The Polish Capper
Спорт
A lot of you have written in, asking me to do a video on the Polish Capper for cap & ball revolvers. The Polish Capper is promoted as working with both Colt and Remington style cap & ball revolvers, and this video I’ll give you a detailed look at the Polish Capper in operation.

Definitely not a Ted Cash, I think modifying the cylinders would be less stressful. Thank you for a truthful review.
Thank you. It is equally important to show the things that don't work, as well as the things that do.
if you hold the capper downwards and pull back the spring lever, you get about three caps in the chamber. So after fitting one, another is automatically placed in the jaws. I.e. you don't have to pull back the spring each time, there's a knack to it but when you become accustomed to it's operation. It's a nice device epecially for the Remmington reproductions.
It works for me. The capper exit gets polished over use and works even better.
I've had my Polish Capper for about 6 months and use it cap my 1858 Remington New Army revolvers for SASS. I will note that your technique exhibited in the video is not what the Polish dude shows in his videos to get caps to the head nor how he puts caps on the cones. Once I began to replicate his technique, I had terrific success -- and my shooting buddies on the loading table appreciated it too since I can now cap quickly and efficiently. I have not modified my Remmies in any way....and I don't want to (stainless steel with 8" barrels). I know you have plenty of experience with these revolvers -- in fact, much of my knowledge early on with cap and ball revolvers came from watching your videos -- but I'm thinking that your choice of caps with those particular cones/nipples may have a little bit to do with your capping success. I replaced the original Pietta factory nipples with TrackoftheWolf stainless steel nipples when I did my original action job (thanks to your videos for the instruction!) on the pistols. I use CCI #11 caps which Track recommends for their replacement nipples. Once I got the Polish Capper's technique down, I had an easy go of capping my revolvers. While English is not his first language, watching this dude (starting around 4:30 in the vid) and replicate his movement. "Down, up, actuate the lever with thumb, push, pull." Pushing with the thumb behind the capper, IMHO, gets the cap to seat well. I still go back with a small dowel rod to insure all caps are seated fully. As you are aware, in SASS, if it don't go bang, it's a miss. :) kzread.info/dash/bejne/nWaKvKayd8bVnpc.html
Certainly glad that's not a sales video for polish cappers!
Part of the fascination with cap and ball revolvers is the loading of them. It never gets old watching mike load these guns.
Another great video ! Thanks, greetings from France 🇨🇵
I really like my Polish Capper it's only one that I use, it works on my Remington and all my Colts. There is a little bit of a learning curve to it but once you get that down it's a great thing to have. Another thing I want to point out is that the caps have to fit snugly onto the nipple if they're a little loose then it doesn't work that well. I think the nipples are a little undersized.
The spring is holding a cap - after sending every single cap on the nipple first push the button back a little bit and than live the cap on the nipple. Do not push ahead, because caper holds caps much stronger i this cause . It seems to be main reason of your troubles with that caper. Best wishes from Poland :)
Now if only I could find some percussion caps in stock!!! Kind of regretting I have no flinters with caps being nonexistent right now

Got one of those. Works pretty well. I use CCI caps and they fit really tight on my nipples.
I really appreciate your honest reviews.
I have one of these love the product and I would recommend it
when you are loading the pistol, your thumb is putting downward pressure on the cap release knob. i could be wrong, but thats what it looks like to me. I have one and once I moved my thumb back, it worked wonderfully.

I tried it with pressure and without pressure...same deal. I tried holding it every way except by my toes. Based on comments here, in emails and Facebook, it looks like some work great like yours, and some work just like mine. I’m beginning to think the manufacturing tolerances at the cap delivery end are critical. Probably 1,000th too tight, and the cap won’t release easily, and pulls off the nipple, staying gripped by the capper.
@figelski1

perhaps its your nipples and the size of the cap? i have not had to push on caps to make sure they are seated. also, cops should not fall of after seating from gun recoil. could be an indication of either the wrong sized cap for the nipple. my recommendation, try it on another gun with factory or something similar just to further the hypothesis. there is a whole large group of us on the blackpowder colt forum rootin for ya, as we all have these and are in Love with them. would love to help ya figure it out.

