@@zimmtex absolutely. I subscribed after I watched it. It's starting to get cold here in Minnesota so I'll have plenty of time to practice over the winter. I made a couple spearing decoys with my grandpa when I was little. It's not quite the same process but this video shows everything I'd have to do for those as well.

This is even more detailed, and comprehensive than most of your videos, and that's saying a lot, because you're ALWAYS thorough. Thank you! I"m still not clear on why four two-screweye hinges at each joint is a better arrangement than two pinned screweye hinges. I've used both designs and prefer the reduction in hardware of the latter. Like you, I learned to make jointed swimbaits primarily from Nate (Marling), but I don't understand why the intial, partial sawcuts at each joint should be made with handsaw and angled guide of scrap wood. Before I do ANY shaping of my rectangular wooden (or PVC foam) lure blank, I make these partial cuts on my bandsaw, with the miter gauge (borrowed from my table saw) set at 45 degrees. In about one minute, all six cuts are done and virtually perfect, thanks to the still-square edges of the lure blank. I asked Nate about this, but of course he doesn't respond to viewer comments . . . Any thoughts?

Thanks Chris for watching! I personally prefer two screweye hinges because I find them easier, but I don't know that they are any better than pinned joints. It's possible to make a pinned joint that is removable (not so much with two screweye hinges). Your partial cut method makes sense; especially if you are making a larger batch of lures. For me, I use a hand saw because I enjoy doing some parts by hand. One of the great things about talking with fellow luresmiths like yourself is that it makes me take a closer look at my process and I often find new methods and products. As they say, there's more than one way to skin this cat!

A true artisan. I think your baits will be collectibles in the years to come.

Stunning piece of practical art there freind. Beautifully vibrant colours and excellently balanced. Little bit of advice, if you don't mind, from a sculptor who's been casting resins for years. Don't worry about compensating for your fin's geometry when molding with soft silicone. Mold them as is with a slight reservoir for the top and squeeze from the bottom when resin filled. It evacuates all bubbles and the reservoir will allow the resin to refill with the extra it holds. I make mine for Irish lakes and rivers, and always appreciate a connoisseur.

For the eyes, I've found the easiest way to get them perfect is to drill straight through the head using a small pilot bit and drill press after cutting out the side view, and before the top view. This also gives another reference point to make sure your carving is symmetrical. When ready for the eyes, I use a normal drill bit with the drill in reverse so the bit doesn't dig in or chip, but will still bore a socket easily and slowly. A forstener might even chip white cedar. Obviously nothing wrong with your method but maybe you'll find it useful

I typically use the same size wire for all of the hardware on a lure. If I'm making a lure for bigger fish I use bigger wire. I personally like the double screw eye joint a lot more because it's easier and faster. Also, recessing one end like I did on this build reduces the gap between pieces and looks better. Just a quick question… do you design lures for catching fish or just to look amazing?! The craftsmanship is excellent. I don’t use swim baits a lot and hear they kinda hard to use. What are you going for with these?? I’m from southern Michigan not sure anything would bite these big swim baits.

Well I really I try to make lures that look good and catch fish. My aim is to get a realistic action and color scheme hopefully pleasing to both fish and fishermen. These swimbaits are actually easy and fun to use; maybe you've been hearing about glidebaits? Those require technique to make them swim best, but I think they're fun. I'm amazed at how big of a lure a fish will try to eat. I recently caught a small bass on this lure that wasn't much bigger than the bait!

I do catch fish with them, but doing it on camera has proven difficult. Check out my video 'Fishing with Handmade Lures'. Unfortunately I have to travel quite a ways to the nearest fishing hole and between work and family obligations, I just can't dedicate much time to filming fishing. I do try to post some of my catches on instagram. I will say that I have a couple of trips planned this summer where I will have plenty of time to fish and hopefully will be able to get some great footage. Stay tuned!

Why don’t you sell your lures? I’d buy one of these bass swim baits in a minute.

make my own lures to my grandpas make lure too i was very young remembering walking to the hardware store with him for a few brooms handles for the plugs he made yes get a ice cream too back in the 60s my first rod and reel came from the store too Daiwa stamp on the handle of the rod and the is a Daiwa to the store have been close for 50 years now came across a yard sale gone to school with who have the yard sale they said their geat grandparent owned the hardware store and they are selling off the rest of the thing lift old knives and the old fishing thing they said look at it and ask them what you want for all of it got it all for 100 dollars 40 ventage reels still in the box 100 ventage rods too 40 robber case of another thing to 4 wooden boxes were in the deal to do not know what inside Daiwa rods and reels 20 in each box did sell the lures off I was and still not into that lures maybe they were made cheapy and they rust your box out
