Making an Indian Glass Fish Lure

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today's handmade fishing lure is a clear lipless crankbait based on the Indian Glass Fish. Starting with a wooden carving to make my silicone mold, I make several casts out of resin, layering detail into each new cast. Follow along with me as I make this lure and show you the techniques I use on this unique custom lure!

For the resin head you may want to look into hot stamping, I just got my heat resistant silicon rubber 1/2” thick (2) pieces 5” x 10”, and ordered the holographic foil(very thin), heat one side of rubber pad with iron, sit iron on 1 rubber pad for about 5 mnts, lay piece of foil ut to size wanted, lay resin ir blank lure on foil, cover with other rubber pad and press down rolling at same time, repeat steps for other side, no wrinkles very easy Just a thought

Nice lure, definitely recognisable as a glass fish. I did have to chuckle when you said you put it on a diet because in reality that's actually closer to their natural body shape. I've kept them in the past and they are a deceptively thin fish, I've always likened them to a skeletonised leaf. Still a great little build

I like how you made the lure look I plan on using the basic idea of how you did the 2 different castings I will be making Shad shaped lures and minnow plugs As I do a lot of river fishing for Large and Small Mouth Bass here in NW Ohio It will be nice to cast a number of lures , as the rocks and fallen trees like my lures as much as the bass do Also I am sure the Channel Catfish will enjoy chewing on my plugs also

  • @zimmtex

Supa cool video showing a lot of skill and some great ideas! Quick question, should you have done a quick no-frills version of the shape to see if it will swim well, or is this shape of lure pretty much guaranteed to work? Obviously you’ve thought of this but I didn’t see you mention it. 😀

  • @zimmtex

    @zimmtex

Thanks for watching! So, this design is basically a lipless crankbait. These types of lures need weight in the bottom as close to the nose as possible and a tow point on the top of the head. Knowing that, you can make a lot of variations like this one. To get more 'shimmy' in the action, you can make the top of the head flat and loose the fins. I do think that making a prototype is a good idea, especially if you intend to make a lot of the same lure.

Super sick! I think what would have made it easier would have been to carve a a skeleton and place it inside the mold, then injected your clear resin so that you didn’t have to sand back into your clear resin to carve out the bones. But that’s just my .02. Awesome design and attention to detail!

Great looking lure. Before casting in epoxy, for a glass like finish, coat the master in a thin layer of epoxy first and let it cure on your rotary setup. Then mold it, because the texture from the master always translates to the surface of your mold. Don't be afraid to put sprue vents on all the high points of your mold, and squeeze slightly and often before the pot life is up on the resin to evacuate all the accumulated top bubbles. I use a pressure pot which is a gift for perfect casts. I could tell you stories about the expensive mistakes I've made learning.

Hello! This lure measures approximately 7.62cm. I think it casts about 50 meters. Thanks for watching!

Really cool build! Did you make that epoxy mixer yourself? Really need one of those😬 do you ever get that the epoxy does not mix properly using that mixer?

I bought that mixer on a lure supply website. It is actually for mixing epoxies for rod building. It does a great job and always mixes correctly. Its a Pacific Bay RDM-1. Thanks for watching!

@@zimmtex thank you for taking the time to reply! Thats interesting as it doesn't seem to totally scrape the sides or the bottom, but the tilt it has probably helps with that. Ill try to build one as i have a few motors like those around 😎

Just scribed to your channel. Wished I had your email or contact info. I’ve never made a video much less hv the knowledge of how to post it to utube, I’m 60 and computer challenged for sure. But great artistic and imagination. I’m working on making a clear lure kind of like yours but I loved the inside 3D head and gut you did so I’m starting over but making a Rapala Jointed shallow Shad lure. But hv a few ideas I’m adding to it. Just ordered today new holographic foil for hot stamping the head and gut as well bones, going to make a bone skeleton or trying to make the bones now. Using small SS rods to make a rib cage on extend to the lateral.bone w/ hook loop. So you said eye loop just held in by resin? Man sure would hate to loose a trophy red fish or trout with eye coming out but going to try mounting it like you did. Would like to know the little dremel you were using. Thanks great vid

If you have any questions, leave me a comment. So far I've been able to answer them all. Also, I have links to almost all of the equipment I use in the description to help you get set up. Thanks again and good luck!

Fins open means the fish is on alert beings startled, lower fins means the fish is relax not noticeable of danger. So fins down always on a lour. In my opinion.