For those having trouble finding caps. My dad taught me how to knock out the center of a used shotgun primer, then punch the dimple out. Then wet a mixture of percussion powder and using a cut 16p spike, press the powder into the cap. Then place your caps on a windowsill to dry. After a complete drying period they fit the nipples very well, and seem to work better than the store bought. Oh, we made our own powders also. My Father taught me the old ways.
I love my Polish Capper and have had no issues with it. I use in my Uberti Colts and Remington.
Great videos...enjoy your information on cap and ball revolvers..stay safe and have a great day.
Great content as always

[EDIT: The Polish Cappers guy posted here today revealing a recent production issue with rough plastic affecting the dispensing of the cap, and how to fix it. Good job, Polish Cappers! And my faith is restored in Mike, too, since it is now evident that it wasn't just him... but it is still worth checking out the Polish Cappers instruction video!] Perhaps the "disappointing" verdict is a little bit premature when the maker, Polish Cappers, demonstrates in his own video how to use (the mentioned "secret handshake") the capper with a mix of caps on four different pistols, ostensibly without any issues, although he doesn't range test any of them in his video. The Swedish capper looks like a solid version of the old plastic Thompson Center seven spoke capper, which is very easy to use, but, still, this video looks like a demonstration of a first time user (with only a single sample gun) on a learning curve. Looking forward to a time tested update video on the Polish capper which, incidentally, works just fine for me.

Mine is over 3 years old, and have the same issue. The loading rod is 3D printed in plastic, and the surface towards the cap is very rough.
We have to get you up to 100k subscribers Mike. Your stuff is too good.
Great review...thanks Mike..👍
Mr.Beliveau you have old model "Polish caper". New model "Gold caper" working very good.
I use a teardrop capper made by CVA I picked up from Ebay for less than $18.00. It works for the cap guns I use...thanks for the honest review on this product. Honest reviews are rare indeed.
Thank you for the video. Watching you struggle with that capper I began thinking that I have better luck putting caps on with my 69 year old fingers in the cold than you were having. I am now saving up to have a flintlock rifle built, so I have no cash available for a capper, especially one that does not work well.

Thanks for the informational video Looks I will much better off with my Ted Cash capper. Holds 100 caps and works quite reliably. I have a colt Walker and did no modifications Works fine on my percussion rifles too
Think I'll stay with my TC capper, but thank you for the video anyway Mike.
The maker has a KZread video on how to use it, although the fellow doesn’t actually load a revolver with it. It appears you need to slightly pull back on the plunger to release the cap. Edit: Never mind. I found another video of the maker actually loading a Remington. He doesn’t mention anything about having to pulling back on the plunger.
Thanks you saved me some money
Hi Mike. Great video. From what I understand by watching polish videos, me being czech. This particular capper is made to fit standard Remington New Army nipples, that might be the reason why it gave you some grief. Just a guess based on my personal observation, I might be wrong. Seems to work well otherwise.
I use fish aquarium air hose for a capping tool. I cut 1" long pieces and put a cap in each end of the hose. It's quick, cheap and easy and they fit in the ammo case with the preloaded paper cartridges I make.
It is matter of how to used to use it. Basically you will get more practice and you will be happy. At 2 hours at range I do at last 150 shoots. 2x 75 each colt. No issues. But you may have own opinion.
Thank you Mike for a real "show all the warts" demonstration. I am sure the Polish capper people will not be pleased. I will stick with my Tedd Cash snail capper it works.
I had the same problem with my Polish Capper. It's a shame. Very well made, and fits Remington revolvers. But like you, I struggle to get the caps to come out of the capper and seat well. I was using Remington #10s.
After using the Polish Capper for the first time this evening, it does take some coordination to get it right. It really does depend on the movements. From getting one cap in the channel for movement to the dispenser nose of the Polish Capper to placing the cap on the nipple/cone, then pulling back on the knob/trigger on the Polish Capper to take the spring pressure off of the cap so it will drop onto the nipple/cone and stay there. With practice, it'll be second nature I expect. I was using a tin of caps that were mixed brands and sizes (10's & 11's), so some didn't really fit well and would benefit from a slight pinch to stay on, but that was not related to the Polish Capper getting them on the nipples. The capper did it's job well, provided I did my part correctly.
If you place your thumb against the button, while removing the capper from the nipple, there is enough pressure to retain the cap in place on the capper.

