Making an Airsoft Man From UNCLE Gun

Спорт

In this video I’ll modify an Airsoft version of the P38 pistol to look like the guns used by the agents on the “Man From U.N.C.L.E.” tv show, that aired in the mid-1960s.

With a foot of snow outside my door, a cup of coffee in hand, the Man from UNCLE gun Mod was a fun distraction. I enjoy all your videos. I am 77. I was a toy gun- smith in my youth. I could repair most toy cap guns. The old ones could be taken apart with a screwdriver and springs and internal parts could be replaced. Toy guns are just not what they once were.

There used to be one of those replica gun companies back in the 70's that made the full on "Man From U.N.C.L.E." gun. Chopped (non-firing) P.38, bobbed hammer, flash hider, sound suppressor, scope and mount, extended magazine and shoulder stock (!!). It had the non-standard special wide groove grips too. I believe it was actually a licensed replica. I was never a MFUNCLE guy, I was much more an I Spy (and remained a Robert Culp fan until his death) and especially a "Mission Impossible" guy...c'mon man, Peter Graves, Leonard Nimoy, Lesley-Ann Warren, Barbara Bain, Greg Morris? Oh yeah!

A guy had a display of reel guns he'd made, some from actual firearms, some from air softs, some from Umarex BB guns, some from blank guns (chrome plated 1911 type similar to Jackson's 'Mr. 9mm' in Pulp Fiction), some from model kits (laser pistol from Lost in Space and Phaser from Star Trek), some from toys, some from scratch. It was a fascinating display! From Buck Roger ray guns of the 1930's, to latest Star War fantasy guns he had a bunch. I was amazed to see how many fantasy guns were based on real guns. He did have the Man From Uncle Gun as well as the T.H.R.U.S.H. sniper rifle (made from an M-1 carbine and an M-3 IR scope). Guy seemed in his forties, a real movie/TV buff showing you don't have to be an old timer to appreciate this stuff.

Very cool! I'm a Millennial. I see a lot of hate from Boomers and Gen X toward Gen Z because Z realllllllly loves their video games and the guns used in them. Millennials love video games too, but we were there from the start and saw video games grow to a serious thing. Gen Z has had powerful, realistic gaming platforms ready to go right away. I started out with Medal of Honor using a Sten and Garand made of 5 or 10 polygons total. Gen Z plays games with ULTRA REALISTIC weapons in their games, so naturally they are drawn to the real thing. So many Boomers and Gen X dismiss the Gen Z when they express interest in a SCAR or a Single Action Army for example simply because they saw it in a video game. Hickok45 made a "mic drop" point a while back: "How many of you rushed out and bought a Model 29 because of Dirty Harry?" It's really nice to see you make this video Mike. Not only are you revisiting your childhood by making a cool prop gun that you loved, but you're also using an airsoft gun to do it! Lots of people won't even acknowledge that airsoft and BB replica guns are a thing worth owning if you can't get the real thing. Mixup98 just showed us all in a video how a replica BB gun can be a great training aid in this ammo crunch! :) Anyway, long rant. Loved the video.

I'm old enough to remember The Man From UNCLE, I was always fascinated by the accessories the pistols had, particularly the barrel extension which was in addition to the silencer. I know that longer barrels will produce higher muzzle energies (all things being equal), but it's normally achieved by replacing the original barrel with a longer one not screwing an extension on the end of the original one. Have you heard of any examples of real life barrel extensions would they even work?

Heaven help me, I enjoyed it. Mainly the presentation. Being almost 82 ,we were the first family in the neighborhood to have TV. The neighbors would come over and we would all watch through a large French window. That is, when we could get a signal from the very tall antenna on the roof. Nearest broadcast station was a couple of hundred miles away. Loved all of the shows you mentioned. Often we watched just snow. But, it was a regular neighborhood get together...good times with good friends.

Now that Mike has gotten into airsoft for indoor shooting, you know what's got to be next... airsoft replicas of cap and ball revolvers! I know there are a few airsoft modern revolvers but I have no idea if they have any older style ones, cap and ball era or cartridge era. I went down the airsoft rabbit hole a little bit some time ago, I have a S&W M29 airsoft revolver, as well as a few semi autos. The S&W has 6 plastic "shells", you load the BB into each shell, and so this way it functions very much like a real revolver. It seems like that design would work the same for a Colt 1873 SAA type of gun. No idea how to make a good cap and ball style in airsoft, unless you just went with a "cartridge conversion" style, using the plastic shells, and just going for the look of the cap and ball style.

We are the same age and watching this video, it is remarkable to see that a black kid from the inner city of Cleveland would have so much in common with a kid from New England. I really enjoyed this video, it was very informative and I, am your new subscriber!

Can I suggest doing a Mk II of this project? Get a gas-powered 'blowback' airsoft P-38. Gas guns are true semi-automatic and cycle. Much more fun to shoot. After shortening the barrel and adding the 'birdcage', you need to file down the hammer, and then add custom grips. The U.N.C.L.E. grips are flat with horizontal grooves, and black. If you really want to be picky, the right grip has a slot for the 2x scope. This is all if you want a crazy accurate version, of course. 😊

The worst thing about reruns was when the networks announced there'd be a "Summer Replacement" show instead of what I had missed!

This was a fun little video and the build turned out really cool! I highly recommend you look up some airsoft guns for plinking around in the winter months they are a absolute blast! I like my green gas blowback pistols and they make a ton of replica firearms of all types you might find interesting

Nice video. My fantasy woman was Julie Newmar aka Cat Woman. Other favorite shows Time Tunnel, Sea Hunt, Combat and F Troop to name a few. Loved TMFU & also pined for the Uncle Special for many years. I eventually aquired two P-38s one was carried in WWII.

I'm about 10 years younger than you. The spy show fad had ended by my time, but I still watched reruns of "Get Smart" and classic "Star Trek" (I watch the DVDs of both from time to time, even today) . The popular primetime show I remember watching was "Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom". Only tranquilizer guns there.

You're an Eye Spy fan, you would know Kelly Robinson used a P-38K, which was the real life Intelligence officer side arm of the Cols War. It would of been difficult to transform a regular P-38 into one, as the forward sight was on the slide and couldn't be covered by a flash suppressor.

Put something like that in your desk now days you would go to jail an kicked out of school even if it was just a card board cut out. There was two shows in the 60s that were spy shows when they first started, Burke's Law, an Mannix, them when the spy craze slowed down they became detectives. Mannix drove a cool custom Olds Tornado, an Burke was driven around in a fancy older car.Gene Barry stared as Burke an Mike Conner as Mannix. Two good shows.

The ones you get in England are painted RED or BLUE so they cannot be confused with a real gun. But I would love one of these.
