Making an Inspiration Board to Capture Art Ideas

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Join me in my studio as I update my mood/inspiration board, tidy my space, and share a favourite book. All things that I love to do when I want to hunker down for a season of focused creativity.
It's a short video this week, as I've been flat out getting ready to run my six-week online course, Modern Mixed Media. I haven't run this course since 2021, so it's really exciting and is bringing back many happy art-making memories. I love digging things out and getting re-inspired!
I hope you enjoy the video, and don't forget to join the waitlist for Modern Mixed Media if you are keen to join in on the next session of my popular 6-week course.

    Good Morning! That is a lovely board! Love that idea too! Laura what do you mean by raw canvas? I'm really wanting to try some art on things other than paper. Thanks for sharing your beautiful work and process with us!❤️💐

    Thank you Susan, raw canvas is canvas that has not had any gesso applied. It's more malleable and can be stained with inks and fluid acrylic. You can also stretch it on stretcher bars so it appears as a canvas ready to hang on the wall. Or you can keep it unstretched and use it in other craft projects. Students in my classes have created bags and pencil cases and things like that using their painted raw canvas pieces.

    @@LauraHornArt Thanks so much Laura! Somebody gave me 3 cheap stretched canvases and I actually took one out today and started using some acrylics that I have. And it was fun! Realizing that I can just add layers and layers I might just end up with something I like😂but I did find myself not being very loose with my Mark's. I really need to practice that. But that's what I'm going to do! I'm so literal in my way of thinking that I have a hard time just letting go. Maybe I should try painting blindfolded!🤔🤪🥰

    Hi Laura, I feel inspired to try a mood board instead of having stray pieces of paper floating around my art room. Would you consider making a video on watercolours that we buy and then don’t like and they sit in the drawer, and how we could mix them with other colours that then spark joy, thank you for your hard work in what you bring us, blessings from Michelle in Canberra

    Thanks Linda, I thought it was funny because at the beginning of the video I said that I was going to make it more colourful and then part-way through I realised that my idea of colourful isn't that colourful!! I'm very happy with how it turned out though :) Hope you are having a good week!

    Laura, this is a wonderful suggestion, so thank you very much for sharing. So often I've left some of my favorite pieces (I'm a paper artist just getting into watercolors) stored away in a drawer for later use and have forgotten about them. A beautiful board such as this would be wonderful and very inspirational when I have a creating block. 👍🏼🌻🌷 thank you again, I just love your channel. xo

    Thank you for the book recommendation. Books one of my favorite sources of inspiration. FYI, a couple things that draws me to your channel is the color pallets you choose; they are so beautiful.Would you share a bit more about the colors you use? And I also like that you lean towards botanicals.

    Will the course cover your process for making those personal references you put on your mood board? I create a lot of color charts, but I don't make separate references of various elements, backgrounds, etc. and I see how useful they can be.

  • @LauraHornArt

    @LauraHornArt

    Yes it definitely does cover that. Each week includes warm up exercises/studies as well as a main start to finish painting project. Many of the elements I added to the mood board are from the course. I take you through things like painting leaf studies, colour stories, mini abstracts, texture studies. and so on. It's really helpful, especially when it comes to painting more complete pieces.

    I love your art and have enjoyed Abstract Adventuring and Minimal Magic. I’m looking forward to this course but one question: botanicals don’t speak to me nearly as much as more abstract shapes. One of my greatest art loves is the work of Georgia O’Keeffe, both her early abstracts as well as the later Southwestern paintings, especially the desert color palettes. Which is a long way of saying how easily may I apply the botanical emphasis to other expressions? (Hope that makes sense!😊)

  • @LauraHornArt

    @LauraHornArt

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks Jeanne, the demos are about 50% abstract vs 50% botanical. Having said that, it’s the type of course that can easily be adapted to a more abstract style. Many of the lessons are about the process of making art and developing a healthy art practice. There are also lessons on colour, composition, finishing, framing, photographing etc that are applicable to all art. I’ve had many students that only focus on abstracts throughout the program. Hope that helps!

    @@LauraHornArt That helps a lot. I figured that there would be wide application, but thanks for the clarification. I’m excited to explore!