Exactly what the Polish guy said in his how to video at Polish Capper.
Great honest review, in the beginning when first seeing the Polish Capper, I had a feeling it was not going to work well due to its design, I purchased a Ted Cash Capper a couple months ago and though I have not got to use it yet, I think it will work well as I seen it on your other video's, I may even get to find out one day should caps ever become available again which at present, does not look very promising, I did purchase a cap maker for just in case, hopefully I will have it by the end of the month. Again... Great Review!
Doing it wrong. Gotta tilt up while lifting it off. Works flawlessly and fast. Love mine. Like anything else, a little practice.
Well I saw enough to know my Ted Cash capper has no fear of being replaced by that thing.
I have only colts. Army 1860. Polish capper is made in two options. One which fits colts or remis. I choosed universal which works with remis and my lovly colts. So.... rws or s&b caps. Shaking is a crazy process. Just use tool and flip them. I used this with rain and sun. Full charged by caps. No issues.
Hi from Syracuse NY
Thanks for a review that was both thorough and honest.
Hey Mike. I bought a straightline capper awhile back that fits my Remington. I either got it from amazon or sportsmans warehouse. Its basically just tapered on the end and works great on the Remington. I'm sure you know of such a capper already, but if you haven't just wanted to mention it. I'll try and find out who makes it if your interested.
Mike, with a little JB Weld, use sparingly, you can transfer that spout from one can to another, indefinitely...or used something just as effectively but not as "grippy" as JB Weld, perhaps from a hobby shop...perhaps something that can easily be removed by something like a hair dryer.
Hello Mike. Im glad you try these things. If you cant run them I know I won't be able to. I picked up two inline traditions Capers that work well on my 1851 navy with slick shot nipples. Been using CCI #11 that is what fits. Got CCI #10's dut thay wont fit the slick shots. Can not find remington's. I relied heavily on your Channel for setting up my pieta thank you as always. Joe security Oklahoma
My Swedish capers arrived yesterday. It took over a month and I can't wait to try them at the range. Maybe a business opportunity for a stateside distributor?
CCI #10 caps fit alot better than the Remington #10. And as luck would have it I have more of the Remington caps than CCI. Thanks for the video Sir.
I'd imagine after the first couple of firings on each chamber the fouling on the nipple surface will help improve the friction hold of the cap to the nipple. That might allow the cap to stay in place when pulling the capper directly away. But, I find that if I don't squeeze the cap into a decent oval shape before pressing the cap firmly onto the nipple, the caps are just going to fall off under the recoil of the heavier loads I shoot.
Very nice looking gun. Thanks for sharing!
Always a thumb op for you Mike

Update, I recently got to actually try one at the range a guy was trying to sell me for $20.00. It did the very same thing the capper Mike had did with both CCI and Remington caps. I declined to buy. it.
Mike, you should also consider testing the Gold Capper, it's also made in Poland. It's simmilar design but you pull the capper to the side, which I like more. It fits remington cylinders as well.

