, and it works. Would not be too hard to make one from clear plastic and a few other bits and pieces. Or just make a good old fashioned still to put over a fire :) What you put into it, is up to you :) Wink Wink :)

  • @rossharvey1496

    @rossharvey1496

    People were taught to make solar stills in the military way back in the 1960’s as part of survival skills training. It came nowhere close to making over a litre per minute like I think Simon was aiming at. It makes no noise so I suppose just letting it run all day might make a few litres but I wouldn’t be patient enough to spend a whole day to produce maybe 5-10L. Maybe there are better devices around now?

  • @TheLifestylePioneers
