Making Deadly Red Mercuric Oxide

Ғылым және технология

In this video we are making emrcury(II) oxide which can be used as a precursor to all sorts of mercury salts.
Warning: The mercuric oxide might be contaminated with basic mercury sulfate because we tried to make mercuric acetate and a yellow insoluble solid was formed which we filtered off. The yellow solid, like basic mercury sulfate, was insoluble in water and hot acetic acid but it did easily dissolve in hydrochloric acid. This might also explain the incredibly high yield despite spilling a lot of the product while drying and leaving behind a substantial amount in the filter paper.

    From what I know the best way to precipitate mercury from solution is in fact by converting it into mercury(II) sulfide. I red in some books that it is the most insoluble sulfide of all.

    Well, the devil guy was Preisler ("Uncle Fester"), famous for his bad chemistry and misleading "how-to's". Morris commented on how contaminated the house must have been. The only reason I can imagine Preisler is still free and allowed to publish is because his instructionals are dangerously wrong. Notice how when Morris commented on it, Preisler said _"Oh, I'll take care of that later"?_ Like contaminating the bowl was the issue, not dumping mercury waste down the drain.

  • @THYZOID

    @THYZOID

    Жыл бұрын

    I can´t. concentrated sulfuric acid is now illegal here. If you know what you are doing and you are experienced enough to deal with mercury salts and heavy metal waste appropiately here´s a procedure someone sent me some time ago. "Measure 20g Hg and place in a 100ml conical flask. Do not use a round bottom flask, as all the mercury will not react. Add 60 ml concentrated H2SO4 (should be at least 94%) to the flask and fit a single hole stopper with a tube leading outside. This reaction produces lots of SO2 that will give you chemically induced asthma if breathed. Now slowly heat the flask. Bubbles of SO2 will rise from the acid/mercury interface. Maintain a vigorous bubbling of SO2 by adjusting the heat. A white crystalline deposit of HgSO4 will appear. The mercury should be completely reacted after about 30 minutes. Allow the reaction mixture to cool and pour off the acid. Pour the crystals/acid into 750 ml hot water and filter. Keep the liquid." Mercuric sulfate is highly toxic. Seriously if you don´t know what you are doing do NOT handle any mercury and its salts.