I actually use a snail shape capper by Ted Cash from Track of the Wolf for about 25 bucks, it meets my needs well. Use it with my Ruger old Army, .45 caliber rifle and .45 caliber pistol.
Mike, I only shoot Remington's New Model Army and like we all know the cylinder nipple area on the Remington is very tight, to tight for most cappers. I use a straight capper I bought at Cabelas which was sold at that time under the Traditions brand name. It looks like a Ted Cash straight brass capper but has a different narrower tip design and uses a different spring design. That capper works like a champ it goes on without problems is long enough that you can properly seat the cap with force and then pull it out to the side. In the beginning I used a dowel like you to ensure the cap is seated tight enough not needed with this capper. I can get 18 #10 Remington caps in it for 3 cylinders. I believe I saw that type on Amazon as well it is made out of solid brass is small and handy. On a side note which caps do you prefer the Remington #10 or the RWS 1075?
Is it considered safe practice to cap a loaded gun that's pointing at a can of powder?

Sorry, I don't have a secret source. I used to buy caps 10,000 at time, so, when they got tight I had a good supply on hand. Now I buy them when I see them. I picked up 1,400 caps last year, just by keeping my eyes open, and buying them when ever I see some.

Good look capper. It's a shame it didn't work out. Guess I will just stick with my old snail capper
Have to say Mike, being a personal friend to Anders Gustavsson (that Swedish capper holding 7 you just covered) i have to say i own a Polish capper too. I´ve used mine extensively for the last couple of yrs and albeit it does F up on occasion i still believe credit where credit´s due and to ME that Polish capper has worked, for the most part, very very well. My main issue with it is that it often double feeds. Ie; as i put a cap on there´s a fresh one straight behind it and this cap often comes out by itself and of course thus gets lost. But. On a general whole a few caps here n there ain´t the world - to me at least. I use RWS 1075 exclusively, might be worth mentioning too. That said. Anders plastic capper work better, out of the aspect of reliability. This much also holds true why i often come to replace the Polish these days.
*CORRECTION. I made a mistake, you have to pull back and release the spring when placing the cap. So that the spring doesn’t keep pressure on the cap. Just learnt that.
Mike, what magazine will your flintlock smoothbore article be published in?
Strange, in the makers video he does it fast and simple every time. Its not so clear in the vid but it appears that instead of seating the cap and pulling straight back, he pulls out with a turn, like the way a bottle cap opener works in its motion. Pull while turning. I dont have one to try, sadly. He also makes others now, one in plastic and the "star capper" which is dirt cheap and even easier.
Gees I was thinking about ordering one but now seeing this I will pass. Thanks Mike
Would like to know where to get those Swiss star cappers, that's the ticket right there.

For you Lemat shooters out there. I recently discovered that there is a conical bullet specifically for the Lemat revolver. I am on my phone so can't post a link but just type in Lemat 44 conicals and you should be able to find them. Supposedly they are very accurate bullets.
The capper is camera shy! All show and no go😁
Your long subscriber l've found it strange that the Polish Capper you acquired has somewhat disappointed you, as it works perfectly on all of my black powder revolvers in Poland. Need to learn how to handle it. Guess it's just different from what you had before.
Were do u get the Swedish capper.? Thanks
2 questions. 1. I thought you used .375 balls, why did you switch to .380? 2. Can you recommend some kind of belt pouch that can carry paper cartridges for C&B revolver?
If you tilt the capper slightly when placing it on the nipple, it might stretch the cap causing it to be loose on the nipple. Try to make an effort to place the cap on the nipple without tilting the capper. Probably easier said than done.
will the book book available for kindle?
I have a spring loaded inline capper that holds a dozen or so caps. I keep it in my bag. I don't know the maker

Hey Mike, that Polish Capper looks beautiful and well made. It's a shame it was not working well for you. Do you think it is designed for the different angle of design of European Cones? At one point I thought your keeping your thumb on the knob was holding the cap in the holder. But then I saw you trying to apply the cap when your finger was away from the knob.

I tried holding that capper every way except by my toes. I think maybe the manufacturing tolerances are critical for releasing the cap. With this capper it is all based on friction, so maybe it is just a hair too tight.
It is evident from the video that for this capper to operate properly, the cap in use must fit with X amount of tightness on the nipple. Otherwise, not much use.
a little deburring or easing of angels or the shaper edges? but overall unimpressive? But thanks for the Honest review! Just ordered me the star style! looks just easy, reliable, and simple.
