    I had Bánh Chưng again tonight with Vietnamese friends here in Saigon, and then I sent a photo to my mom and she asked what is that and what is in it... so I want to thank you for this wonderful video that I could share with my mom, to explain everything, about the importance of Bánh Chưng in Vietnamese culture and history, how it is made and the ingredients. Vietnam has become a part of me since living here, and it is wonderful to be able to share my experiences here in some ways with my family and friends "back home".

    If you guys want to make the square sticky rice much more scrumptious, i suggest you should definitely put it in the frying pan with full of hot oil and fry it until it turns into the yellow color. Believe in me :)) that is the most traditional and delicious dish i always had when i was very small =)))

    Banh Chung is very uniquely Vietnamese. No other countries has it. But I can’t believe it takes 8 hours to cook. No wonder the green color from the leaves rub off on the rice to give it a uniquely green color. Very flavorful.

    My wife said she’ll try to make banh trung next tet! Your video brought back many childhood memories for me …from the history of banh trung to the way cutting banh trung. Thank you Van. Here in California, we like to pan fry banh trung to give it a crispy crunch. It also give it a different texture from the mushiness inside banh trung. BTW, I notice that you have a very nice and supportive family. So, Chuc Mung Nam Muoi to you and to your family Van.

  • @stellarzell

    @stellarzell

    For the sticky rice, soak it in water over night with pineapple leaf extract to dye the rice. For mung beans, you peel the skin by boil them first, then put into water and stir like you are making a beans tornador, the skin will float up on the surface. And with meat, choose the best, freshly butchered pork (if you can, bc i usually get them in the market. Frozen meat in supermarket is alright, i guess). Marinate the pork with fish sauce, dry seasoning, shallots (onion not gonna work, too bland). You can put whatever you want in, but the cake need fat, otherwise it will become hard to eat

    The real history of Banh Chung is the king of Vietnam was getting old so he had 18 darn sons and he said to all of them make me something good to eat and I will let one of you have my throne so all the sons went food hunting some got king crab 🦀 some got really exotic foods but the 18th son went to his farm and feel asleep when falling asleep he had a dream a fairy told him how to make banh Chung so the next miring he did what the fair told him he put banana leaf, mung bean, pork, and sticky rice all together to make banh chung then the competition happened and where the 18th son arrived everyone laughed at him and said how are you going to win with that piece of junk hahahaha all his brothers were laughing at him but when he told the king the meaning of banh Chung he was impressed and gave him the throne and it also tasted good and all his brothers were shocked and end of story [Gosh Dang!!!!]
