Making an Alligator Swimbait
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
One of the great things about lure making is the freedom of creativity to make whatever you can imagine into reality. Viewers of my channel know that I love detailed carving and unusual lures. In this video, I walk through the step-by-step process of how to make a handmade wooden topwater alligator / crocodile fishing lure. This amazing swimbait lure has an amazing natural action which gives it a realistic presentation. I hope you get as much enjoyment watching it as I did making it!

Thanks! I have some improvements, but overall I really like this one.
For a matte finish that also has good protection you can double up the clearcoat. Start with a thin but very hard setting epoxy that will protect the paint without filling in too much then go over that with even something as simple as rattle can matte varnish to give the texture you want. That way the bottom coat is what gives the actual protection and the topcoat is just for aesthetic purposes so it doesn't need to be super durable

Nice carving. I assume you are planning on fishing that in Florida. Try system 3 clear coat its very thin and will preserve the detail. As was mentioned by another subscriber, spray that with a matte clear from Krylon. Going to need to find a monster bass that has grown up eating baby gators.

Astonishing lures! I do micro lures for myself,so I can understand the hardwork needed. Can you tell me if there is a rule regarding the place you need to put the weights on a jointed slider? I have made a lot of one piece sliders and they work fine,but on jointed one I cannot figure the correct place of the weights.Thanks in advance!

Turned out really nice. However, not sure if basswood was the right choice. I hear it can soak up water like a sponge.

Thanks! I think if you seal it really well it shouldn't be a problem. I agree that as with any wood lure you need to keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't get so beat up that you penetrate the seal.
What knives do you like using for carving lures? I noticed it doesn’t slip or cause the wood to splinter
@zimmtex
2 жыл бұрын
I generally use a box cutter with replaceable blades for rough carving. Most of the time I use an exacto knife for the detail work. The trick to avoiding splintering is to pay close attention to the grain direction. if you are cutting with the grain, take very small shallow cuts. I also replace the blades often so they are very sharp.

hi, i have same truecoat but it stay a little bit sticky after 2 days of drying at same quantity of part A and B
@zimmtex
2 жыл бұрын
You need a ratio of 32g of part B to 37g of part A. I use a digital scale to weigh out the parts because it is much more accurate. Give this a try; best of luck to you!

Good Morning Sir, I started to make lures and now I have a lot of them but I need epoxy to finish them. I followed your links for the true coat epoxy but it is out of stock. I really beg you to tell me an available exoxy resin for coating !! (your videos are awesome)
@zimmtex

Hello, glad to have you here! Hopefully we can get past these supply chain issues soon. I also have a link for East Coast Resin. I like it and used it for a long time. It tends to develop bubbles slightly more than TrueCoat but is a good alternative. Best of luck to you!

In that case, you can use the 30 minute epoxy. It is the hardest to work with in terms of bubbles and waves. Most of my first lures were made with that, but you really have to work fast and try not to stir in a lot of bubbles when mixing. A lot of people use diamondcoat, but I don't have any experience with it.
Neat. But like many an artist, you went past what looked the best (the last dark color). LOL Your next one will be perfect.

Well I do plan on making some more of these. What bothered me most about this one was the clearcoat. Anyway, there are a few tweaks I'd like to make the next tome around. Thanks for watching!
